It has been demonstrated repeatedly that the degree to which regulation operates and the magnitude of environmental variation in an exploited population will together dictate the type of sustainable harvest achievable. Yet typically, harvest models fail to incorporate uncertainty in the underlying dynamics of the target population by assuming a particular (unknown) form of endogenous control. We use a novel approach to estimate the sustainable yield of saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) populations from major river systems in the Northern Territory, Australia, as an example of a system with high uncertainty. We used multimodel inference to incorporate three levels of uncertainty in yield estimation: (1) uncertainty in the choice of the underlying model(s) used to describe population dynamics, (2) the error associated with the precision and bias of model parameter estimation, and (3) environmental fluctuation (process error). We demonstrate varying strength of evidence for density regulation (1.3-96.7%) for crocodiles among 19 river systems by applying a continuum of five dynamical models (density-independent with and without drift and three alternative density-dependent models) to time series of density estimates. Evidence for density dependence increased with the number of yearly transitions over which each river system was monitored. Deterministic proportional maximum sustainable yield (PMSY) models varied widely among river systems (0.042-0.611), and there was strong evidence for an increasing PMSY as support for density dependence rose. However, there was also a large discrepancy between PMSY values and those produced by the full stochastic simulation projection incorporating all forms of uncertainty, which can be explained by the contribution of process error to estimates of sustainable harvest. We also determined that a fixed-quota harvest strategy (up to 0.2K, where K is the carrying capacity) reduces population size much more rapidly than proportional harvest (the latter strategy requiring temporal monitoring of population size to adjust harvest quotas) and greatly inflates the risk of resource depletion. Using an iconic species recovering from recent extreme overexploitation to examine the potential for renewed sustainable harvest, we have demonstrated that incorporating major forms of uncertainty into a single quantitative framework provides a robust approach to modeling the dynamics of exploited populations.  相似文献

In a continuing investigation of dark CO2 uptake by nitrogen-limited cultures of the marine diatom Chaetoceros simplex (Bbsm), we expanded on several of our earlier conclusions regarding the potential application of this physiological response for measuring the degree and type of nitrogen limitation in phytoplankton populations. First, the duration over which the maximal enhancement of dark 14CO2 uptake was sustained after NH 4 + enrichment was a function both of the concentration of added NH 4 + and the standing crop of phytoplankton nitrogen — in effect, the total N demand. Second, pulsing with NH 4 + for a given degree of N-limitation always produced the same level of enhanced dark CO2 uptake regardless of whether the cultures were preconditioned with oxidized or reduced nitrogen. In contrast, urea pulsing led to reduced dark CO2 uptake, but the effect was most pronounced in cells grown on NO 3 . And third, the assay could be used to distinguish readily between no, moderate, and severe N limitation. The degree of severe N limitation was quantitatively correlated with the degree of enhanced dark CO2 uptake, but this relationship was not so clear in the region of moderate N limitation. The main advantage of the assay is that it is a relatively simple and effective alternative to more complicated techniques for gauging the degree and form of N limitation in phytoplankton. This paper explores the relationships between extent of video display terminal usage, perceptions of the physical work environment, task characteristics, and workers' health and well-being among a group of 1032 female office clerical workers. Data are drawn from responses to a 30-minute questionnaire administered at four employment sites during 1981 and 1982. All-day terminal users reported significantly higher levels of job and physical environment stressors than part-day VDT users, typists and non machine-interactive clerical workers. Reports of musculo-skeletal strain and dissatisfaction were also highest among all day terminal users. Part-day VDT users, typists and clerks all reported relatively similar levels of job and physical working conditions, health symptoms and job satisfaction. No significant differences between any of the groups were observed for gastrointestinal, respiratory, psychological and other non-specific health complaints. Typists and clerical workers who also held supervisory positions reported fewer stressors and greater job satisfaction than workers with no supervisory tasks; however there were no such differences between supervisors and non-supervisors engaged in all-day VDT work. Implications of these findings for further research and for job redesign strategies to alleviate the potentially stressful aspects of office automation are discussed.  相似文献

Competition among males to mate is generally associated with male-biased size dimorphism. In this study we examine mating behavior in the northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon), a species in which males are much smaller than females despite substantial competition among males to mate. Competition among males was a consequence of a male-biased operational sex ratio due to slightly higher female mortality from a birth sex ratio of 1 : 1, and, in 1 year, more synchronous and longer mating activity by males. Approximately one-third of both males and females appeared not to mate in a given year. Larger males were generally more likely to attempt mating, but size did not explain the variance in the number of aggregations in which individual males participated. Within aggregations, males that were successful at achieving intromission were larger than unsuccessful males in 1 of 2 years. Variation in condition (mass relative to length) and relative tail length were not generally useful predictors of either mating effort or success in males. Because large size was often advantageous to males, sexual size dimorphism appeared not to be a consequence of sexual selection favoring smaller males. Because sexual dimorphism was evident at birth, and both males and females matured sexually at about 4 years, sexual dimorphism was not simply a consequence of one sex growing at the maximum rate for longer. Female fecundity increased with size, and sex differences in size-fecundity relations may underly the pattern of sexual size dimorphism. However, because multiple mating by females is common, sperm competition is likely to be important in determining male reproductive success. Therefore, allocation of energy to sperm rather than growth may also prove to be an important influence on male growth rates and sexual size dimorphism.  相似文献

The nitrogenous nutrition of the phytoplankton in Vineyeard Sound, Massachusetts, USA was investigated over a 15-month period. Highest rates of ammonium uptake were observed immediately prior to, or during, the diatom bloom periods, and with one exception were found in the <10 m size class. The saturating rate of ammonium uptake correlated well with temperature and gave Q10 values of 2.6–3.2; correlations with ambient solar irradiation were not nearly so clear. Uptake rates of ammonium exceeded those of nitrate except during the winter bloom of the diatom Rhizosolenia delicatula; yet calculation of the f ratio revealed that nitrate was relatively important in the nitrogenous nutrition of the phytoplankton throughout the year.Contribution no. 5096 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution  相似文献

The caridean shrimp Hippolyte californiensis Holmes locates its host plant, the eel grass Zostera marina, visually, discriminating it on the basis of its form. Using models of the plant, the form-specific sign stimuli optimally releasing the host-selection response were investigated. Shrimps preferentially approached dark forms presented against a lighter background. The more a form contrasted with the background, the higher was its stimulatory value. Shrimps showed differential responses to solid forms of varying shape, preferring a stripe-like rectangle in a vertical orientation. Rectangular forms 50° (visual angle) or more in height and between 12° and 20° in width were maximally stimulating. Patterns of several vertical stripes had a greater releasing value for the approach response than a solid rectangle form of optimal dimensions. The greater the spatial frequency of a striped pattern, the reater was its attractiveness. Shrimps discriminated patterns of stripes whose elements were as small as 2° wide, giving an estimate of their visual acuity. Along with the relative contrast, the most important stimulus parameters of striped patterns are the continuous, straight form of the edges and their vertical orientation. It is postulated that the scototactic response of H. californiensis to relatively large, dark, solid forms is involved in the distant detection of clumps of eel grass. Summary A combination of behavioral and chemical analyses was used to investigate the nature of nestmate recognition cues and the effects of worker age and social experience on these cues in the ant Camponotus floridanus. Five categories of workers were tested: foragers, 5-day old and 0-day old callows, 5-day old and 0-day old naive callows. Bioassays consisted of introductions of dead workers from these categories into their own colonies or into an alien colony after the following treatments: 1) killed by freezing, 2) solvent-washed, 3) solvent-washed and coated with a nestmate soak, 4) solvent-washed and coated with a non-nestmate soak. Soaks were obtained from individual ants immersed in hexane and were applied individually to washed workers from the same category. Soaks were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and compared by multivariate analyses. Freeze-killed workers from each category elicited more aggressive behavior in the alien colony than in its own. By comparing GC profiles, a worker from any category can be assigned to its colony of origin. Thus all studied worker categories are colony-specific. Solvent-washed ants did not induce more aggressive behaviors in the alien colony than in their own, but they induced significantly less aggressivity in an alien colony than non-treated dead ants from the same category. Washed ants indced more aggressive behaviors when coated with a soak from a different colony as opposed to a soak from the colony in which they were introduced. The combination of behavioral and chemical results lead to the following conclusions: 1) Information contained in soak derived from workers was sufficient to allow nestmate recognition. 2) Nestmate recognition cues, and consequently the recognition response displayed to their bearer, change with age. 3) Social experience is necessary to develop or acquire a colony-specific label. The role of age and social experience on nestmate recognition in social Hymenoptera is discussed.  相似文献
