Exhaled ammonia (NH3ex) was measured by chemiluminescence in a group of healthy children (n = 20) and in two groups of asthmatic children, one (Group 1) residing in a National Park in the mountains (n = 68) and other (Group 2) in an urban area (n = 52). We also determined urinary ammonia, nitrates, urea, sodium and potassium normalized to osmolarity. Unlike exhaled nitric oxide (NOex), NH3ex was not specific to asthma as the children in Group 2 and the controls exhaled more ammonia that did the children in Group 1 (14.3 +/- 10.2 and 14.8 +/- 10.3 vs. 5.6 +/- 4.7 ppb; P < .001, respectively). In the urban environment, all children, including the healthy controls, excreted more ammonia (P < .001) and potassium (P < .001) but less urea (P < .02) than did the children residing in the National Park. These manifestations of moderate metabolic acidosis would favor excretion of ammonia at the expense of urea. In the children residing in the National Park, positive correlations were observed between NH3ex and urinary ammonia, and nitrates, age and morphological parameters. The relationship with the morphological parameters is a reflection of the normal physiological formation of NH3ex. In the children residing in the urban area, the other endogenous source of NH3ex was attributed to a slight disturbance in acid-base balance. In conclusion, the measurement of NH3ex appeared of limited interest, although the higher urinary urea/NH4+ ratio in Group 1 (P < .0001), especially in the treated children, appeared to be linked to the lack of atmospheric pollutants in the National Park. Further experimentation is in progress to confirm these findings.  相似文献

The food system’s decreasing ability to deliver food security has led to the emergence of food assistance initiatives. Food assistance is highly contested; as some argue, it is a “failure of the state”, while others regard food assistance to be an “extension of the welfare state”. Either way, research suggests that actors within food assistance are rethinking their role in the food system. In this paper, we study three food assistance initiatives, in the Netherlands, Italy and Ireland, that perform new food assistance practices while embedded in specific institutional contexts, and analyse their potential to transform the food system, drawing on Transformative Social Innovation theory. Building on transition and social innovation theory, this recently developed theory distinguishes different levels within systems, named “shades of change”, that are associated with societal transformation. By exploring these “shades” of change in the analysis, we describe aspects of the initiatives’ novel practices, and in relation to the initiative and institutional relations their motivations and expectations. We compare the three cases and discuss how food assistance practices relate to and change (or do not change) the food system. In particular, we elaborate on how these three food assistance initiatives contribute in various ways to local food and welfare system innovation. In doing so, we offer a novel perspective on food assistance initiatives. We argue that they show dynamics that have the potential for more substantial transformation towards food security over time, by building momentum through “small wins”.  相似文献

An extensive research project to investigate the radioactive properties of Cuban building materials was carried out because there is a lack of information on the radioactivity of such materials in Cuba. In the framework of this project 44 samples of commonly used raw materials and building products were collected in five Cuban provinces. The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides were determined by gamma ray spectrometry using a p-type coaxial high purity germanium detector and their mean values were in the ranges: 9-857Bqkg(-1) for (40)K; 6-57Bqkg(-1) for (226)Ra; and 1.2-22Bqkg(-1) for (232)Th. The radium equivalent activity in the 44 samples varied from 4Bqkg(-1) (wood) to 272Bqkg(-1) (brick). A high pressure ionisation chamber was used to measure the indoor absorbed dose rate in 543 dwellings and workplaces in five Cuban provinces. The average absorbed dose rates in air ranged from 43nGyh(-1) (Holguín) to 73nGyh(-1) (Camagüey) and the corresponding population-weighted annual effective dose due to external gamma radiation was estimated to be 145+/-40microSv. This value is 51% lower than the effective dose due to internal exposure from inhalation of decay products of (222)Rn and (220)Rn and it is 16% higher than the calculated value for the typical room geometry of a Cuban house.  相似文献

Adaptive processes linked to overall metabolism were studied in terms of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion in each of three self-contained krill populations along a climatic gradient. In the Danish Kattegat, krill were exposed to temperatures which ranged from 4°C to 16°C between seasons and a vertical temperature gradient of up to 10°C during summer. In the Scottish Clyde Sea, water temperatures varied less between seasons and the vertical temperature gradient in summer was only 3°C. Temperatures in the Ligurian Sea, off Nice, were relatively constant around 12-13°C throughout the year, with a thin surface layer (20-30 m) of warm water developing during summer. The trophic conditions were rich in the Kattegat and, particularly, in the Clyde, but comparatively poor in the Ligurian Sea. Oxygen consumption increased exponentially with increasing experimental temperature, which ranged from 4°C to 16°C. Overall respiration rates were between 19.9 and 89.9 µmol O2 g-1 dry wt h-1. Krill from the Kattegat, the Clyde Sea, and the Ligurian Sea all exhibited approximately the same level of oxygen consumption (30-35 µmol O2 g-1 dry wt h-1) when incubated at the ambient temperatures found in their respective environments (9°C, 5°C, and 12°C). This indicates that krill adjust their overall metabolic rates to the prevailing thermal conditions. The exception to this were the respiration rates of Ligurian krill from winter/spring, which were about twice as high as the rates from summer krill despite the fact that the thermal conditions were the same. This effect appears to result from enhanced somatic activity during a short period of increased food availability and reproduction. Accordingly, krill appears to be capable of adapting to both changing thermal and trophic conditions, especially when nutrition is a limiting factor in physiological processes.  相似文献

Summary Evidence suggests that males incur costs in producing ejaculates. Therefore some discrimination should be expected with respect to their pattern of allocating ejaculates. In a laboratory study, males of the European swallowtail butterfly Papilio machaon were mated with conspecific virgin females up to six times. The weight of the spermatophore and of the accessory substances delivered by males, the duration of mating, and the number of sperm in ejaculates were measured. The weight of the first spermatophore was related to male weight but that of accessory substances was not. The weight of the spermatophore delivered by males upon remating was always less than that of the first spermatophore. Second spermatophores Produced by males were smallest when delivered on the day after the first mating and increased asymptotically to about half the initial size with time elapsed since the first mating. Copula duration was highest for males remating on the day after the first mating but decreased to the duration of the first mating for males that were remated on the third day after the first mating or later. The weight of accessory substances delivered by males and the number of sperm in ejaculates were also higher in first matings compared to all subsequent matings. Both of two males that were handpaired on three consecutive days after the first mating produced a cumulative ejaculate mass equalling that transferred at the first mating. Thus the fact that males delivered smaller ejaculates upon remating on the third day after the first mating or later requires explanation, especially in view of the fact that copulations were not prolonged. We argue that the male ejaculate delivery strategy in mildly polyandrous species should be to mate for the first time with virgin females, when a maximum size ejaculate should be delivered, and then to maximize the number of matings. The rationale behind the male shift towards smaller ejaculate sizes delivered at subsequent matings is that: (1) the size of the ejaculate that can be produced is dependent on the time elapsed since the last mating; (2) the abundance of virgin females decreases as the flight season proceeds; and (3) there is an inverse relationship between the size and number of ejaculates that a male can produce in his life-time.  相似文献

Summary Sex pheromone communication in the nine European species of small ermine moths (Yponomeuta) is reviewed in regard to the potential role of pheromones in the speciation process. Six of the nine species studied (viz.,Y. evonymellus, Y. cagnagellus, Y. padellus, Y. irrorellus, Y. plumbellus, andY. vigintipunctatus) use a mixture of (E)-11-and (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate in different ratios as primary pheromone components, with combinations of tetradecyl acetate, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate and the corresponding alcohols of the acetates as additional pheromone components. Analysis of (Z)- to (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate ratios produced by individual females of these species demonstrated significant variation among females of all species. However, the ranges of ratios produced byY. cagnagellus, Y. irrorellus, andY. plumbellus, sharing the same host-plant species, spindle tree, did not overlap. Niche separation of all six species mentioned required consideration of at least one additional pheromone component or of temporal aspects. The remaining three species,i.e. Y. malinellus, Y. mahalebellus andY. rorellus, have pheromones that differ qualitatively.Biosynthetic routes to the pheromone components identified are proposed on the basis of fatty acid pheromone precursors found in the pheromone glands. A phylogenetic tree for the genus is constructed based on allozyme frequency data and changes in pheromone composition are superimposed on this tree. We suggest that the ancestral ermine moth pheromone is a mixture of (Z)-11- and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate and the corresponding alcohols, and a scenario of how present-day patterns evolved is outlined. The pheromone differences among the three species using spindle tree as their host-plant might have evolved throughreproductive character displacement upon secondary contact between populations that had already diverged genetically in allopatry. Pheromone differences within the so-calledpadellus-complex (includingY. cagnagellus, Y. mahalebellus, Y. malinellus, Y. padellus, andY. rorellus) in which species might have originated sympatrically, may have evolved byreinforcing selection as these species still hybridise and produce viable offspring when confined in cages. The role of pheromones in reproductive isolation amongYponomeuta species is emphasised by (1) the function of pheromone components of some of the species as behavioural antagonists to other species, (2) the cross-attraction under experimental conditions between allochronic species with similar pheromones, and (3) the formation of hybrids in the laboratory between species that are isolated in nature by pheromone differences.  相似文献

Summary. In order to elucidate the composition of the female sex pheromone of the northern (beech) winter moth, Operophtera fagata Scharf. (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), ovipositor extracts of unmated, calling females were analysed by gas chromatography with simultaneous electroantennographic and flame ionization detection (GC-EAD/FID). Male antennal responses indicated three active components, two of which had distinct matching peaks in the FID trace. Using coupled gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS), these two compounds were identified as (9Z)-nonadecene (9Z-19:Hy), and (6Z,9Z)-nonadecadiene (6Z9Z-19:Hy), respectively. The third component, present in very small amounts only, was identified as (1,3Z,6Z,9Z)-nonadecatetraene (1,3Z6Z9Z-19:Hy), known as the sex pheromone of the common winter moth, O. brumata. Field tests revealed that traps baited with 6Z9Z-19:Hy and 1,3Z6Z9Z-19:Hy caugth large numbers of male O. fagata. Both compounds were found to be essential for attraction of O. fagata. In addition, the diene prevented captures of co-occurring O. brumata. In contrast, 9Z-19:Hy neither influenced the attractiveness of the two-component mixture towards O. fagata nor contributed to bait specificity. A binary mixture of 6Z9Z-19:Hy and 1,3Z6Z9Z-19:Hy in a ratio of 10:1, applied to pieces of rubber tubing, constituted a highly attractive and species-specific bait for O. fagata, which can be used for monitoring of the flight of this defoliator pest of deciduous forests.  相似文献

Within the context of the EU Water Framework Directive (EUWFD), there is a demand for a holistic quality improvement of aquatic systems. Therefore, it is obvious that biodiversity is one of the quality components and hence has to be considered in detail. The ranking of habitats, based on biodiversity indices, depends on the specific measurement selected. It is postulated that a ranking of habitats by means of a biodiversity index may be ambiguous. Concepts to resolve this dilemma are demonstrated, and a graphical formalism is introduced which up to now has only been used in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and theoretical chemistry: The YOUNG-diagram technique.  相似文献

Main results of the second stage of the so-called "European Dioxin Emission Inventory" are presented. They cover emission testing data gained from various facilities in the EU (among these the first emission measurements reported from Portugal and Greece) and some central European countries. Further, updated dioxin emission estimates for the most important emission sources in the 17 western European countries and an evaluation of the emission time trend from 1985 to 2005 are presented. The major conclusions are, that at present, iron ore sintering is likely to be the most important emission source type followed by the former "No. 1", municipal waste incineration; measurement data from a considerable number of installations are still missing, in particular from the metal industries in Spain and Italy; there still exist an unknown number of health care waste incinerators with flue gas PCDD/F concentrations above 100 ng I-TEQ/m3 which must be considered as important local sources; in general, considerable emission reduction has been achieved with respect to the industrial emission sources, whereas emissions from non-industrial sources hardly decreased; hence, in the near future the emissions from non-industrial sources are likely to exceed those from industrial installations; the goal of 90% emission reduction set in the 5th EU Action Programme will be achieved for some source types only.  相似文献
