CO concentrations were measured in five kindergartens, one children's hospital and two homes for aged, practically without indoor sources, all situated in the city centre, for ten random days in winter and ten in summer. The indoor CO concentrations were the result of the distance from and the traffic density in the nearest street, of general pollution level, seasonal differences, day-to-day variations and daily cycle of air pollution, the vicinity of traffic having a dominant influence. An attempt was made to explain ambient air quality violations in the vicinity of industrial plants. The original Industrial Source Complex Model (ISCST, 90346) and its latest version, the ISCST2 (92090), are evaluated for the 1- and 24-hour averaging periods, using six statistical parameters. The confidence limits on two parameters were obtained using the bootstrap, jacknife, seductive, and robust resampling techniques. Evaluation is conducted in a multiple point source environment and in all the different stability categories, using a year of meteorological data, emission inventory of the Lucas County, in Toledo, Ohio, and monitoring data from two nearby stations for the year 1987. This was representative of a real time situation in which the ISCST is generally applied for regulatory work. The sensitivity analysis shows that the ISC is a poor performing model in the 1-h and 24-h averaging period, neutral and stable categories, and modifications to it are necessary in order to improve its performance. Its performance changes depending on the chosen paired values. A better relative performance is observed in the unstable category relative to the neutral and stable categories. Improved model performance may be achieved by applying modifications to the physics on which the model is based. 相似文献

CaCl2-extractable soil Cd and Zn contents have been suggested as a measure of bioavailability. To investigate the ability of this measure to reflect spatial patterns of Cd and Zn concentrations in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in an arable field, plant and soil samples were taken from a 0.5 ha area sandy soil contaminated with Cd and Zn. Cd and Zn contents in barley and yield were spatially variable. Yield was low, which may have been caused by Zn toxicity or atrazine turnover. For Cd, CaCl2-extractable soil contents explained only 17% of the variation in Cd contents in grain, and for Zn no significant correlation was observed. Nevertheless, surface plots of CaCl2-extractable soil contents and contents of barley grain illustrated their corresponding spatial patterns. Despite the poor linear correlation between CaCl2-extractable soil-Cd and grain-Cd, a stochastic model for long term behaviour of Cd in field soils predicted observed variability in Cd contents of barley grain well from spatial variability of soil pH and organic matter content. The probabilistic model predicted behaviour of Cd in terms of probability, and was more appropriate than the deterministic approach. 相似文献

Static bioassays were carried out using two aquatic snails (Pilia sp. and Lanistes sp.) as test organisms in soft natural dilution water, with waste drilling fluid as the test material, at 28±2°C. Comparison of results for the control and different concentrations of the waste drilling fluid were made by means of the F-statistic method. The design of environmental monitoring programs is frequently hampered by a lack of objective, quantitative criteria for evaluating alternative monitoring variables. In this paper we describe two such criteria, which we call samples required — the number of samples required to detect a given change in value — and information imparted — the amount of environmental information revealed by the monitoring variable. We then use these criteria to evaluate fin erosion in winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) and Dover sole (Microstomus pacificus) as marine environmental monitoring variables. Two methods for determining the samples required use contaminated and reference areas to estimate the sample statistics of a hypothetical impacted population. The first method is based on the overall difference in the proportions of diseased fish in the reference and hypothetical populations. The second treats the proportion of diseased fish in individual trawls as the variate and determines the samples required based on the mean and variance of the reference and contaminated populations. We use both methods to predict the number of trawls needed to detect an increase of 200% in fin erosion in the reference population. The first method had greater statistical power but assumes spatially homogeneous populations. The second method accounts for environmental patchiness. For Dover sole it predicted 1661 trawls would be needed to detect the 200% increase. An estuarine winter flounder population would require 74 trawls, and an oceanic winter flounder population would require 142.5 trawls. It appears that fin erosion in winter flounder may be a useful indicator of environmental contamination, but several stipulations apply. Migration may inflate the number of diseased fish observed in the reference population, and a more detailed etiology of the disease is required, including an understanding of what contaminants are responsible for manifestation of the disease. 相似文献

Prices for ferro-alloys have hardened due to the closure of plants in developed countries on account of increasingly stringent pollution control legislation, resulting in a higher cost of production. A ferro-alloy industry with a capacity of 80000 MT per annum was selected to study the nature of pollution. Because of the objectionable nature of polluting air in and around the plant it was located in a rural area where there was no other industry. The area was agriculturally active and there was no effective control system for this plant.The quality of ambient air around the plant site is discussed in this paper along with the meteorological conditions. The maximum concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) was 768 µg/NM3 downwind of the plant, minimum 184 µg/NM3, and the average was more than 446 µg/NM3. The presence of heavy metals, viz. Fe, Mn, Cr and Pb, was also assessed. The concentration of Fe was 50 µg/NM3 downwind and 10 µg/NM3 upwind. The concentration of other metals followed a similar trend. 相似文献

The concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in fish, shrimps, cattle fat and human serum samples from the Sene-Gambian region were measured using validated analytical methodologies. The results obtained were compared with those of other existing African studies and with data from other developing countries. In fish samples, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) and HCB were detected with a frequency of 100%, whereas p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT) was detected in eight, heptachlorepoxide in six and endosulfansulfate in five of the nine fish samples. Relatively low concentrations of OCPs were found in cattle and shrimp fat samples. p,p'-DDE and alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH) were the most frequently identified. The sum of HCHs ranged from undetected to 13.3 ng g-1 fat, the sum of DDTs from 11.1 to 199.2 ng g-1 fat and the sum of endosulfans from not detected to 49.7 ng g-1 fat in fish and shrimps. In serum samples, alpha-HCH, p,p'-DDE, o,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDT were detected in all 16 pooled serum samples, whereas endosulfansulfate, methoxychlor, mirex, heptachlorepoxide and endrin were detected in 15 samples with most of the concentrations below 10 ng mL-1. The concentrations of OCPs in human serum were given on a serum lipid and whole serum volume basis. The implications for the human diet of these OCP concentrations in serum were investigated by means of biomagnification factors related to the log Kow values of the targeted compounds. The current use of HCH mixtures was suggested to explain the unusually high alpha-HCH concentration. The distribution pattern of these OCPs in humans was also discussed and compared with that in other studies. 相似文献

The CO, NO and NO2 concentrations, visibility and air flow velocity were measured using continuous analysers in a long Norwegian road tunnel (7.5 km) with traffic in both directions in April 1994 and 1995. The traffic density was monitored at the same time. The NO2 concentration exceeded Norwegian air quality limits for road tunnels 17% of the time in 1994. The traffic through the tunnel decreased from 1994 to 1995, and the mean NO2 concentration was reduced from 0.73 to 0.22 ppm. The ventilation fan control, based on the CO concentration only, was unsatisfactory and the air flow was sometimes low for hours. Models for NO2 concentration based on CO concentration and absolute air flow velocity were developed and tested. The NO2/NOx ratio showed an increase for NOx levels above 2 ppm; a likely explanation for this phenomenon is NO oxidation by O2. Exposure to high NO2 concentrations may represent a health risk for people with respiratory and cardiac diseases. In long road tunnels with two-way traffic, this study indicates that ventilation fan control based on CO concentration should be adjusted for changes in vehicle CO emission and should be supplemented by air flow monitoring to limit the NO2 concentration. 相似文献
