The sirenomelia sequence with fusion, rotation, hypotrophy or atrophy of the lower limbs in combination with severe urogenital and gastrointestinal malformations is a rare and usually lethal disorder. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman, who was referred to our department because of an intraabdominal cystic structure in the 9th week of gestation. Subsequent scans confirmed the diagnosis of a sirenomelia sequence with the fusion of the lower extremities without fusion of the bones according to Stocker I classification. The size of the intraabdominal cyst decreased during follow-up. After counseling, termination of pregnancy was induced. The postmortem X-ray confirmed the ultrasound diagnosis. The exact etiological mechanism of this malformation is still unknown. An early alteration of the embryological vascular network damaging the caudal mesoderm is thought to lead to arrested development of the lower limbs and other affected organs. The cyst we saw in the 9th week might fit with this theory, either as an expression of the complex malformation of the lower abdomen or as the sonographic appearance of necrosis. Temperature activated degradation (mineralization) of 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol by Fenton's reagent 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
With the aim to evaluate the effect of temperature, 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (CMP) degradation by Fenton's reagent was investigated at 25 and 70 degrees C under the following initial conditions: [CMP]0 = 10 mM, [Fe2+]0 = 0.5 mM; ([H2O2]0/[CMP]0) = 80, pH0 = 3. The results indicated that CMP degradation was strongly influenced by temperature. In fact, the maximum TOC removal, achieved after ca. 24h, was by far greater at 70 degrees C (85%) than at 25 degrees C (36%). The same happened for organic chlorine (TOX) conversion into inorganic chloride, i.e. 100%, after 3 h at 70 degrees C, and 87%, after 27 h at 25 degrees C. As the recorded trends of CMP removal and chloride formation were basically the same, hydroxy substitution (ipso-substitution) was hypothesised as one likely mechanism of CMP degradation. The higher level of mineralization recorded at 70 degrees C was ascribed to: (i) a greater *OH concentration; (ii) a consequently greater extent of CMP oxidation to organic acids; (iii) a higher decarboxylation rate of such acids. An interesting consequence of such extended organic acids decarboxylation was a pH increase up to 8 that, in turn, caused, in the treated mixture, the decomposition of excess H2O2 as well as the precipitation of iron ions. These two latter outcomes are technologically important considering that usually, before discharging Fenton treated wastewater, specific polishing steps are required just to remove iron ions, decompose excess hydrogen peroxide and neutralise the pH. 相似文献

Solitary median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) syndrome is a complex disorder consisting of multiple, developmental defects involving midline structures of the head, which includes the cranial bones, the maxilla, and its container dentition (specifically the central incisor tooth germ), together with other midline structures of the body. SMMCI may appear as an isolated trait or in association with other midline developmental anomalies. We describe the case of a patient with SMMCI. He presented with a solitary median maxillary incisor, short stature, corpus callosum anomalies and a microform of holoprosencephaly (HPE), diabetes insipidus, and neurodevelopmental delay. The diagnosis was performed postnatally based on clinical features, radiological imaging, and a comprehensive genetic study. SMMCI can be diagnosed during the prenatal or neonatal periods or during infancy. Evaluation of the superior maxillary bone is important for prenatal diagnosis. Direct evaluation through bidimensional ultrasound or the use of multiplanar ultrasound or tridimensional reconstruction should be performed in cases of brain or face malformations. Early diagnosis can contribute to improved prenatal assessment and postnatal management. 相似文献

Environmental classification addresses issues involving the representation and analysis of continuous and variable ecological
data. This study creates a methodology to define topo-climatic landscapes (TCL) in the north-west of Catalonia, which is situated
in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. TCL provide data regarding the ecological behavior of a landscape in terms of
its topography, physiognomy, and climate, which are the main drivers of an ecosystem. The variables selected are derived from
a variety of different sources, such as remote sensing and climatic atlases. The methodology employed combines unsupervised
iterative cluster classification with supervised fuzzy classification. Twenty eight TCL, which can be differentiated in terms
of their vegetation physiognomy and vegetation altitudinal range type, were selected for the study area. Furthermore, a hierarchy
among the TCL is established which permits the merging of clusters and allows for changes in thematic resolution. By using
the topo-climatic landscape map, managers can identify patches with similar environmental conditions and at the same time

This paper discusses the design, testing and application of a new interlock system for field use with neutron generating bore hole probes at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. Such probes produce 14 MeV neutrons at a yield up to 3×108 neutrons/s, and present an ionizing radiation hazard to personnel particularly when operated in an unshielded configuration. This interlock system prevents personnel from being exposed to the relatively high radiation fields caused by an unsafe condition when an operating neutron generator probe is withdrawn from a well in the ground. An electromechanical interlock prototype system has been designed, built and tested, and has been found to be effective at preventing this event. The design is simple, is effective in mitigating the hazard, and can be installed in minutes. The system could be modified to interlock radiation-generating devices other than neutron generators that are used in similar environments. 相似文献

The brackish-water inhabiting nematode Adoncholaimus thalassophygas (De Man, 1876) may be classified as an omnivore and predator according to the gut contents of the adults. A series of 14C experiments was conducted to investigate the feeding potential of labelled microorganisms and dissolved 14C glucose. The observed consistent failure to incorporate 14C from labelled microorganisms, and its consistent success with dissolved 14C glucose suggests that dissolved organic matter may be more important than microorganisms as a food source for his nematode. This corresponds also with direct observations of living worms which showed very little uptake of particulate food other than that originating from predation. Defecation and mean gulping rates were low and, therefore, 14C glucose uptake from solution can hardly be explained by the assumption that large amounts of water are swallowed and passing through the gut. By means of mucus secretion, A. thalassophygas forms compact agglutinations of detrital sediment which are sites of enhanced microbial activity. We suggest that hatched juveniles feed primarily on dissolved organic matter released by the intensive microbial activity within this habitat. Adults retain the ability to utilize dissolved organic matter, and supplement their diet by scavenging on carcasses and occasional predation. Thus, the biology of oncholaimid nematodes may be characterized by an intimate linkage to microbial metabolism, although they do not appear to feed directly upon microorganisms. 相似文献

Mixed zooplankton were collected in June and July of 1985 and 1986 from La Jolla Bay, California, USA, and experiments were conducted to determine how selected dinoflagellates affect development and survival of nauplius larvae of Calanus pacificus. We raised nauplii from eggs on nine species of dinoflagellates at concentrations generally >300 g C l-1, and compared their development and survival to controls reared using the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii or filtered seawater. Experiments were conducted for 6 d at 17°C. Development and survival rates of the nauplii fell clearly into one of two groups, depending upon the phytoplankton used as food. The first group was characterized by high development rate (0.46 to 0.84 stage d-1), and by >27% of the original cohort surviving to at least Nauplius IV or V. The five species producing this result were Gymnodinium simplex, G. splendens, Exuviaella marie-lebourae, Gyrodinium dorsum, and T. weissflogii. The second group was characterized by a development rate similar to that in filtered seawater (0.21 to 0.34 stage d-1), and by nauplii generally failing to molt past the first feeding stage (Nauplius III), often accompanied by high mortality. The five species producing this result were Gyrodinium resplendens, Ptychodiscus brevis, Glenodinium sp., Amphidinium carterae, and Gonyaulax grindleyi. Development rate and survival were not related to cell size or cell carbon, nor to shape or texture (thecate vs athecate dinoflagellates). Poor growth could be related to the absence of some important, but unidentified, nutritional factors. Alternatively, it could be caused by the presence of plant secondary metabolites which are deleterious to growth, a factor we suspect in P. brevis in particular. Prefeeding nauplii exposed to P. brevis lost neuromuscular control prior to becoming lethargic and dying; nutritional deficiencies may not explain these effects. Methods employed in this study provide useful bioassays for detecting chemical interactions between marine plants and animals. Lethal or sublethal effects of dinoflagellates on their most likely potential predators — copepods — may partially explain why they form significant blooms. 相似文献
