Homocystinuria due to cystathionine β-synthase deficiency was excluded in a fetus at 23 weeks' gestation by demonstrating activity of the enzyme in fetal lymphocytes after stimulation by phytohaemagglutinin. Storage of large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep geologic formations for greenhouse-gas mitigation is gaining momentum and moving from its conceptual and testing stages towards widespread application. In this work we explore various optimization strategies for characterizing surface leakage (seepage) using near-surface measurement approaches such as accumulation chambers and eddy covariance towers. Seepage characterization objectives and limitations need to be defined carefully from the outset especially in light of large natural background variations that can mask seepage. The cost and sensitivity of seepage detection are related to four critical length scales pertaining to the size of the: (1) region that needs to be monitored; (2) footprint of the measurement approach, and (3) main seepage zone; (4) region in which concentrations or fluxes are influenced by seepage. Seepage characterization objectives may include one or all of the tasks of detecting, locating, and quantifying seepage. Each of these tasks has its own optimal strategy. Detecting and locating seepage in a region in which there is no expected or preferred location for seepage nor existing evidence for seepage requires monitoring on a fixed grid, e.g., using eddy covariance towers. The fixed-grid approaches needed to detect seepage are expected to require large numbers of eddy covariance towers for large-scale geologic CO2 storage. Once seepage has been detected and roughly located, seepage zones and features can be optimally pinpointed through a dynamic search strategy, e.g., employing accumulation chambers and/or soil-gas monitoring. Quantification of seepage rates can be done through measurements on a localized fixed grid once the seepage is pinpointed. Background measurements are essential for seepage detection in natural ecosystems. Artificial neural networks are considered as regression models useful for distinguishing natural system behavior from anomalous behavior suggestive of CO2 seepage without need for detailed understanding of natural system processes. Because of the local extrema in CO2 fluxes and concentrations in natural systems, simple steepest-descent algorithms are not effective and evolutionary computation algorithms are proposed as a paradigm for dynamic monitoring networks to pinpoint CO2 seepage areas.  相似文献

Bench-scale testing of elemental mercury (Hg0) sorption on selected activated carbon sorbents was conducted to develop a better understanding of the interaction among the sorbent, flue gas constituents, and Hg0. The results of the fixed-bed testing under simulated lignite combustion flue gas composition for activated carbons showed some initial breakthrough followed by increased mercury (Hg) capture for up to approximately 4.8 hr. After breakthrough, the Hg in the effluent stream was primarily in an oxidized form (>90%). Aliquots of selected activated carbons were exposed to simulated flue gas containing Hg0 vapor for varying time intervals to explore surface chemistry changes as the initial breakthrough, Hg capture, and oxidation occurred. The samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to determine changes in the abundance and forms of sulfur, chlorine, oxygen, and nitrogen moieties as a result of interactions of flue gas components on the activated carbon surface during the sorption process. The data are best explained by a competition between the bound hydrogen chloride (HCl) and increasing sulfur [S(VI)] for a basic carbon binding site. Because loss of HCl is also coincident with Hg breakthrough or loss of the divalent Hg ion (Hg2+), the competition of Hg2+ with S(VI) on the basic carbon site is also implied. Thus, the role of the acid gases in Hg capture and release can be explained.  相似文献

Sulfur dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are commonly determined by the West-Gaeke and electro-conductivity methods. As a part of the United States-Japan Cooperative Air Pollution Measurement Studies, parallel sampling with a 24-hr bubbler, a 1-hr bubbler, and an electroconductivity instrument was conducted in Kawasaki, Japan, between Jan. 12 and Mar. 25 and between Aug. 19 and Sept. 30, 1966. These time periods were chosen because of the seasonal variation in the air pollution levels. Fair agreement was obtained between the 24-hr sample values and the daily mean values of the 24 hourly samples analyzed by the West-Gaeke method. Sulfur dioxide concentrations determined by the electroconductivity method were greater than those determined by the West-Gaeke method, particularly in the winter season. Relationships between the sulfur dioxide concentrations determined by these two methods are discussed.  相似文献

Since 1994, there has been a significant regulatory shift toward risk-based cleanup standards based on the site-specific risk of the more toxic and mobile compounds; namely, benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTEX). This regulatory shift has been accompanied by a growing acceptance of natural attenuation as an important component of petroleum site remediation. This article briefly reviews regulatory progress toward risk-based remediation and describes the successful application of risk-based corrective actions (RBCAs) at two fuel contaminated sites on Air Force installations. By developing site-specific cleanup goals, and combining natural attenuation, source reduction, and land use controls, innovative risk-based closure plans have been implemented on these sites.  相似文献

A total of 25 scenes representing the five visual quality objectives in the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service visual management system were presented to 18 professional and public interest groups in western Montana. The results indicate that nearly all the groups have similar rank orderings of the scenes in terms of visual preference. However, the groups differ according to the absolute values of their ratings. Most groups were unable, in a statistical sense, to differentiate the scenic quality of areas in the preservation and retention visual quality objectives. Landscape architects tended to rate scenes in a way similar to professional forest management groups.  相似文献

Anthopleura elegantissima containing zooxanthellae, as well as isolated zooxanthellae, incubated with acetate-1-14C under both light and dark conditions readily incorporate radioactivity into their total lipid pools. In both cases, the specific activity was greatly increased in the light. Dark-incubated anemones and isolated zooxanthellae incorporate activity predominantly into polar lipid; the remainder being present principally in the triglyceride moiety. Light-incubated organisms, however, show a dramatic redistribution of isotope towards greatly increased triglyceride and was ester incorporation, with a concomitant drop in polar lipid. onder light conditions, 70 to 75% of the radioactivity found in the fatty acids of the total zooxanthellae lipid was present in hexadecanoic (16:0) and octadecenoic (18:1) fatty acids. These are also the two major fatty acids by mass. Octadecanoic acid (18:0) is less than 5% by mass. Isotope incorporation patterns suggest that octadecenoic acids arise by elongation of hexadecenoic acids and that this conversion is blocked in the dark. Isotope incorporation patterns for anemones suggest that fatty acids, primarily in the form of saturated or monoenoic fatty acids, are translocated from algal to animal cells. No activity was found in either octadecadienoic (18:2) or octadecatrienoic (18:3) acids. The significance of these data is discussed.  相似文献
