The mitigation of CO2 emissions requires a global effort with common but differentiated responsibilities. In this paper, we identify clusters of CO2 emissions across 72 countries. First, using the stochastic version of the IPAT and employing the dynamic common correlated effects technique, we identify three key determinants affecting CO2 emissions (non-renewables, population, and real GDP). In the second step, both hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering methods are considered to identify the optimal number of clusters. We identify two to four clusters with different member countries, and in particular establish that in most cases, a 2-cluster solution appears to be optimal. The contents of clusters vary slightly according to the clustering methods for each period. The clustering results from using only the overall CO2 emissions indicate that the countries we consider form three clusters, with China and the USA each within a single member cluster. The remaining 70 countries form the third cluster. Our findings reflect the prominent roles of China and the USA in overall CO2 emissions. Analyses with sub-period and largest emitters reflect a different clustering structure. Some policy recommendations in setting emission reductions are made, considering different clusters across countries. 相似文献

The littoral zone of temperate rocky shores is normally dominated by perennial macroalgae (e.g. Fucus, Ascophyllum, Laminaria), but nutrient enrichment and/or permanently decreased wave action may lead to structural community changes from dominance
of perennials to increased amounts of annual opportunistic species (mainly green algae). Macroalgal biomass, diversity and
production as well as relationships between the two latter were studied using Solbergstrand’s rocky shore mesocosms in SE
Norway in connection with a long-term experimental manipulation of nutrient addition and wave action (high and low levels
of both factors applied in a crossed way to eight outdoor basins). After more than 2 years of experimental treatment, the
total standing stock of macroalgae was larger in low nutrient than in high nutrient treatments as well as in high wave compared
to low wave treatments (in autumn only). For macroalgal functional groups, bushy and filamentous brown and filamentous red
algae were generally favoured by low nutrient concentrations, while annual filamentous and sheet-like green algae were stimulated
by the nutrient enrichment. There was only one significant interaction between nutrient enrichment and wave action (for brown
filamentous algae in autumn) and also only one significant main effect of the wave treatment (for bushy brown algae in autumn).
Surprisingly, the high nutrient treatments supported a higher diversity of macroalgae, whereas the low nutrient treatments
generally showed higher production rates. Moreover, significantly negative correlations were found between macroalgal diversity
and primary productivity in both summer and autumn. This study shows that it is the biological components of the communities
subjected to external forcing (nutrient addition or decreased wave action) that regulate production and this contradicts the
common misperception that resource production in natural systems simply can be fast-forwarded by fertilization. The negative
relationships between diversity and productivity, although a consequence of unexpected results for diversity and production,
are also novel and hint towards species identities having more important functional consequences than general species dominance
patterns and the amount of species per se. These results also emphasise the context dependency of findings within the field

The rapid divergence of male genitalia is a widely observed evolutionary phenomenon. Although sexual selection is currently
regarded as providing the most likely driving force behind genital diversification, the mechanisms responsible are still debated.
Here, we investigate the relationship between male genital morphology and sperm transfer in the praying mantid Ciulfina klassi using geometric morphometrics. The shape of male genitalia in C. klassi influenced sperm transfer duration and the number and proportion of sperm transferred, suggesting that genital morphology
is under sexual selection in this species. Genital size however was not correlated with any aspect of sperm transfer. Intriguingly,
two of the major genital shape components correlated positively with the number of sperm transferred, but negatively with
sperm transfer duration. Hence, males that most effectively transfer sperm to the female spermatheca do so in a relatively
short period of time. A direct negative relationship was also found between sperm transfer duration and sperm transfer success.
Overall, our study suggests that the variable genital shape of Ciulfina may have been selected for more efficient sperm transfer. 相似文献

Sexual cannibalism can occur before, during or after mating. Relatively few experimental studies have examined why there is variation in the timing of sexual cannibalism. We examined the latency and number of attacks required for female spiders to capture male spiders pre- vs. postcopulation. We also examined the effects of female mating status and hunger level on the occurrence of pre- and postcopulatory cannibalism, which reflects the contribution of both relative capture success and female motivation to cannibalize males. Precopulatory cannibalism occurred after a shorter interval and required fewer chases and physical interactions for the female to successfully capture the male than was the case for postcopulatory cannibalism. Virgin females were more likely to engage in postcopulatory rather than precopulatory cannibalism and mated females vice versa. Those virgin females that did engage in precopulatory cannibalism had significantly lower body condition than virgin females engaging in postcopulatory cannibalism. While precopulatory cannibalism occurred more quickly and required fewer attacks by females, it comes at a potential cost of not mating with males. Hence, females are more likely to engage in precopulatory cannibalism if they have already mated or, if virgins, if they have low body condition. These results indicate that the decision of when to cannibalize males is dynamic and depends upon the relative value of a male as a mate versus a meal. 相似文献

Land capability classification systems define and communicate biophysical limitations on land use, including climate, soils
and topography. They can therefore provide an accessible format for both scientists and decision-makers to share knowledge
on climate change impacts and adaptation. Underlying such classifications are complex interactions that require dynamic spatial
analysis, particularly between soil and climate. These relationships are investigated using a case study on drought risk for
agriculture in Scotland, which is currently considered less significant than wetness-related issues. The impact of drought
risk is assessed using an established empirical system for land capability linking indicator crops with water availability.
This procedure is facilitated by spatial interpolation of climate and soil profile data to provide soil moisture deficits
and plant available water on a regular 1-km grid. To evaluate potential impacts of future climate change, land capability
classes are estimated using both large-scale ensemble (multi-simulation) data from the HadRM3 regional climate model and local-scale
weather generator data (UKCP09) derived from multiple climate models. Results for the case study suggest that drought risk
is likely to have a much more significant influence on land use in the future. This could potentially act to restrict the
range of crops grown and hence reduce land capability in some areas unless strategic-level adaptation measures are developed
that also integrate land use systems and water resources with the wider environment. 相似文献

Contamination of natural aquatic ecosystems by hospital wastewater is a major environmental and human health issue. Disinfectants, pharmaceuticals, radionuclides and solvents are widely used in hospitals for medical purposes and research. After application, some of these substances combine with hospital effluents and, in industrialised countries, reach the municipal sewer network. In certain developing countries, hospitals usually discharge their wastewater into septic tanks equipped with diffusion wells. The discharge of chemical compounds from hospital activities into the natural environment can lead to the pollution of water resources and risks for human health. The aim of this article is to present: (i) the steps of a procedure intended to evaluate risks to human health linked to hospital effluents discharged into a septic tank equipped with a diffusion well; and (ii) the results of its application on the effluents of a hospital in Port-au-Prince. The procedure is based on a scenario that describes the discharge of hospital effluents, via septic tanks, into a karstic formation where water resources are used for human consumption. COD, Chloroform, dichlomethane, dibromochloromethane, dichlorobromomethane and bromoform contents were measured. Furthermore, the presence of heavy metals (chrome, nickel and lead) and faecal coliforms were studied. Maximum concentrations were 700 NPP/100 ml for faecal coliforms and 112 mg/L for COD. A risk of infection of 10? 5 infection per year was calculated. Major chemical risks, particularly for children, relating to Pb(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI) and Ni(II) contained in the ground water were also characterised. Certain aspects of the scenario studied require improvement, especially those relating to the characterisation of drugs in groundwater and the detection of other microbiological indicators such as protozoa, enterococcus and viruses. 相似文献

Community involvement has been identified as an important factor in the successful redevelopment of contaminated land, and access to technical resources has been a barrier for some communities. This paper describes how the US Environmental Protection Agency funded Technical Outreach Services to Communities programme was used to support four communities involved in land revitalization. The four New England case studies were used to retrospectively draw lessons learned that could be useful to others interested in similar community work. We suggest that the broad lessons point to four factors for success, namely, where there is: (1) a common vision in the community; (2) a cohesive community; (3) an opportunity for co-learning; and (4) a commitment among the parties for long-term engagement. We conclude that technical support can serve as a useful framework for developing trustful and long-term relationships with communities. 相似文献

To evaluate the relative effect of autecologic factors, site-specific factors, disturbance characteristics, and community
structure on the recovery of temperate-stream fish communities, we reviewed case histories for 49 sites and recorded data
on 411 recovery end points. Most data were derived from studies of low-gradient third- or fourth-order temperate streams located
in forested or agricultural watersheds. Species composition, species richness, and total density all recovered within one
year for over 70% of systems studied. Lotic fish communities were not resilient to press disturbances (e.g., mining, logging,
channelization) in the absence of mitigation efforts (recovery time >5 to >52 yr) and in these cases recovery was limited
by habitat quality. Following pulse disturbances, autecological factors, site-specific factors, and disturbance-specific factors
all affected rates of recovery. Centrarchids and minnows were most resilient to disturbance, while salmonid populations were
least resilient of all families considered. Species within rock-substrate/nest-spawning guilds required significantly longer
time periods to either recolonize or reestablish predisturbance population densities than did species within other reproductive
guilds. Recovery was enhanced by the presence of refugia but was delayed by barriers to migration, especially when source
populations for recolonization were relatively distant. Median population recovery times for systems in which disturbances
occurred during or immediately prior to spawning were significantly less than median recovery times for systems in which disturbances
occurred immediately after spawning. There was little evidence for the influence of biotic interactions on recovery rates. 相似文献

Mining of Cu took place in Kvalsund in the Arctic part of Norway in the 1970s, and mine tailings were discharged to the inner part of the fjord, Repparfjorden. Metal speciation analysis was used to assess the historical dispersion of metals as well as their potential bioavailability from the area of the mine tailing disposal. It was revealed that the dispersion of Ba, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn from the mine tailings has been limited. Dispersion of Cu to the outer fjord has, however, occurred; the amounts released and dispersed from the mine tailing disposal area quantified to be 2.5–10 t, less than 5% of Cu in the original mine tailings. An estimated 80–390 t of Cu still remains in the disposal area from the surface to a depth of 16 cm. Metal partitioning showed that 56–95% of the Cu is bound in the potential bioavailable fractions (exchangeable, reducible and oxidisable) of the sediments, totalling approximately 70–340 t, with potential for continuous release to the pore water and re-precipitation in over- and underlying sediments. Surface sediments in the deposit area were affected by elevated Cu concentrations just above the probable effect level according to the Norwegian sediment quality criteria, with 50–80% Cu bound in the exchangeable, reducible and oxidisable fractions, potentially available for release to the water column and/or for uptake in benthic organisms. 相似文献

Changes in global patterns of grain production have affected the profitability of commercial, cash-crop agriculture in North America. The current financial crisis has highlighted a perceived conflict between the priorities of (1) strengthening net farm profit, (2) maintaining the productive potential of the land base, (3) enhancing the health and cohesiveness of the agricultural community, and (4) addressing societal demands for safe foodstuffs. Reducing input costs by reducing the need for privately owned machinery can minimize the scale-dependence of agricultural practices, as illustrated with examples involving silage and intensively managed pasture in Ontario. This approach could improve farming opportunities for nontraditional, part-time farmers, and at the same time, create a niche for professional custom operators and managers. Enhancing the viability of nontraditional farm operations, a historically neglected component of the farming community, as well as commercial farms is viewed as one approach to sustaining and improving both the agricultural land base and the agricultural community. Applying resource-extensive rather than resource-intensive approaches to forage management reveals that these apparently divergent priorities are, in fact, interlocking pieces of the same puzzle. 相似文献
