Regional monitoring and assessments of the health of forested ecosystems require indicators of forest conditions and environmental stresses. Indicator selections depend on objectives and the strategy for data collection and analysis. This paper recommends a set of indicators to signal changes in forest ecosystem distribution, productivity, and disturbance. Additional measurements are recommended to help ascribe those changes to climate variation, atmospheric deposition, and land use patterns. The rationale for these indicators is discussed in the context of a sequential monitoring and assessment strategy. 相似文献

This paper analyzes the benefits and costs of policies to reduce NOx emissions from electricity generation in the United States. Because emissions of NO contribute to the high concentration of atmospheric ozone in the eastern states associated with health hazards, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called on eastern states to formulate state implementation plans (SIPs) for reducing NOx emissions. Our analysis considers three NOx reduction scenarios: a summer seasonal cap in the eastern states covered by EPA's NOx SIP Call, an annual cap in the same SIP Call region, and a national annual cap. All scenarios allow for emissions trading. Although EPA's current policy is to implement a seasonal cap in the SIP Call region, this analysis indicates that an annual cap in the SIP Call region would yield about $400 million more in net benefits (benefits less costs) than would a seasonal policy, based on particulate-related health effects only. An annual cap in the SIP Call region is also the policy that is most likely to achieve benefits in excess of costs. Consideration of omissions from this accounting, including the potential benefits from reductions in ozone concentrations, strengthens the finding that an annual program offers greater net benefits than does a seasonal program. 相似文献

Generalist mammalian browsers and folivores feed on a range of chemically different plant species, which may assist them in diluting toxins and diversifying nutrient consumption. The frequency and order in which their diets are mixed are important determinants of intake. As a result, the degree of plant heterogeneity in an environment, and the spatial scale at which this occurs, should directly influence herbivore foraging decisions. We tested whether altering the Spatial scale of plants, and thus plant secondary metabolites (PSMs), affected foraging efficiency of a generalist folivore, the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). First, we demonstrated that possums were able to consume more from a mixed diet of two chemically different species, Eucalyptus globulus and E. tenuiramis, than when either of these species was offered alone. We then tested whether altering the spatial scale between E. globulus and E. tenuiramis, as small- or large-scale plant heterogeneity "patches," affected possum foraging behavior and, ultimately, their foraging efficiency. Possums increased their foraging efficiency when the spatial scale of plant heterogeneity was small rather than large. We argue that the ability to regularly switch diets, when plant spatial distribution is at a small scale, reduces the negative effects of PSM ingestion. We predict that the heterogeneity of plant patches, in relation to PSM distribution, and the scale at which this occurs across a landscape, are critical factors that influence foraging efficiency and, ultimately, fitness of mammalian herbivores. In 1990 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began sponsoring several pilot projects in its regional offices to examine
the potential benefits of adopting a multimedia approach to facility management. This approach differs from traditional practices
at EPA in that facilities (dischargers regulated under permits issued by the agency) are managed based upon their cumulative
impacts to all media: air, water, and land. Currently, facilities are managed by separate programs at EPA that evaluate environmental
impacts from a single-media perspective.
One aspect of discharger management is the necessity to allocate limited financial resources in a way that will minimize risk
to human health and the environment. A careful, risk-based prioritization of facilities is one means of providing insight
to the most effective strategy of allocating monitoring, inspection, and enforcement resources. Prioritization from a multimedia
perspective is particularly difficult, however, since it requires translation and integration of medium-specific facility
performances, management objectives, and perceptions of risk into a cumulative rating.
A computerized decision support system (DSS) designed to guide management through the prioritization process from a multimedia
perspective was identified as a potentially valuable tool for use in the pilot projects. This article describes the development
of such a prototype, outlines the features of the completed system, and discusses its potential for use at EPA. 相似文献

In species vulnerable to both inbreeding and outbreeding depression, individuals might be expected to choose mates at intermediate
levels of genetic relatedness. Previous work on the intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus has repeatedly shown that crosses between populations result in either no effect or hybrid vigor in the first generation,
and hybrid breakdown in the second generation. Previous work also shows that mating between full siblings results in inbreeding
depression. The present study again found inbreeding depression, with full sibling mating causing significant fitness declines
in two of the three populations assayed. In the mate choice assays, a single female was combined with two males. Despite the
costs of both inbreeding and outbreeding, mate choice showed clear inbreeding avoidance but no clear pattern of outbreeding
avoidance. This lack of outbreeding avoidance may be attributed either to the temporary increase in fitness in the F1 generation or to the absence of selection for premating isolation in wholly allopatric populations with infrequent migration.
If this inability to avoid unwise matings is common to other taxa, it may contribute to the problem of outbreeding depression
when allopatric populations are mixed together.

Many species are restricted to a marginal or suboptimal fraction of their historical range due to anthropogenic impacts, making it hard to interpret their ecological preferences from modern-day data alone. However, inferring past ecological states is limited by the availability of robust data and biases in historical archives, posing a challenge for policy makers . To highlight how historical records can be used to understand the ecological requirements of threatened species and inform conservation, we investigated sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) distribution in the Western Indian Ocean. We assessed differences in information content and habitat suitability predictions based on whale occurrence data from Yankee whaling logs (1792–1912) and from modern cetacean surveys (1995–2020). We built maximum entropy habitat suitability models containing static (bathymetry-derived) variables to compare models comprising historical-only and modern-only data. Using both historical and modern habitat suitability predictions we assessed marine protected area (MPA) placement by contrasting suitability in- and outside MPAs. The historical model predicted high habitat suitability in shelf and coastal regions near continents and islands, whereas the modern model predicted a less coastal distribution with high habitat suitability more restricted to areas of steep topography. The proportion of high habitat suitability inside versus outside MPAs was higher when applying the historical predictions than the modern predictions, suggesting that different marine spatial planning optimums can be reached from either data sources. Moreover, differences in relative habitat suitability predictions between eras were consistent with the historical depletion of sperm whales from coastal regions, which were easily accessed and targeted by whalers, resulting in a modern distribution limited more to steep continental margins and remote oceanic ridges. The use of historical data can provide important new insights and, through cautious interpretation, inform conservation planning and policy, for example, by identifying refugee species and regions of anticipated population recovery. 相似文献

We examined evidence for kin-related signal discrimination in the Australian scincid lizard Egernia striolata, using 41 juvenile lizards from 14 litters from a population in the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia. We characterised each juvenile at four polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci, determined genetic relatedness among pairs of juveniles, and assigned for each litter one other litter that was genetically closest and one other litter that was genetically most distant. Lizards responded significantly more strongly, with tongue flicks and time in contact, to skin secretion stimuli from more distant than genetically close, unfamiliar conspecific juveniles. When presented with an intruder, juvenile lizards basked for shorter periods when the intruder was more distantly related, and aggressive lizards directed more aggressive acts towards more distantly related than closely related conspecific intruders. We deduce from these results that there is kin recognition in juvenile E. striolata, and that they are able to discriminate related from unrelated individuals among unfamiliar conspecifics. 相似文献
