Inbreeding depression is environmentally dependent, such that a population may suffer from inbreeding depression in one environment but not another. We examined the phenotypic responses of 35 inbred ( F = 0.672) lineages of the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum in two different climatic environments. We found a significant environmental effect on males but not females. More important, we found that the rank fitness order of lineages differs between environments; lineages of high fitness in one environment may have low fitness in another environment. This change in rank is evident in a significant genotype-by-environment interaction for inbreeding depression for both females and males. These results suggest that even if we know the average environmental effect of inbreeding depression in a population, for any particular lineage measurements of inbreeding depression in one environment may not predict the level of inbreeding depression in another environment. Conservation biologists need to be aware of the environmental dependency of inbreeding depression when planning wildlife refuges or captive propagation programs for small populations. Ideally, captive propagation programs should maintain separate lineages for release efforts. Refuge design programs should consider maintaining a range of habitat types.  相似文献

The effects of salinity and acclimation time on the net photosynthetic responses of 3 estuarine red algae, Bostrychia radicans Mont., Caloglossa leprieurii (Mont.) J. Ag., and Polysiphonia subtilissima Mont., from Great Bay Estuary, New Jersey, USA, were investigated. The algae were cultured in a series of synthetic seawater media of 5, 15, 25 and 35% S for acclimation periods of 0, 2, 4, 8, and 16 days prior to determining their photosynthetic responses. All species were euryhaline, and demonstrated photosynthesis at all the above salinities. B. radicans, which was more common towards the mouth of the estuary, had a maximum photosynthetic rate at 25% S, whilst C. leprieurii and P. subtilissima, which were more common towards the head of the estuary, had photosynthetic maxima between 15 and 25%, and at 15%, respectively. The curves relating net photosynthesis to salinity were usually similar within a species at different acclimation periods, although statistically significant differences were sometimes noted. The acclimation periods producing maximal net photosynthesis were 0, 2 and 4 days for B. radicans, and 4 days for C. leprieurii, whilst for P. subtilissima there was no significant difference in response for any acclimation period over the range of salinities studied.  相似文献

The solidification/stabilization of sodium arsenite, sodium arsenate, arsenic trioxide and arsenic pentoxide at dosages of approximately 10% has been investigated using sequential batch leaching tests. The leaching of arsenic, which was found to be diffusion based, was clearly least effective for those formulations containing additional iron(II). Calcium was found to influence the leaching of cement immobilized arsenic: those formulations containing the greatest Ca:As mole ratios were generally the most successful. Analysis using both FTIR and SEM revealed substantial changes to the cement matrices of those formulations to which the ferrous sulfate had been added. Ettringite was identified in the cement+ferrous sulfate formulations.  相似文献

Highway runoff has the potential to negatively impact receiving systems including stormwater retention ponds where highway particulate matter can accumulate following runoff events. Tire wear particles, which contain about 1% Zn by mass, make up approximately one-third of the vehicle derived particulates in highway runoff and therefore may serve as a stressor to organisms utilizing retention ponds as habitat. In this study, we focused on the potential contribution of tire debris to Zn accumulation by Rana sylvatica larvae and possible lethal or sublethal impacts resulting from exposure to weathered tire debris during development. Eggs and larvae were exposed to aged sediments (containing either ZnCl2 or tire particulate matter, both providing nominal concentrations of 1000 mg Zn kg(-1)) through metamorphosis. Water column Zn was elevated in both the ZnCl2 and tire treatments relative to the control treatment, indicating that aging allowed Zn leaching from tire debris to occur. Tissue Zn was also elevated for the ZnCl2 and tire treatments indicating that Zn in the treatments was available for uptake by the amphibians. Exposure to both ZnCl2 and tire treatments increased the time for larvae to complete metamorphosis in comparison with controls. We also observed that the longer the organisms took to complete metamorphosis, the smaller their mass at metamorphosis. Our results indicate that Zn leached from aged tire debris is bioavailable to developing R. sylvatica larvae and that exposure to tire debris amended sediments can result in measurable physiological outcomes to wood frogs that may influence population dynamics.  相似文献

The primary objective of the Detroit Exposure and Aerosol Research Study (DEARS) was to compare air pollutant concentrations measured at various neighborhoods, or exposure monitoring areas (EMAs), throughout a major metropolitan area to levels measured at a central site or community monitor. One of the EMAs was located near a busy freeway (annual average daily traffic (AADT) of ~130,000) so that impacts of mobile sources could be examined. Air pollution concentrations from the roadway-proximate sites were compared to the central site monitor. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) selected (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p- and o-xylene, 1,3 butadiene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene and 4-ethyltoluene) are typically associated with mobile sources. Gradients were also evident that demonstrated the amplification of pollutant levels near the roadway compared to the community monitor. A novel distance-to-roadway proximity metric was developed to plot the measurements and model these gradients. Effective distance represents the actual distance an air parcel travels from the middle of a roadway to a site and varies as a function of wind direction, whereas perpendicular distance is a fixed distance oriented normal to the roadway. Perpendicular distance is often used as a proxy for exposures to traffic emissions in epidemiological studies.Elevated concentrations of all the compounds were found for both a summer and winter season. Effective distance was found to be a statistically significant (p < 0.05) univariate predictor for concentrations of toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene and o-xylene for summer 2005. For each of these pollutants, effective distance yielded lower p-values than the corresponding perpendicular distance models, and model fit improved. Results demonstrate that this near-road EMA had elevated levels of traffic-related VOCs compared to the community monitor, and that effective distance was a more accurate predictor of the degree to which they were elevated as a function of distance. Effective distance produced a range of distance-to-roadway values for a single site based on wind direction, thus increasing the number and range of values that could be used to plot and predict relative differences in pollutant concentrations between two sites.  相似文献

Because of increased awareness and knowledge about their behavior, dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) are being detected at an increasing frequency at hazardous and solid waste land disposal units. Remedial systems at sites containing DNAPLs need to be designed to address the specific problems presented by DNAPLs. Because of their physical properties, DNAPLs migrate downward and are difficult to remove using conventional recovery methods. Groundwater pumping schemes can be designed to hydraulically contain this vertical migration. The purpose of this article is to present an approach for evaluating the potential to halt the vertical migration of DNAPLs using hydraulic control. Detailed groundwater flow modeling of a group of waste basins indicates that groundwater pumping in low-permeability sands can impose the upward hydraulic gradients required to stop downward DNAPL movement. However, a recovery well system located around the perimeter of the waste basins will not impose the required gradients over a sufficiently large area to effectively contain DNAPLs under the basins because the distribution of vertical gradients that could stop DNAPLs extends only about fifty to sixty feet from the wells. Additional modeling indicates that horizontal recovery wells located directly under the basins can contain the vertical migration of DNAPLs.  相似文献

Single-species listings under provisions of the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) have caused, or have been accused of causing, significant regional economic impact. In an attempt to avoid such adverse effects on regional economic development, the state of California passed the Natural Communities Conservation Planning Act (NCCP) in 1991. It is a voluntary, consensus-based approach to balancing protection of sensitive biota and biodiversity with regional economic development. The pilot NCCP program for the conservation of several threatened, endangered, and category 1 species, plus an additional 35 coastal sage scrub-related species in southern California, was completed and submitted to the public for review and comment in December 1995. This program proposes the voluntary establishment of a 86,600-ha multispecies reserve system. Once completed, participating landowners will receive ESA Section 10(a) incidental take permits for present and identified future projects. Utility rights-of-way are incorporated into the program as important connective linkages between reserve units and other adjacent important habitat areas. All data and information regarding the proposed results of the NCCP are subject to change pending agency response to public comments on the draft Habitat Conservation Plan and joint EIR/EIS.  相似文献

An input-output budget for dissolved inorganic-N in a small forested catchment in North Wales is presented. From 1982 to 1990, bulk precipitation inputs averaged 10.3 kg ha(-1) year(-1), whereas throughfall inputs in 1983-1984 were 20.3 kg ha(-1) year(-1). Streamwater outputs were consistently larger than bulk precipitation inputs, averaging 14.6 kg ha(-1) year(-1). Inorganic-N in the forest stream was predominantly nitrate and concentrations were substantially higher than in a nearby moorland stream. Both streams showed seasonal trends in nitrate concentration, with highest concentrations occurring in summer in the forest stream but in winter in the moorland stream. Nitrate concentration in the forest stream increased with increasing soil temperature up to approximately 7 degrees C and decreased at higher temperatures. Nitrification is thought to be responsible for nitrate production at temperatures both below and above 7 degrees C, but root uptake becomes significant only at the higher temperatures. In the forest, dry deposition and cloudwater inputs of inorganic-N are responsible for increased nitrogen fluxes in throughfall compared with wet deposition. Mineralization and nitrification in excess of plant needs causes the organic soil horizons to act as a net source of dissolved inorganic-N. Nitrogen transformations in the soil lead to soil acidification at a rate of 1.0 keq ha(-1) year(-1).  相似文献
