In order to determine the optimal dosage and type of coagulant for the physico-chemical treatment of leachate from the sanitary landfill of Merida, Mexico, a total of 864 jar tests were performed. Four metallic coagulants (ferric chloride, ferric sulphate, aluminium polychloride and aluminium sulphate) with doses ranging between 50 and 300 mg L(-1) and two polyelectrolytes (high-density anionic and cationic reagents) with doses from 2 to 12 mg L(-1) were tested. Neither an adequate type of coagulant nor an optimal dose could be found. The removal of contaminants was measured as total and dissolved chemical oxygen demand (COD). Soluble COD removal efficiencies were low, from 0 to 47%, with a 4% average value only. These low values of organic material removal were attributed to the particular characteristics of the Merida landfill leachate (low suspended solids concentration), so even with sweep-floc coagulation (300 mg L(-1) dose) only low COD removal efficiencies were obtained. A study of the suspended particle size distribution of the leachate was conducted in order to explain the poor performance. The particle size distribution ranged from 0.375 to 948.2 microm, with an average value of 22.97 microm. In a second step the optimal pH for physico-chemical treatment of these leachates was determined. Finally a greater than 90% removal of organic material, measured as suspended COD, was obtained at pH 2, which was considered as the optimal value. 相似文献
The jumbo squid, Dosidicus gigas, is an oceanic top predator in the eastern tropical Pacific that undergoes diel vertical migrations into mesopelagic oxygen minimum zones (OMZs). Besides glycogen breakdown, the pathways of the squid’s metabolic (suppression) strategy are poorly understood. Here, juvenile D. gigas were exposed to oxygen levels found in the OMZ off Gulf of California (1 % O2, 1 kPa at 10 °C) with the aim to identify, via proteomic tools, eventual anaerobic protein degradation as potential energy source at such depths. Under hypoxia, total protein concentration decreased nonsignificantly from 79.2 ± 12.4 mg g?1 wet mass to 74.7 ± 11.7 mg g?1 wet mass (p > 0.05). Yet, there was a significant decrease in heat-shock protein (Hsp) 90 and α-actinin contents (p < 0.05). The lower α-actinin concentration at late hypoxia was probably related to decreased protection of the Hsp90 chaperon machinery resulting in increased ubiquitination (p < 0.05) and subsequent degradation. Thus, the present findings indicate that D. gigas might degrade, at least under progressing hypoxia, specific mantle proteins anaerobically to increase/maintain anaerobic ATP production and extend hypoxia exposure time. Moreover, the ubiquitin–proteasome system seems to play an important role in hypoxia tolerance, but further investigations are necessary to discover its full potential and pathways. 相似文献
Aljustrel mining area (South Portugal) is a part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt and encloses six sulfide mineral masses. This mine is classified of high environmental risk due to the large tailings’ volume and acid mine drainage (AMD)-affected waters generated by sulfides’ oxidation. The use of biological indicators (e.g., diatoms) revealed to be an important tool to address the degree of AMD contamination in waters. Multivariate analysis has been used as a relevant approach for the characterization of AMD processes. Cluster analysis was used to integrate the significant amount and diversity of variables (physicochemical and biological), discriminating the different types of waters, characterized by the high complexity occurring in this region. The distinction of two main marked phenomena was achieved: (1) the circumneutral-Na-Cl water type (sites DA, PF, BX, BF, RO, CB), expressing the geological contributions of the Cenozoic sediments of Sado river basin, with high diatom diversity (predominating brackish diatoms as Entomoneis alata); and (2) the acid–metal-sulfated water type (sites BM, JU, RJ, AA, MR, BE, PC, AF), reflecting both the AMD contamination and the dissolution of minerals (e.g., silicates) from the hosting rocks, potentiated by the extremely low pH. This last group of sites showed lower diatom diversity but with typical diatoms from acid- and metal-contaminated waters (e.g., Pinnularia aljustrelica). In addition to these two water types, this hierarchical classification method also allowed to distinguish individual cases in subclusters, for example, treated dams (DC, DD), with alkaline substances (lime/limestone), that changed the physicochemical dynamics of the contaminated waters.
This article outlines a methodology to help agencies better determine whether or not relief seed is needed by farmers affected by disaster. A brief review of current seed needs assessment procedures in southern Somalia and Mozambique illustrates problems of knowing which crops and households are affected, the importance of seed access (not just availability) and the need to plan interventions earlier than at present. The development of a Seed Systems Profile (SSP) is proposed to understand better both the socio-economic and agro-ecological aspects of farmers' seed systems. A five-step framework for assessing seed systems in disaster situations is also presented. These tools are currently being tested and further refined in Mozambique. A better understanding of farmers' seed systems will allow for the development of relief and rehabilitation interventions that effectively enhance the resilience and reduce the vulnerability of these systems. 相似文献
Twenty-one severely eroded soils of SE Spain (Torriorthent xeric soils) were studied. These soils form a fragile system characterized
by soils with a low density of plant cover (<5%), are loamy and occur in a semiarid climate. The soils formerly were used
for agricultural purposes but were abandoned at least 15 years ago. These eroded soils had a low total organic carbon content,
and their humic substances, humic acid carbon, and carbohydrates were lower compared with soils that had never been cultivated
(natural soils). The variables in which the effects of erosion were particularly noted were those related with the active
organic matter (respiration and water-soluble organic matter). Those eroded soils with higher salt content showed lower organic
matter and carbohydrate contents. Only total nitrogen was correlated with the carbon fractions in the eroded soils. 相似文献
Total mercury content was evaluated in water and suspended sediment samples of the Moji-Gua?u river and in water and bottom sediment of its 3 marginal lagoons (Catingueiro, Barrinha, and Rio das Pedras), located downstream of the sampling point in the main channel. In all situations, low Hg concentrations were found in suspended and bottom sediments. Aluminum was used as a geochemical tracer to normalize the Hg concentrations in the sediment cores from the Rio das Pedras lagoon (r = 0.92). It was estimated that the Moji-Gua?u river transports up to 19 kg Hg yr(-1), 65% in the dissolved form and 35% adsorbed onto particulate matter. Following an acute toxic stage observed in the years 1970-1980, the basin has been restored to its original conditions mainly by natural recovery and a general reduction in Hg input to the ecosystem. 相似文献
Acrylonitrile–Butadiene–Styrene (ABS), Polycarbonate (PC) and their alloys are widely used in automotive industry, computer
and equipment housings. With increasing disposal of end-of-life electronic equipment, there is also an increased demand for
recycling of these materials so that they do not pose environmental challenge as solid waste. One of the recycling approaches
is mechanical recycling of these thermoplastics where recycled plastic is melt blended with virgin materials to obtain a high
quality product. Besides obtaining desirable mechanical properties, such blends should also conform to fire safety standards.
In this work, a series of blends were prepared using PC and ABS recovered from discarded computers and virgin materials using
a twin-screw extruder. Their flammability properties were evaluated using burner flammability tests and Ohio State University
(OSU) release rate tests. It was found that the extinguishing time, burning extent and weight loss appears to progressively
decrease with the addition of both virgin or recycled PC to virgin or recycled ABS. It was also seen that the addition of
the 70% of PC, virgin or recycled, to ABS virgin or recycled, appears to significantly decrease heat release and smoke evolution.
The results of this study indicate that recycled polycarbonate can be used as an additive for virgin or recycled ABS, as a
means of giving flame resistance to ABS in high-value applications. This result is significant when related to the result
obtained by a separate study indicating that up to 25% of recycled material can be used without degradation of mechanical
properties in the presence of 15% short glass fiber reinforcement. 相似文献
