Objective: With 16 percent of the total road user fatalities, motorcyclists represent the second highest rate of road fatalities in France after car occupants. Regarding road accidents, a large proportion of trauma was on the lower cervical spine. According to different clinical studies, it is postulated that the cervical spine fragility areas are located on the upper and lower cervical spine. In motorcycle crashes, impact conditions occur on the head segment with various orientations and impact directions, leading to a combination of rotations and compression. Hence, motorcyclist vulnerability was investigated considering many impact conditions. Method: Using the human model for safety (HUMOS), a finite element model, this work aims to provide an evaluation of the cervical spine weaknesses based on an evaluation of injury mechanisms. This evaluation consisted of defining 2 injury risk factors (joint injury and bone fracture) using a design of experiment including various velocities, impact directions, and impact orientations. Results: The results confirmed previously reported clinical and epidemiological work on the fragility of the lower cervical spine and the upper cervical spine segments. Joint injuries appeared before bone fractures on both the upper and lower cervical spine. Bone fracture risk was greater on the lower cervical spine than on the upper cervical spine. The compression induced by a high impact angle was identified as an important injury severity factor. It significantly increased the injury incidence for both joint injuries and bone fractures. It also induced a shift in injury location from the lower to the upper cervical spine. The impact velocity exhibited a linear relationship with injury risks and severity. It also shifted the bone fracture risk from the lower to upper spinal segments. 相似文献

The Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (MABA) is the third mega-city in Latin America. Atmospheric N emitted in the area deposits to coastal waters of de la Plata River. This study describes the parameterizations included in DAUMOD-RD (v.3) model to evaluate concentrations of nitrogen compounds (nitrogen dioxide, gaseous nitric acid and nitrate aerosol) and their total (dry and wet) deposition to a water surface. This model is applied to area sources and CALPUFF model to point sources of NOx in the MABA. The models are run for 3 years of hourly meteorological data, with a spatial resolution of 1 km2. Mean annual deposition is 69, 728 kg-N year?1 over 2 339 km2 of river. Dry deposition contributions of N-NO2, N-HNO3 and N-NO3? to this value are 44%, 22% and 20%, respectively. Wet deposition of N-HNO3 and N-NO3? represents 3% and 11% of total annual value, respectively. This very low contribution results from the rare occurrence of rainy hours with wind blowing from the city to the river. Monthly dry deposition flux estimated for coastal waters of MABA varies between 7 and 13 kg-N km?2 month?1. These results are comparable to values reported for other coastal zones in the world. 相似文献

Salinity effects on cadmium accumulation in various tissues of the tropical fiddler crab Uca rapax 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Pollution of water and sediments by industrial discharges of heavy metals, mainly cadmium (Cd), threatens the biota of mangrove ecotones around the mouth of the Tuy river, in northern-central Venezuela. Short-term lethal Cd concentrations were determined in adult male Uca rapax collected from a clean site and kept in 75% seawater (SW). The 96-h LC50 obtained, 380 micromol (=43 mg) Cd liter(-1), is remarkably higher than values previously reported for other crustacean, mollusc or fish species. Tissue accumulation of Cd was examined in crabs acclimated to 125, 75 or 25% SW and exposed to sublethal CdCl2 levels ranging from 9.0 to 225 micromol liter(-1) (i.e. 1.0-25 mg Cd liter(-1)). The metal contents of carapace, gills, hepatopancreas, muscle and hemolymph rose pronouncedly at the highest concentration tested and particularly in the crabs treated in dilute (=25%) SW. In the latter, analyses of the relative distribution of whole-body Cd burden showed that about 80% is in the carapace, 2.4% in the gills, 4% in hepatopancreas, 3% in muscle, 9.3 in other viscerae, 1% is bound to the dried solids of hemolymph and ca. 0.2% appears to be in solution in this fluid. Exposure of crabs to Cd in dilute SW enhances the rates of entry or uptake of the metal, possibly mediated by Ca2+ transport mechanisms, and may exceed the detoxifying capacity of organs such as the hepatopancreas. Thus, Cd may be more harmful to crab populations experiencing frequent fluctuations of ambient salinity, such as are usual in mangrove swamps. 相似文献

This paper reports a comparative study of the concentration of three important environmental elements that are often found together in mineral deposits and then associated with mining activities; copper, arsenic and antimony. These elements were determined in 26 different agricultural soils from regions I, II and V in Chile, zones where the most important and biggest copper industries of this country are located. As background levels of these elements in soils have not been well established, in this study, both, impacted and non-impacted agricultural soils from different regions were considered. The relationships between the concentrations of these elements in soils were also examined. The concentration ranges for copper, arsenic and antimony were 11-530; 2.7-202 and 0.42-11 mg kg(-1) respectively. The copper concentrations in non-polluted soils from the north and central zone of Chile were similar. However, three sites from the north region have copper concentration as higher as 100 mg kg(-1), values that exceed the critical concentration for copper in soils. The concentration of arsenic and antimony in the north soils were higher than in non-impacted ones and, in the case of arsenic, greatly exceeded the world average concentration reported for this element in soils. The highest arsenic and antimony concentrations were found in Calama and Quillagua soils, two different sites in the Loa valley. The arsenic/antimony concentration ratio was higher in Quillagua soil. The high concentrations of three elements determined in impacted soils from region V (Puchuncaví and Catemu valleys) clearly shows the impact produced in this zone by the industrial and mining activities developed in their proximities. At Puchuncaví valley a clear decrease was observed in copper, arsenic and antimony concentrations in soils on the function of the distance from the industrial complex "Las Ventanas", and all concentrations exceeded the reported critical values for this matrix. Instead at Catemu valley, only the copper concentration was higher than this value. Statistically significant correlation was found for Cu-Sb in all soils; more significant Cu-As, Cu-Sb and Sb-As correlations were evaluated for soils from Puchuncaví and Catemu valleys, corroborating that high concentrations of copper, arsenic and antimony in these soils coming from the same pollution sources, the copper industry and the thermoelectric power plant. 相似文献

The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is the world's most endangered marine mammal with approximately 245 individuals remaining in 2008. This species of porpoise is endemic to the northern Gulf of California, Mexico, and historically the population has declined because of unsustainable bycatch in gillnets. An illegal gillnet fishery for an endangered fish, the totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi), has recently resurged throughout the vaquita's range. The secretive but lucrative wildlife trade with China for totoaba swim bladders has probably increased vaquita bycatch mortality by an unknown amount. Precise population monitoring by visual surveys is difficult because vaquitas are inherently hard to see and have now become so rare that sighting rates are very low. However, their echolocation clicks can be identified readily on specialized acoustic detectors. Acoustic detections on an array of 46 moored detectors indicated vaquita acoustic activity declined by 80% between 2011 and 2015 in the central part of the species’ range. Statistical models estimated an annual rate of decline of 34% (95% Bayesian credible interval –48% to –21%). Based on results from 2011 to 2014, the government of Mexico enacted and is enforcing an emergency 2‐year ban on gillnets throughout the species’ range to prevent extinction, at a cost of US$74 million to compensate fishers. Developing precise acoustic monitoring methods proved critical to exposing the severity of vaquitas’ decline and emphasizes the need for continual monitoring to effectively manage critically endangered species. 相似文献

Self-bonding boards were manufactured with treated fibers at different concentrations of a laccase enzyme. This enzyme induced
the generation of phenoxy radicals in the fiber lignin which can generate covalent bonds and cross-linked by radical–radical
coupling. The effect of laccase concentration on the properties of obtained fiberboards was evaluated. The formation of free
radicals and changes in the lignin macromolecule was measured using scavenging activity test, infrared spectroscopy, electron
paramagnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting fiberboards were
determined by differential scanning calorimetry, thermo gravimetric analysis and flexion tests. Increased thermal stability,
modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture and also, a reduction in thickness swelling and water absorption, were observed
at higher concentrations of laccase. These results are ascribed to the effect of the free radicals that were generated during
