PCDD/F and PCB concentrations in remote mountainous spruce stands of the Central European Alps show strong geographic variation. Independent of the matrix (0.5 year old needles, humus or mineral soil), the highest pollutant levels were always found at the lateral zones of the mountain range. High levels coincided with strong precipitation, particularly along the northern margin of the study region. The most volatile PCB congener propagated farther into the colder, drier central Alps than the heavier species. Matrices with different accumulation history (needles and humus) repeatedly reflected different spatial immission patterns. Consistent with its much longer exposure, pollutant levels in humus exceeded those of needles by up to two orders of magnitude. A gel permeation chromatographic (GPC) clean-up based method was developed for determination of selected organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in human serum. The method permits automation of the sample extract clean-up stage and is designed to work with small amounts of sample. Different working variables were studied in its development, including injection volume, flow rate, and fat amount as the most representative coextract. The method provides solvent and time savings. Initial extraction was performed using 96-well solid-phase disk extraction plates, and quantification was performed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection and mass spectrometry. Recoveries of PCB congeners 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, and 180 and organochlorine pesticides HCB, β-HCH, γ-HCH, heptachlor epoxide, p,p′-DDE, and p,p′-DDT at two spiking levels ranged from 55% to 115% with relative standard deviations ranging from 2.0% to 14.6%. Limits of quantification ranged from 0.06 to 0.16 ng mL−1 for PCBs and from 0.12 to 0.36 ng mL−1 for organochlorine pesticides. Finally, the method was applied to the analysis of 38 serum samples and the results were compared with those of another procedure validated at the laboratory. 相似文献

The release of arsenic from technosols was monitored using short-term dynamic leaching of homogeneous soil columns with native solution. Large amounts of readily available arsenic (16 mg kg?1) were extracted from arsenic-rich ashy samples while representing less than 4 wt % of their total contents. In the first hour of leaching, the observed concentrations of water-soluble arsenic ranged from 650 to 830 μg L?1, further increasing in the following leachates. The results showed that the concentrations of water-soluble arsenic were several times higher than the recommended limits for drinking water. Yet, most of arsenic is strongly bound to amorphous aluminosilicate phases. The contents of arsenic in the studied plant samples, including calculated transfer factors, confirmed that increased concentrations of arsenic in the soil of geological environment affected by dam failure of a coal ash pond may have a negative effect on crops since arsenic becomes part of the food chain. 相似文献

The main objective of this paper is to evaluate how a choice of different background values may affect assessing the anthropogenic heavy metal pollution in sediments from Tisza River (Serbia). The second objective of this paper is to underline significance of using geochemical background values when establishing quality criteria for sediment. Enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (I geo), pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) were calculated using different background values. Three geochemical (average metal concentrations in continental crust, average metal concentrations in shale, and average metal concentrations in non-contaminated core sediment samples) and two statistical methods (delineation method and principal component analyses) were used for calculating background values. It can be concluded that obtained information of pollution status can be more dependent on the use of background values than the index/factor chosen. The best option to assess the potential river sediment contamination is to compare obtained concentrations of analyzed elements with concentrations of mineralogically and texturally comparable, uncontaminated core sediment samples. Geochemical background values should be taken into account when establishing quality criteria for soils, sediments, and waters. Due to complexity of the local lithology, it is recommended that environmental monitoring and assessment include selection of an appropriate background values to gain understanding of the geochemistry and potential source of pollution in a given environment. 相似文献

Mosses and lichens have an important role in biomonitoring. The objective of this study is to develop a neural network model to classify these plants according to geographical origin. A three-layer feed-forward neural network was used. The activities of radionuclides ((226)Ra, (238)U, (235)U, (40)K, (232)Th, (134)Cs, (137)Cs and (7)Be) detected in plant samples by gamma-ray spectrometry were used as inputs for neural network. Five different training algorithms with different number of samples in training sets were tested and compared, in order to find the one with the minimum root mean square error. The best predictive power for the classification of plants from 12 regions was achieved using a network with 5 hidden layer nodes and 3,000 training epochs, using the online back-propagation randomized training algorithm. Implementation of this model to experimental data resulted in satisfactory classification of moss and lichen samples in terms of their geographical origin. The average classification rate obtained in this study was (90.7 +/- 4.8)%. 相似文献

We have aimed at characterizing top soil samples taken in-situ from five different locations of the unregulated dumping site
in Eskişehir/Turkey for a period of six months. The study is the first attempt in the city and in Turkey, regarding particularly
the SPME (Solid Phase Microextraction Technique) analysis method utilized. A comprehensive research has been conducted to
produce critical soil data to be used for indicating current risks as well as the urgency of rehabilitating the site and establishing
a sanitary landfill in the site. Conventional physicochemical analytical methods and SPME technique were used to analyze the
samples. Physicochemical analyses were performed for determining the pH, total dried matter, volatile matter, total nitrogen,
phosphorus, macro elements and heavy metals. Meteorological data were also recorded for the same period. SPSS.10.0 statistical
program was used to determine the correlation between meteorological data and physicochemical analysis results. Mean values
were used in the correlation analyses. These data indicated that the air temperature and precipitation have significant effects
on soil characteristics. SPME, coupled with GC/MS, was used to identify eighty six volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds
contained in soil samples. The samples were extracted by headspace SPME with heating (δHS-SPME). SPME analyses were conducted
using a commercially available polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) fiber having a film thickness of 65 μm (Supelco)

This study aimed at assessing atmospheric deposition of heavy metals and other elements using the moss genera Brachythecium sp. (B. rutabulum and B. salebrosum) and Eurhynchium sp. (E. hians and E. striatum) collected in autumn 2004 in the urban area of Belgrade. The concentrations of 36 elements (Na, Mg, Al, Cl, K, Ca, Sc, Ti,
V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Mo, Sb, I, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Sm, Tb, Dy, Hf, Ta, W, Hg, Th, U) were determined
in moss and local topsoil samples by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The concentration of elements in moss positively
correlated to those obtained for topsoil. High enrichment factors for As, Zn, Mo, Br, Sb, Se, Hg and Cl, calculated to continental
crust composition, gave an evidence for anthropogenic impact on urban area, mainly due to intensive vehicular traffic and
fossil fuel combustion. The concentration of elements in moss, characteristic for fossil fuel combustion, obtained in this
study were substantially lower than in the previous investigation (2000) conducted in the area of Belgrade. The level of concentrations
for V, Cr, Ni, and As in moss from this study correlated to those measured for neighboring countries, and were several times
higher than the base-level data from low polluted areas. The level of accumulated elements in both investigated moss genera

Age, growth and population structure of Modiolus barbatus from Mali Ston Bay, Croatia were determined using modal size (age) classes in length frequency distributions, annual pallial
line scars on the inner shell surface, internal annual growth lines in shell sections of the middle nacreous layer and Calcein
marked and transplanted mussels. The length frequency distributions indicated that M. barbatus attain a length of ∼40 mm in 5–6 years indicating that a large proportion of the population in Mali Ston Bay is <5 years
old. Some mussels of ∼60 mm were predicted to be 14 years old using the Von Bertalanffy growth (VBG) equation. Up to the first
6 pallial line scars were visible in young (<6 years) mussels but in older shells the first scars became obscured by nacre
deposition as the mussel increased in length and age. The age of the older shells (>6 years) was determined from the middle
nacreous lines in shell section, which formed annually in winter between February and March; the wider dark increments forming
during summer (June to September). The oldest mussel, determined from the middle nacreous lines, was >12 years, with the majority
of mussels aged between 3 and 6 years of age. The ages of mussels ascertained using the growth lines were not dissimilar to
the ages predicted from the length frequency distributions. Age at length curves produced using modal size class data were
not different from the data obtained using the pallial scar rings and internal growth lines. Taken together these data suggest
that M. barbatus attains a length of 40 and 50 mm within 5 and 8 years, respectively. Eighty one percent of individual M. barbatus injected with a Calcein seawater solution (300 mg Calcein l−1), into their mantle cavity successfully deposited a fluorescent line, which was visible in suitably prepared shell sections
under ultra violet light. Incorporation of Calcein into the mussel shells was seasonally variable with the lowest frequency
of incorporation in mussels marked in February and recovered in May. Seasonal shell growth was observed with significantly
higher growth rates in mussels marked in May and removed in August (ANCOVA, F
3,149 = 23.11, P < 0.001). Mussels (∼18 to 22 mm) marked in May and recovered in August displayed maximal growth rates of >2.5 mm month−1 compared with a mean mussel growth rate of 1.2 ± 0.6 mm month−1. At other times of the year mussel shell growth ranged from immeasurable to 1.48 mm month−1. 相似文献
