The empirical direct distribution model for lake acidification is calibrated for use in an integrated assessment model which predicts the regional impact of an acid deposition control strategy. The calibration is based on the mechanistic Model of Acidification of Groundwater in Catchments (MAGIC). The models are applied jointly to a set of 33 statistically-selected lakes in the Adirondack region of New York. Calibration of the direct distribution model is based on a step-function application of acid deposition to MAGIC. Comparative evaluations of the resulting model predictions are made using historic deposition estimates and two alternative future deposition scenarios. The predictions of the direct distribution model match well the shapes and patterns of change of the regional distributions of ANC and pH predicted by MAGIC, the short- and medium-term dynamics of these changes, and the effect of including organic acids. However, small, long-term decreases in the fraction of incoming acid deposition neutralized by lakes and their watersheds predicted by MAGIC are not reproduced.  相似文献

Chemical sequestration is a natural process taking place in sediments and soils which reduces the availability of hydrophobic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The rate of sequestration following the release of PAHs into the aquatic environment is still unexplored. To measure kinetic parameters and investigate governing factors of adsorption and sequestration of individual PAHs, natural sediment slurries were spiked with [2H]-PAHs and periodically extracted with a high molecular weight surfactant solution to determine changes in the available fraction over periods of 7-28 days. Dissolved and/or colloidal [2H]-PAHs were first adsorbed on particles within 4-7 days. Adsorbed molecules became slowly sequestered into sediment particles and were gradually more difficult to extract over a period of 17-20 days. An empirical model based on a three-compartment dynamic system was developed to quantify the sequestration rate constants of a group of seven selected PAHs. The sequestration process was assumed to be a first-order consecutive and irreversible two-stage reaction. The model was tested with lowly contaminated marine sediment and moderately contaminated freshwater sediment. Adsorption rate constants ranged between 0.056 h(-1) and 0.017 h(-1) and were approximately ten times higher than sequestration rate constants. Light PAHs were faster to enter into the sequestration process whereas colloidal dispersion of heavier less soluble PAHs reduced their adsorption rates. Although quite simple, this model was efficient to compute kinetic parameters for most PAHs studied and predict that only a small proportion of adsorbed PAHs would remain extractable after one month.  相似文献

Butyltins (BTs) were determined in sediment, zooplankton, benthic fish and invertebrates in the St. Lawrence Estuary and its mixing zone with the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Canada) in an attempt to assess sources and fate of these compounds in a large ecosystem before the enforcement of the world-wide ban of TBT-based antifouling paints. All BTs (MBT, DBT and TBT) were found along the studied area (450 km) where the traffic of large vessels occurs around the year. Concentrations of total butyltins (BTs) in surface sediment were below 6 ng Sn g(-1) d.w. Total BTs concentrations found in zooplankton samples at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord were the highest (793 ng Sn g(-1) d.w.), indicating the influence of the Fjord on the St. Lawrence contamination. Although a relatively low contamination level was measured in sediment, total BTs concentrations ranged from 9 to 489 ng Sn g(-1) d.w. for benthic organisms. Biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs), calculated on the basis of the organic carbon content in the sediment (concentrations normalized to 1% Corg), ranged from 0.9 to 98.3, and are an indicator of an important source of BTs from the Saguenay Fjord particulate matter. This may be explained by the fact that when TBT is released in a large and deep well stratified coastal environment, it could bind to the suspended particulate matter and then be taken in charge by water column organisms and may be mostly metabolised before it reaches bottom sediment. Sediment is not considered as the main contributor to the contamination of fish and invertebrates. It is expected that any reduction of direct inputs of TBT from ship hulls in a near future should result in a rapid reduction of butyltins in the St. Lawrence ecosystem.  相似文献

The implementation of an ecological risk assessment framework is presented for dredged material deposits on soil close to a canal and groundwater, and tested with sediment samples from canals in northern France. This framework includes two steps: a simplified risk assessment based on contaminant concentrations and a detailed risk assessment based on toxicity bioassays and column leaching tests. The tested framework includes three related assumptions: (a) effects on plants (Lolium perenne L.), (b) effects on aquatic organisms (Escherichia coli, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Ceriodaphnia dubia, and Xenopus laevis) and (c) effects on groundwater contamination. Several exposure conditions were tested using standardised bioassays. According to the specific dredged material tested, the three assumptions were more or less discriminatory, soil and groundwater pollution being the most sensitive. Several aspects of the assessment procedure must now be improved, in particular assessment endpoint design for risks to ecosystems (e.g., integration of pollutant bioaccumulation), bioassay protocols and column leaching test design.  相似文献

Adaptation research has changed significantly in recent years as funders and researchers seek to encourage greater impact, ensure value for money and promote interdisciplinarity across the natural and social sciences. While these developments are inherently positive, they also bring fresh challenges. With this in mind, this paper presents an agenda for the next generation of climate adaptation research for development. The agenda is based on insights from a dialogue session held at the 2016 Adaptation Futures conference as well as drawing on the collective experience of the authors. We propose five key areas that need to be changed in order to meet the needs of future adaptation research, namely: increasing transparency and consultation in research design; encouraging innovation in the design and delivery of adaptation research programmes; demonstrating impact on the ground; addressing incentive structures; and promoting more effective brokering, knowledge management and learning. As new international funding initiatives start to take shape, we underscore the importance of learning from past experiences and scaling-up of successful innovations in research funding models.

Flume experiments were carried out in 1993 with specially designed collectors and inert particles to optimize the effect of various structural components of scallop spat collectors. The structural components considered were monofilament diameter and density, and mesh size of external bags. Results showed that abundance of particles trapped in silicone-treated collectors did not vary significantly with monofilament diameter. The heterogeneous arrangement of monofilament also proved to be an important factor. Combinations of monofilament of three different diameters (0.17, 0.55 and 0.90 mm), the thinnest being the upstream one, collected at least twice as many particles than all other single one-sized monofilament collectors. Particle abundance decreased with decreasing density of monofilament, and the densest arrangement of monofilament captured over four times more particles than the least dense arrangement. Collectors with an external bag of intermediate mesh size (0.4×0.5 cm) were the most efficient at collecting particles. The effect of flow speed was also investigated. Particles were trapped in significantly greater numbers at flow velocities of 5 cm s-1 than at lower or higher velocities. These results are consistent with results of field experiments carried out to optimize the design of scallop collectors. Enhancement of spat collection is possible by modifying collectors. Agricultural practices can lead to copper accumulation in soils and at high concentration it can become toxic for plants. One common toxic effect of copper on plants is a decrease of crop yield. Here, we studied 1) the crop yield of maize grown on plots of a soil intentionally enriched with copper sulphate and 2) the possible relationship between the copper concentration in chemical soil fractions and the maize crop yield. Anthropogenic copper is mainly bound to manganese oxides, to iron oxides and to the organic matter. Maize (Zea maize L.) was grown on outdoor experimental plots. The crop yield was evaluated for three development stages: the 6–10 leaf stage, the female flowering stage and the maturity stage, 2, 4 and 6 years after the soil copper enrichment. Strong crop yield reductions, proving a toxic effect of copper on maize growth were noted 2 years after the copper input at the maturity stage and 4 years after the copper input at the 6–10 leaf stage. Variations in maize crop yield are described with linear multiple regression equations including the variable copper content in soil, and other variables when needed such as soil pH, soil organic carbon level and the climatic variables, the precipitation rate and the ambient temperature. The crop yield study at the 6–10 leaf stage and at the female flowering stage does not provide significant regression equations, while the crop yield study at the maturity stage does.
