Activated carbon (AC) has recently been shown to be effective in sequestering persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from aquatic sediments. Most studies have demonstrated significant reductions of POP concentrations in water and in aquatic organisms; however, limited data exist on the possibility of using AC to immobilize remaining POPs at terrestrial contaminated sites. Under greenhouse conditions, pumpkin ssp cv. Howden) were grown, and red wiggler worms () were exposed to an industrial contaminated soil containing a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), i.e., Aroclors 1254 and 1260) treated with one of four concentrations of AC (0.2, 0.8, 3.1, and 12.5%) for 2 mo. The addition of AC to contaminated soils virtually eliminated the bioavailability of PCBs to the plant and invertebrate species. There were reductions in PCB concentrations of more than 67% in ssp and 95% in . These data suggest that AC could be included as part of comprehensive site closure strategy at PCB-contaminated sites.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling (RSS) can be a useful environmental sampling method when measurement costs are high but ranking costs are low. RSS estimates of the population mean can have higher precision than estimates from a simple random sample (SRS) of the same size, leading to potentially lower sampling costs from RSS than from SRS for a given precision. However, RSS introduces ranking costs not present in SRS; these costs must be considered in determining whether RSS is cost effective. We use a simple cost model to determine the minimum ratio of measurement to ranking costs (cost ratio) necessary in order for RSS to be as cost effective as SRS for data from the normal, exponential, and lognormal distributions. We consider both equal and unequal RSS allocations and two types of estimators of the mean: the typical distribution‐free (DF) estimator and the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE). The minimum cost ratio necessary for RSS to be as cost effective as SRS depends on the underlying distribution of the data, as well as the allocation and type of estimator used. Most minimum necessary cost ratios are in the range of 1–6, and are lower for BLUEs than for DF estimators. The higher the prior knowledge of the distribution underlying the data, the lower the minimum necessary cost ratio and the more attractive RSS is over SRS. We consider the use of generalized additive models with correlated errors for analysing trends in time series. The trend is represented as a smoothing spline so that it can be extrapolated. A method is proposed for choosing the smoothing parameter. It is based on the ability to predict a short term into the future. The choice not only addresses the purpose in hand, but also performs very well, and avoids the tendency to under‐smooth or to interpolate the data that can occur with other data‐driven methods used to choose the smoothing parameter. Characterization of the evolving yield loci and forming limit diagrams for sheet materials under biaxial loading is necessary for the development of accurate sheet metal forming process simulations. Biaxial tension testing has been shown to have significant advantages over the current computational and experimental methods for such material characterization; however, the few commercially available loading frames are far too large and expensive to be practical for most metal forming research laboratories. In this paper, the design of a practical servohydraulic biaxial loading frame is presented. The design, control, and operation of the loading frame are discussed in detail, and experimental data is provided to validate the effectiveness of the control system with respect to specimen center shifting.  相似文献

Nitrogen application can have a significant effect on soil carbon (C) pools, plant biomass production, and microbial biomass C processing. The focus of this study was to investigate the short-term effect of N fertilization on soil CO(2) emission and microbial biomass C. The study was conducted from 2001 to 2003 at four field sites in Iowa representing major soil associations and with a corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) rotation. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications of four N rates (0, 90, 180, and 225 kg ha(-1)). In the corn year, season-long cumulative soil CO(2) emission was greatest with the zero N application. There was no effect of N applied in the prior year on CO(2) emission in the soybean year, except at one of three sites, where greater applied N decreased CO(2) emission. Soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and net mineralization in soil collected during the corn year was not significantly increased with increase in N rate in two out of three sites. At all sites, soil CO(2) emission from aerobically incubated soil showed a more consistent declining trend with increase in N rate than found in the field. Nitrogen fertilization of corn reduced the soil CO(2) emission rate and seasonal cumulative loss in two out of three sites, and increased MBC at only one site with the highest N rate. Nitrogen application resulted in a reduction of both emission rate and season-long cumulative emission of CO(2)-C from soil.  相似文献
