Measurements of pollutant gases, airborne particulate matter mass and composition, and meteorology have been made at a core site near downtown Atlanta, GA, since August 1998 in support of the Aerosol Research and Inhalation Epidemiology Study (ARIES). This site is one of eight in the Southeastern Aerosol Research and Characterization network. The measurement objective is to provide a long-term, multivariate dataset suitable for investigating statistical associations of respiratory and cardiovascular disease with airborne particulate matter composition, meteorology, and copollutant gases through epidemiologic modeling. Measurements are expected to continue through 2010. Ancillary multiyear measurements at additional sites in the Atlanta metropolitan area and in short-term exposure assessments have been used to estimate the exposure/measurement error associated with using data from a central site to approximate human exposures for the entire area. To date, 13-, 25-, and 53-month air quality datasets have been used in epidemiologic analyses. 相似文献

Accelerated sea level rise and hurricanes are increasingly influencing human coastal activities. With respect to the projected
continuation of accelerated sea level rise and global warming one must count with additional expenses for adaptation strategies
along the coasts. On the mountainous island Martinique the majority of settlements are situated along the coast almost at
sea level. But potential rises in sea level and its impacts are not addressed in coastal management, even though saltwater
intrusion and coastal erosion with increasing offshore loss of sediment are locally already a severe problem. At a sea level
rise of 50 cm, one fourth of Martinique’s coastline will be affected by erosion and one fifth of the islands surface will
have high probability to get flooded during coastal hazards. This is a growth of 5% of the impact area in comparison to present
conditions. This article analyses potential adaptation strategies and argues that the development of a coastal zone management
plan considering sea level rise and its impact area is of utmost importance. Empirical assessment models in combination with
spatial analysis are useful in obtaining statements about coastal impacts concerning sea level rise. This paper sees itself
as recommendation of action not only for Martinique.

Climate change is a multi-dimensional issue and in terms of adaptation numerous state and non-state actors are involved from
global to national and local scales. The aim of this paper is first to analyse specific institutional networks involved in
climate change predominantly at the national level in South Africa and second to determine how different stakeholders perceive
their role vis-a-vis climate change adaptation. Within the South African context there is a gap in understanding and evaluating
how institutional networks operate and thus the findings of this work may help inform and strengthen such relationships in
the future. Results showed that few institutions fully understand the implications of adaptation and their roles and responsibilities
have not yet been properly defined. Constraints relating to capacity, lack of awareness and poor information flow need to
be addressed. Climate change is perceived as an important issue although problems such as poverty reduction and job creation
remain national priorities. Most importantly this research has demonstrated how adaptation challenges the hierarchical manner
in which government works and a more collaborative approach to climate change adaptation is needed. Adaptation needs to be
mainstreamed and institutional networks need to be strengthened in order for adaptation mechanisms to be effectively implemented.

We studied two children born to a myasthenic mother. The first child, a female, had multiple flexion contractures. She died 1 h after birth. In the second pregnancy, 3 years later, ultra-sonographic examination at 20 weeks showed decreased fetal movements and multiple flexion contractures. The pregnancy was interrupted. Eight other cases of congenital rnyasthenia with arthrogryposis are known; four of them are siblings. The recurrence risk may be as high as 100 per cent. Our second case demonstrates that prenatal diagnosis is possible early enough to allow termination of pregnancy. 相似文献

Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Fe, and Zn), nutrients (NO 3 ? and NH3), fecal coliform colonies, and other multiple physical–chemical parameters were measured seasonally from 12 locations in an urban New Jersey estuary between 1994 and 2008. Stepwise regression, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis were used to group water quality results and sampling locations, as well as to assess these data’s relationship to sewage treatment effluents and the distance to the mouth of the river. The BOD5, NH3, NO 3 ? and fecal coliform counts clustered as one group and positively correlated to the distances from treated effluent and the measures of magnitude at the discharge points. Dissolved solids and most metal species scored high along a single principal component axes and were significantly correlated with the proximity to the industrialized area. From these data, one can conclude that the effluent discharge has been a main source of anthropogenic input to the Hackensack River over the past 15 years. Therefore, the greatest improvement to water quality would come from eliminating the few remaining combined sewer overflows and improving the removal of nutrients from treated effluents before they are discharged into the creeks and river. 相似文献

It has been generally accepted, during the last few decades, that the dissolved natural organic matter in water [DNOM] appearing as yellow brownish color, has become more and more "polluted" by inorganic and organic micro-pollutants. Due to the complexing properties of NOM, lipophilic organic micro-pollutants, such as, PCBs will be mobilized into water together with the DNOM. A mixture of eight PCBs, with Cl-content from tri-Cl to hepta-Cl, was added to solutions of ten different DNOMs. The DNOMs were aqua's solutions of RO-(reverse osmosis)-isolated material, having approximately the same concentration of carbon. After a contact time of three days, standard analytical PCB-method was used to determine the recovery of the added PCBs. The results show that the analytical availability of the added PCB was significantly reduced in the presence DNOM, compared to distilled water. The percentage loss in recovery of PCB increased with the content of Cl, in mean, from 3%/mg C for tri-Cl to 9%/mg C for hepta-Cl. The results also suggest that the analytical recovery of PCB was affected by the quality and the nature of the organic matter. For example the longer the DNOMs had been in the aquatic phase, the less efficient they are attached to the PCBs. 相似文献
