The transfer of PCDD/Fs from contaminated textiles to the outermost layers of the skin (stratum corneum) of human volunteers was measured. The experiments were conducted with cotton T-shirts containing high levels of hepta- and octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans. The results indicated that there is little spatial variability in the transfer from the T-shirt to the skin surface (< factor2) and also little variability among individuals (< factor 3). The percent transfer from different cotton textiles (sigma PCDD/F: 1,900 pg/g - 281,000 pg/g) to the stratum corneum was found to be similar. The transfer from a white, unbleached polyester material was more than an order of magnitude lower, indicating that the PCDD/Fs were more tightly bound to the polyester than to the cotton. It was shown that the PCDD/Fs penetrate into deeper layers of the stratum corneum during an 8 hour exposure period. However, systemic exposure and a significant contribution of this pathway to the PCDD/F body burden is only possible if the compounds are able to overcome the penetration barrier posed by the viable epidermis. 相似文献

Meiofauna was sampled using SCUBA along 4 transects from 5 to 30 m depth in Algoa Bay, South Africa. Substrates were well-sorted medium to fine sands with traces of sewage pollution in some areas. Meiofauna numbers recorded in the upper 10 cm of sediment were 55 to 584 10 cm-2, but total numbers, including deeper-living animals, were 680 to 2090 10 cm-2 at 6 stations. Longer cores showed meiofauna to be abundant down to at least 35 cm, and samples of interstitial water taken from this depth in the sediment were 7% saturated with oxygen. This is the first detailed record of meiofauna penetration into sub-littoral sand and stresses the need for long cores for quantitative work. Nematode numbers were found to be significantly related to nitrogen in the sand while interstitial harpacticoid numbers were related to median particle diameters, which determine pore space. Effects of sewage were slight and only one station showed notable enrichment, increased meiofaunal numbers and extreme dominance by nematodes. 相似文献

The accumulation of atmospheric HCB, Lindane, DDT, DDE and the PCB congeners 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180 in spruce needles (Picea abies) was investigated at outdoor locations and in greenhouses supplied with ambient air. The air supply of the greenhouses was
modified to dinstinguish between gaseous and particle-associated deposition of the compounds. Accumulation of the compounds
occurred in all spruce except those grown in the greenhouse where the gaseous concentration of the compounds was reduced.
Spruce grown in the greenhouse supplied with particle-free ambient air behaved similarity to those grown outdoors. Protecting
the spruce located outdoors from rain did not affect the accumulation. The results show that under spring and summer conditions
at a typical central European rural environment dry gaseous deposition is the dominant pathway of these compounds to needles.

Despite intensive efforts over the last century to eradicate bovine tuberculosis (TB) in North America, several hotspots of infected wildlife and livestock remain, raising concerns that the disease will never be eradicated. The stress and frustration for a farmer caused by having a herd test positive for TB or living in an infected region can be substantial. The goal of this study was to investigate the concerns of farmers around Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP) regarding the presence of TB in wildlife and livestock and conduct an exploratory analysis of causal factors. Data were collected from 786 farmers within 50 km of RMNP using a mail-back questionnaire. Overall, farmers indicated a high level of concern toward diseases in both wildlife and cattle relative to other concerns. The spatial variables that had the greatest influence on TB concern were both the distance of farms to the RMNP boundary and distance of farms to previous cases of TB. The most important aspatial factor associated with high TB concern was the frequency with which farmers observed elk on their land. These results underscore the important differences between 'objective' measures of risk, such as epidemiological estimates of disease prevalence, and subjective measures of disease concern, such as risk perception and acceptability of management actions. Written responses suggest that concerns regarding disease may affect how farmers view wildlife on their land and their relationship with neighbouring protected areas. Management activities that reduce the frequency of elk interactions with farms, but also recognize the complex relationship that farmers have with wildlife and protected areas, will be most effective in mitigating farmer concern regarding this important problem. 相似文献

Quantitative knowledge of organic chemical release into the environment is essential to understand and predict human exposure as well as to develop rational control strategies for any substances of concern. While significant efforts have been invested to characterize and screen organic chemicals for hazardous properties, relatively less effort has been directed toward estimating emissions and hence also risks. Here, a rapid throughput method to estimate emissions of discrete organic chemicals in commerce has been developed, applied and evaluated to support screening studies aimed at ranking and identifying chemicals of potential concern. The method builds upon information in the European Union Technical Guidance Document and utilizes information on quantities in commerce (production and/or import rates), chemical function (use patterns) and physical-chemical properties to estimate emissions to air, soil and water within the OECD for five stages of the chemical life-cycle. The method is applied to 16,029 discrete substances (identified by CAS numbers) from five national and international high production volume lists. As access to consistent input data remains fragmented or even impossible, particular attention is given to estimating, evaluating and discussing uncertainties in the resulting emission scenarios. The uncertainty for individual substances typically spans 3 to 4 orders of magnitude for this initial tier screening method. Information on uncertainties in emissions is useful as any screening or categorization methods which solely rely on threshold values are at risk of leading to a significant number of either false positives or false negatives. A limited evaluation of the screening method's estimates for a sub-set of about 100 substances, compared against independent and more detailed emission scenarios presented in various European Risk Assessment Reports, highlights that up-to-date and accurate information on quantities in commerce as well as a detailed breakdown on chemical function are critically needed for developing more realistic emission scenarios. 相似文献

The spring bloom in seasonally stratified seas is often characterized by a rapid increase in photosynthetic biomass. To clarify
how the combined effects of nutrient and light availability influence phytoplankton composition in the oligotrophic Gulf of
Aqaba, Red Sea, phytoplankton growth and acclimation responses to various nutrient and light regimes were recorded in three
independent bioassays and during a naturally-occurring bloom. We show that picoeukaryotes and Synechococcus maintained a “bloomer” growth strategy, which allowed them to grow quickly when nutrient and light limitation were reversed.
During the bloom picoeukaryotes and Synechococcus appeared to have higher P requirements relative to N, and were responsible for the majority of photosynthetic biomass accumulation.
Following stratification events, populations limited by light showed rapid photoacclimation (based on analysis of cellular
fluorescence levels and photosystem II photosynthetic efficiency) and community composition shifts without substantial changes
in photosynthetic biomass. The traditional interpretation of “bloom” dynamics (i.e., as an increase in photosynthetic biomass)
may therefore be confined to the upper euphotic zone where light is not limiting, while other acclimation processes are more
ecologically relevant at depth. Characterizing acclimation processes and growth strategies is important if we are to clarify
mechanisms that underlie productivity in oligotrophic regions, which account for approximately half of the global primary
production in the ocean. This information is also important for predicting how phytoplankton may respond to global warming-induced

Recovery Patterns of Understory Herbs and Their Use as Indicators of Deciduous Forest Regeneration 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract: Habitat fragmentation has reduced the richness of native species of forests in northeastern North America. Despite recent large-scale increases in forest cover, studies indicate that understory herbaceous plant communities may take many decades to recover. We studied recovery patterns of vegetation following up to 35 years of forest regeneration in restored former cottage and road sites at Point Pelée National Park, Ontario, Canada, to assess the vulnerability of the understory herbaceous species. Overall, there were no significant differences in the diversity of native species between restored and relatively undisturbed reference sites. There was, however, significant among-site variation in the composition of the native species component of these plant communities. When only restored sites were examined, variation in native species composition was associated with time since site restoration, soil moisture, canopy cover, and distance to continuous forest. Native species were assigned vulnerability rankings according to their relative occurrence in reference and restored sites. Spring-flowering herbs, with ant- or gravity-dispersed seeds, were absent from restored sites and were defined as highly vulnerable. In contrast, summer- and fall-flowering herbs, with vertebrate- and wind-dispersed seeds, dominated restored sites and were less vulnerable. Species of low and intermediate vulnerability had colonized restored sites successfully, and the latter should function as indicators of recovery. In contrast, species with high vulnerability rankings had not recovered at all and, because of their limited dispersal ranges, may recolonize restored sites only if they are actively reintroduced. 相似文献

The effects of varying intensities of human trampling on sandy beach macrofauna were investigated at an exposed beach on the
Eastern Cape coast. An experimental approach investigated the survival rates of four macrofaunal species which were subjected
to human trampling at different intensities in a holiday-activity simulation. It was found that the clamDonax serra was slightly impacted at all trampling intensities whileDonax sordidus and the isopodEurydice longicomis were affected only at high trampling intensities. The additive flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (deBDethane) has been identified in the environment, but little is known about its environmental behaviour. It is structurally similar to decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE), making it conceivable that it may also become an environmental contaminant of concern. In this study a mass balance of deBDethane and decaBDE was undertaken in a modern WWTP in Stockholm serving 7.05x10(5) inhabitants. Flow proportional samples of plant influent and effluent as well as daily grab samples of digested sludge were collected during two 7-day periods. All samples were analyzed with GC/HRMS using isotope labelled internal standards. The mean mass flows of deBDethane and decaBDE to the WWTP were 6.0 g per day and 55 g per day, respectively. Of this, less than 1% of both BFRs left the WWTP via the effluent, while the bulk was sequestered into the digested sludge, where the mean concentrations of deBDethane and decaBDE were 81 and 800 ng g(-1)d.wt., respectively. A continuous supply of water with defined stable concentrations of hydrophobic chemicals is a requirement in a range of laboratory tests such as the OECD 305 protocol for determining the bioconcentration factor in fish. Satisfying this requirement continues to be a challenge, particularly for hydrophobic chemicals. Here we present a novel solution based on equilibrium passive dosing. It employs a commercially available unit consisting of ∼16 000 polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tubes connected to two manifolds. The chemicals are loaded into the unit by repeatedly perfusing it with a methanol solution of the substances that is progressively diluted with water. Thereafter the unit is perfused with water and the chemicals partition from the unit into the water. The system was tested with nine chemicals with log KOW ranging from 4.1 to 6.3. The aqueous concentrations generated were shown to be largely independent of the water flow rate, and the unit to unit reproducibility was within a factor of ∼2. In continuous flow experiments the aqueous concentrations of most of the study chemicals remained constant over 8 d. A model was assembled that allows prediction of the operating characteristics of the system from the log KOW or PDMS/water partition coefficient of the chemical. The system is a simple, safe, predictable and flexible tool that generates stable aqueous concentrations of hydrophobic chemicals. 相似文献
