The presence of PAH in breast milk collected from 32 smoking and non-smoking lactating women, residing in urban and rural areas of Tuscany (Italy) was investigated. The results indicated a significant contribution of tobacco smoke to the PAH contamination of milk: the condensate contained in the cigarettes smoked daily by each subject was strongly related with the polynuclear hydrocarbon content (R(2)=0.92, P<0.005). An experiment carried out under controlled exposure conditions to cigarette smoke allowed to demonstrate that individual metabolic activity and smoking habits affect the PAH concentration in milk samples. Mothers living in rural environments showed significantly lower PAH concentrations than those observed in urban subjects. The risk evaluation due to PAH ingestion via breast milk was assessed on the basis of the acceptable daily intake of Benzo(a)pyrene in drinking water, evidencing that a hazard cannot be excluded for heavy smokers residing in urban areas. 相似文献

The Patos Lagoon Estuary, southern Brazil, is an area of environmental interest not only because of tourism, but also because of the presence of the second major port of Brazil, with the related industrial and shipping activities. Thus, potential hydrocarbon pollution was examined in this study. Sediment samples were collected at 10 sites in the estuary, extracted, and analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS for composition and concentration of the following organic geochemical markers: normal and isoprenoid alkanes, petroleum biomarkers, linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total concentrations varied from 1.1 to 129.6 microg g(-1) for aliphatic hydrocarbons, from 17.8 to 4510.6 ng g(-1) for petroleum biomarkers, from 3.2 to 1601.9 ng g(-1) for LABs, and from 37.7 to 11,779.9 ng g(-1) for PAHs. Natural hydrocarbons were mainly derived from planktonic inputs due to a usual development of blooms in the estuary. Terrestrial plant wax compounds prevailed at sites located far from Rio Grande City and subject to stronger currents. Anthropogenic hydrocarbons are related to combustion/pyrolysis processes of fossil fuel, release of unburned oil products and domestic/industrial waste outfalls. Anthropogenic hydrocarbon inputs were more apparent at sites associated with industrial discharges (petroleum distributor and refinery), shipping activities (dry docking), and sewage outfalls (sewage). The overall concentrations of anthropogenic hydrocarbons revealed moderate to high hydrocarbon pollution in the study area. 相似文献

Joostella strains are emerging candidates for biosurfactant production. Here such ability was analyzed for Joostella strain A8 in comparison with Alcanivorax strain A53 and Pseudomonas strain A6, all previously isolated from hydrocarbon enrichment cultures made of polychaete homogenates. In pure cultures Joostella sp. A8 showed the highest stable emulsion percentage(78.33%), hydrophobicity rate(62.67%), and an optimal surface tension reduction during growth in mineral medium supplemented with diesel oil(reduction of about 12 mN/m), thus proving to be highly competitive with Alcanivorax and Pseudomonas strains. During growth in pure culture different level of biodegradation were detected for Alcanivorax strain A53(52.7%),Pseudomonas strain A6(38.2%) and Joostella strain A8(26.8%). When growing in consortia,isolates achieved similar abundance values, with the best efficiency that was observed for the Joostella-Pseudomonas co-culture. Gas-chromatographic analysis revealed an increase in the biodegradation efficiency in co-cultures(about 90%), suggesting that the contemporary action of different bacterial species could improve the process. Results were useful to compare the efficiencies of well-known biosurfactant producers(i.e. Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax representatives) with a still unknown biosurfactant producer, i.e. Joostella, and to confirm them as optimal biosurfactant-producing candidates. 相似文献

Summary Mongolian gerbils were observed over seasonal changes in day length and temperature in an outdoor enclosure containing an extensive burrow system. Animals could choose between the stable environment of their burrow and the daily and seasonal flunctuations aboveground. Surgically implanted radio transmitters provided body temperature and location of animals.Gerbils avoided temperature extremes by emerging from their burrow when ambient temperature fell below burrow temperature in hot weather and rose above burrow temperature in cold weather. They delayed emergence in the winter until several hours after sunrise and emerged before or after sunset in summer (Fig. 1).Circadian changes in core-body temperature corresponded to increases and decreases in behavioral activity. Emergence from the burrow was predictable by an increase in body temperature, as a warm-up period preceded emergence (Fig. 3).We conclude that gerbils, when subjected to extreme temperatures in the wild, probably time their activity to correspond to preferred ambient temperatures and thus shift from diurnal activity in the winter to nocrurnal activity in the summer (Fig. 2). A short-time period microbial toxicity test-battery was used for the investigation of acute toxicity and genotoxicity of five hydrocarbon containing sludges. Four sludges were obtained from a petrochemical industry and the fifth from a petroleum refinery. Some of the sludges had been stored for long periods. Bioremediation potential assays for soils polluted with each of the sludges were also considered. The sludges did not show acute toxicity in any of the microbial tests performed. However, when the diethylether soluble fractions of these sludges were analyzed some of them showed acute toxicity, for which the clearest results were obtained with the resazurin reduction method. The greatest toxicity detected with the Resazurin based method was found in the diethylether extracts of the freshly collected (not stored) sludges. On the other hand, the diethylether soluble fraction of those sludges that had been stored showed genotoxicity when analyzed with the Salmonella/microsome assay. After the incorporation of the sludges into the soil, increased bacterial counts were noted and substantial hydrocarbon elimination was achieved in 30 days, showing that bioremediation may be a possible technology for cleaning soils polluted with these sludges. 相似文献

Support to small farmers is at the heart of the fight against poverty. However, the continuous provision of support poses a major challenge which greatly affects the sustainability of development-related projects. Using a research and education approach, in which beekeeping was introduced into the curriculum of two secondary schools, we tested the potential of knowledge transfer as a means of promoting beekeeping. In this paper, we show that, with an educational program tailored to the audience needs, knowledge transfer and self-start-ups ensure better sustainability than material support. Microalgae worldwide regularly cause harmful effects, considered from the human perspective, in that they cause health problems and economic damage to fisheries and tourism. Cyanobacteria cause similar problems in freshwaters. These episodes encompass a broad range of phenomena collectively referred to as “harmful algal blooms” (HABs). For adequate management of these phenomena, monitoring of microalgae is required. However, effective monitoring is time-consuming because cell morphology as determined by light microscopy may be insufficient to give definitive species and toxin attribution. In the European Union FP7 project MIDTAL (Microarrays for the Detection of Toxic Algae), we achieved rapid species identification using rRNA genes as the target. These regions can be targeted for probe design to recognise species or even strains. We also included antibody reactions to specific toxins produced by these microalgae because, even when cell numbers are low, toxins can be present and can accumulate in the shellfish. Microarrays are the state-of-the-art technology in molecular biology for the processing of bulk samples for detection of target RNA/DNA sequences. After 36 months, we have completed RNA-cell number–signal intensity calibration curves for 18 HAB species and the analysis of monthly field samples from five locations from year 1. Results from one location, Arcachon Bay (France), are reported here and compared favourably with cell counts in most cases. In general, the microarray was more sensitive than the cell counts, and this is likely a reflection in the difference in water volume analysed with the volume filtered for the microarray an order of magnitude greater. 相似文献

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment is now a major concern given their potential adverse effects on organisms, particularly human beings. Because the feeding style and habitat of the crab Carcinus maenas make this species vulnerable to organic contaminants, it has been used previously in ecotoxicological studies. Lysosomal membrane stability (LMS) in crabs is a general indicator of cellular well-being and can be visualized by the neutral red retention (NRR) assay. LMS in crab hemolymph has been evaluated as a cellular biomarker of adverse effects produced by exposure to pharmaceutical compounds. Crabs were exposed in the laboratory to four different pharmaceuticals for 28 days in a semistatic 24-h renewal assay. Filtered seawater was spiked every 2 days with various concentrations (from 0.1 to 50 μg·L?1) of caffeine, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, and novobiocin. Results showed that NRR time, measured at day 28, was significantly reduced (p?<?0.05) after exposure to environmental concentrations of each pharmaceutical (caffeine?=?15 μg·L?1; carbamazepine?=?1 μg·L?1; ibuprofen?=?5 μg·L?1; and novobiocin?=?0.1 μg·L?1) when compared with control organisms. The predicted “no environmental effect” concentration/measured environmental concentration results showed that the selected pharmaceuticals are toxic at environmental concentrations and need further assessment. LMS monitoring in crabs is a sensitive tool for evaluating exposure to concentrations of selected drugs under laboratory conditions and provides a robust tier 1 testing approach (screening biomarker) for rapid assessment of marine pollution and environmental impact assessments for analyzing pharmaceutical contamination in aquatic environments. 相似文献

The BIODEP model in terms of atmosphere-lake interactions was developed. The model was applied to an oligotrophic, dimictic high altitude lake (Lake Redo, Pyrenees) for a range of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners. High altitude lakes, which receive their contaminant inputs uniquely from the atmosphere through long-range atmospheric transport, provide ideal controlled environments for the study of the interactions between atmospheric depositional and water column biogeochemical processes. The BIODEP model was able to predict dissolved water concentrations and PCB accumulation in the lake sediment within a factor of 2. This shows that the BIODEP model captures the essential processes driving the sink of POPs in high altitude lakes and that POP occurrence in the lake is driven by direct atmospheric inputs with limited influence from the watershed. An important seasonal variability in water column concentrations is predicted which should have important implications in sampling strategies. Furthermore, it is shown that diffusive air-water exchange dominated the PCB dynamics in the lake, especially for the less chlorinated biphenyls. 相似文献
