The effects of long-term exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on developmental dental defects of deciduous and permanent teeth in children in eastern Slovakia, where PCBs from a chemical plant manufacturing Delors contaminated the surrounding district were evaluated. Four hundred and thirtytwo children, lifelong residents, aged 8-9 years were examined. Children's caries susceptibility and gingival health was assessed by standard dental indices, and developmental enamel defects by the FDI index. Data from the PCBRISK project data set and questionnaires completed by the parents provided information on exposure and various confounding factors. The proportion of teeth with different types and extensions of developmental enamel defects correlated with serum PCB concentration. The proportion of deciduous teeth affected with enamel defects was significantly higher in higher exposed children (chi(2)=8.35; p=0.03) according to their serum PCB concentration (group 0: <200; group 1: 200-600; group 2: >600 ng PCBs g(-1) serum lipids). The proportion of permanent teeth affected with any enamel defect was significantly higher in higher exposed children (chi2=7.237; p=0.027). Furthermore, the extent of the enamel defects was also greater (chi2=10.714; p=0.005). In multivariate linear regression analysis PCB exposure was significantly related to developmental enamel defects of permanent teeth only. No associations between PCB exposure and caries susceptibility, gingival health or number of teeth were observed. This study demonstrated a dose-response relationship between PCB exposure and developmental enamel defects of permanent teeth in children, the evidence for deciduous teeth was not conclusive. 相似文献

The concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) in 33 breast milk samples collected in 2006-2007 from primipara mothers close to four industrial areas of Slovak Republic were determined. The total PCDDs/PCDFs and dl-PCBs expressed as TEQ based on WHO TEFs 1998 in breast milk samples varied from 5.0 to 51.8 pg g−1 fat (median: 13.1 pg g−1 fat; mean: 18.0 pg g−1 fat). The measurements of seven PBDE congeners (IUPAC No. 28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, and 183) were performed for the first time in human milk from Slovakia. PBDE levels ranged between 0.22 and 1.62 ng g−1 fat, with median and mean value of 0.43 ng g−1 fat and 0.57 ng g−1 fat respectively. No statistically significant differences were observed between studied areas in total PBDE concentrations.Furthermore, this study presents first results concerning the daily intake (DI) of PCDDs/PCDFs and dioxin-like compounds for the most vulnerable breast-fed infant population in Slovakia. The total PCDD/PCDF and dl-PCB DI for an infant during the first 2 months of life was estimated in a range from 14.4 to 230 pg TEQ kg−1 b.w., with a median value of 58.9 pg TEQ kg−1 b.w.. The DI values substantially exceeded the tolerable daily intake (TDI) 1-4 pg TEQ kg−1 b.w. recommended by WHO. The aim of the present study was to understand the placental transfer of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), specific hydroxylated PCB metabolites (OH-PCBs), and pentachlorophenol (PCP) in blood serum, in a birth cohort from eastern Slovakia. During the period 2002-2004, cord blood specimens were collected in parallel with maternal specimens from women delivering in the two eastern Slovak districts of Michalovce and Svidnik/Stropkov. A total of 92 pairs of mother-cord specimens at delivery were selected for this study. 4-OH-CB107, 3-OH-CB153, 4-OH-CB146, 3'-OH-CB138, 4-OH-CB187, and 4'-OH-CB172 were quantified. The median concentrations of Sigma(17)PCBs, Sigma(6)OH-PCBs, and PCP in cord serum were 0.92, 0.33, and 0.69 ng/g wet wt., respectively and highly correlated with the corresponding maternal serum levels (correlations were R(2)=0.61, 0.78, and 0.82, respectively). The median cord to mother ratios of the Sigma(17)PCBs, Sigma(6)OH-PCBs, and PCP were 0.18, 0.75, and 1.10, respectively. The median ratio of the Sigma(6)OH-PCBs to the Sigma(17) PCBs in the cord serum was 0.38 from wet weight based concentrations, which was about four times higher than the ratio of these compounds in maternal serum (0.09). PCP was more abundant than any PCB or OH-PCB congener measured in cord serum. The higher cord to maternal ratios of OH-PCB metabolites as compared with the parent compounds suggests either a higher placental transfer rate or greater metabolism in the fetus as compared with the maternal compartment. These findings are consistent with their preferential binding to TTR that can cross the placenta. This study develops a quantitative approach to the establishment of a maximum allowable thermal discharge into a freshwater body (the Beloyarsk Reservoir) incorporated in the once-through cooling technology at the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant (NPP) (South Urals, Russian Federation). The study is based on a 3-D hydrodynamic model, embracing water circulation, heat transfer, and ice-cover formation in the Beloyarsk Reservoir. The model is driven by atmospheric forcing, river runoff, and the discharge/intake of NPP cooling water. It was used to simulate the horizontal and vertical distribution of water temperature under the effect of the operation of existing (number 3) and anticipated (numbers 4 and 5) nuclear power units. The model is validated by the comparison of the computation results with observed water temperature distribution and ice-cover configuration obtained with remote sensing techniques. The model was also used to predict the future evolution of water temperature after the launching of two new power units, which, having a common cooling system, may affect each other. It was shown that the first of the new units, no. 4, will not dramatically affect the existing thermal conditions in the reservoir, while launching one more unit, no. 5, will apparently result in overheating of the reservoir water in response to the greater volume of cooling-water discharge from the two power units. Because of a specific configuration of the recirculation flow, the reservoir may fail to cope with the dissipation of the generated heat, leading to a steady (uncontrolled) rise of water temperature in the inlet channel to one of the power units. This will reduce the potential of NPP, using the once-through cooling technology, and will most likely have an adverse effect on the survival of aquatic organisms in the Beloyarsk Reservoir. The external (environmental and social) costs of landfilling (e.g. emissions to air, soil and water; and 'disamenities' such as odours and pests) are difficult to quantify in monetary terms, and are therefore not generally reflected in waste disposal charges or taken into account in decision making regarding waste management options. This results in a bias against alternatives such as recycling, which may be more expensive than landfilling from a purely financial perspective, but preferable from an environmental and social perspective. There is therefore a need to quantify external costs in monetary terms, so that different disposal options can be compared on the basis of their overall costs to society (financial plus external costs). This study attempts to estimate the external costs of landfilling in the City of Cape Town for different scenarios, using the benefits transfer method (for emissions) and the hedonic pricing method (for disamenities). Both methods (in particular the process of transferring and adjusting estimates from one study site to another) are described in detail, allowing the procedures to be replicated elsewhere. The results show that external costs are currently R111 (in South African Rands, or approximately US$16) per tonne of waste, although these could decline under a scenario in which energy is recovered, or in which the existing urban landfills are replaced with a new regional landfill. 相似文献

Background, aim, and scope
Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) is a relatively new energetic compound sharing some degree of structural similarity with hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), a known neurotoxic compound. Previously, we demonstrated using a noninvasive electrophysiological technique that CL-20 was a more potent neurotoxicant than RDX to the earthworm Eisenia fetida. In the present study, we investigated the effect of CL-20 exposure and subsequent recovery on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) to further define the mechanism of reversible neurotoxicity of CL-20 in E. fetida.Materials and methods
We used a noninvasive electrophysiological technique to evaluate neurotoxicity in CL-20-treated worms, and then measured how such exposures altered levels of whole-body mAChR in the same animals.Results and discussion
A good correlation exists between these two types of endpoints. Effect on mAChR levels was most prominent at day 6 of exposure. After 7 days of recovery, both conduction velocity and mAChR were significantly restored. Our results show that sublethal concentrations of CL-20 significantly reduced mAChR levels in a concentration- and duration-dependent manner, which was accompanied with significant decreases in the conduction velocity of the medial and lateral giant nerve fibers. After 7-day post exposure recovery, worms restored both neurochemical (mAChR) and neurophysiological (conduction velocity) endpoints that were reduced during 6-day exposures to CL-20 concentrations from 0.02 to 0.22 µg/cm2.Conclusions and perspectives
Our findings support the idea that CL-20 induced neurotoxic effects are reversible, and suggest that CL-20 neurotoxicity may be mediated through the cholinergic system. Future studies will investigate other neurotransmission systems such as GABA, glutamate, and monoamine. In a certain area of Michalovce district in East Slovakia, heavy industrial pollution by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) developed in 1955-1984 and very high PCB levels in environmental and human samples are still persisting. Recently, a total of 2045 adults from this and the surrounding background pollution area have been examined using questionnaire data, thyroid volume by ultrasound (ThV), urinary iodine and serum levels of 15 PCB congeners, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), 2,2'-2-bis(4-chlorobiphenyl)-1,1-dichloroethylene (DDE), 2,2'-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane (DDT), alpha-, beta- and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies (TPOab) and fasting glucose. As based on our previous findings of strikingly high level of PCBs in fish from high pollution area (e.g. mean level of 375430 ng/g lipid) and considerably lower, but still relatively high level in background pollution area (e.g. mean PCB level of 5150 ng/g), the information on the frequency of fish meals and approximate annual consumption of fish from local waters was obtained by questionnaires. The association of contaminated fish consumption with very high blood levels of PCBs, DDE and HCB and increased ThV as well as with increased frequency of positive TPOab, high values of FT4 and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) was found. These associations were also confirmed in 16 marital pairs from high pollution area with very high PCB level in both members associated with high fish consumption. It was concluded that, due to persistent heavy pollution of waters, soil and food chain namely by PCBs, but also by pesticides (e.g. DDE and HCB) resulting from their previous extensive use in agriculture, the fish from local waters still remains the most important source of these toxic pollutants which results in considerable adverse health effects. 相似文献

Green cover in vineyards on steep slopes may play an important role in the reduction of soil erosion. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a permanent green cover (PGC) on soil erosion, together with any loss of nutrients, and to compare it with periodic soil tillage (PST). PST took place in the spring (May) and summer (August), in each second area between rows, in a vineyard with permanent green cover. In the case of PST experimental treatments, on average, 1892 kg of soil ha-1 yr-1 eroded, together with the nutrients. In the case of PGC treatments, the amountof soil erosion was only 92 kg ha-1 yr-1. The greater portion of erosive events occurred after tillage in summer, which was accompanied by heavy rainfall and slow renewal of grass cover (slower than in spring). PGC treatment provided a better environment for the activities of soil macro-organisms (i.e., earthworms belonging to the family Lumbricidae), and mostof the organisms were close to the soil surface. In PST treatment, the majority of macro-organisms were below the area disturbed by the tillage (between 10 and 20 cm). The results of our investigation indicate that, in order to adjust wine production activities to climatic changes in vineyards with permanent green cover, PST in area between rows is more advisable in spring (end of May) than in summer (first decade of August) owing to an earlier establishment of effective grass cover. 相似文献
