Phaeocystis pouchetii (Hariot) Lagerheim is widely distributed in polar waters, and forms massive near-surface blooms in the marginal ice-edge zone around Antarctica during spring and summer. UV irradiance in the Antarctic marine environment is reportedly as high in October and November as in mid-summer due to stratospheric ozone depletion. Because of the location and timing of theP. pouchetii bloom, this prymnesiophyte will be exposed to high levels of UV-B (280 to 320 nm) radiation. Colourless water-soluble compounds, produced by the colonial stage in the life cycle of this alga, absorb strongly between 250 and 370 nm, with absorbance maxima at 271 and 323 nm. The concentration of these compounds in culturedP. pouchetii depends on the strain, stage in the life cycle, and presence of bacteria. As well as conferring substantial protection to this alga, these substances may also provide UV protection to other organisms present in the water column. 相似文献

Many chemicals are released into the environment, and chemical contamination has been suggested as a contributing factor to
amphibian declines. To add to a growing body of knowledge about the impact of individual chemicals on non-target organisms,
we examined the specificity of deformities induced by exposure to four pesticides (atrazine, 2,4-dichloropheoxyacetic acid (2,4-D),
triadimefon, and glyphosate) in the model amphibian species, Xenopus laevis. We focused on the period of organ morphogenesis, as it
is frequently found to be particularly sensitive to chemical exposure yet also commonly overlooked.We found similar levels of intestine
malformations and edemas, as well as disruption of skeletal muscle, in atrazine and triadimefon exposed tadpoles. The e ects of 2,4-D
were only apparent at the highest concentrations we examined; glyphosate did not induce dramatic malformations at the concentrations
tested. While researchers have shown that it is important to understand how chemical mixtures a ect non-target organisms, our results
suggest that it is first crucial to determine how these chemicals act independently in order to be able to identify consequences of

Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) were employed to sample sediment pore water in static exposure studies under controlled laboratory conditions using (control pond and formulated) sediments fortified with 15 priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPPAHs). The sediment fortification level of 750 ng/g was selected on the basis of what might be detected in a sediment sample from a contaminated area. The sampling interval consisted of 0, 4, 7, 14, and 28 days for each study. The analytical methodologies, as well as the extraction and sample cleanup procedures used in the isolation, characterization, and quantitation of 15 PPPAHs at different fortification levels in SPMDs, water, and sediment were reported previously (Williamson, M.S. Thesis, University of Missouri-Columbia, USA; Williamson et al., Chemosphere (This issue--PII: S0045-6535(02)00394-6)) and used for this project. Average (mean) extraction recoveries for each PPPAH congener in each matrix are reported and discussed. No procedural blank extracts (controls) were found to contain any PPPAH residues above the method quantitation limit, therefore, no matrix interferences were detected. The focus of this publication is to demonstrate the ability to sequester environmental contaminants, specifically PPPAHs, from sediment pore water using SPMDs and two different types of fortified sediment. 相似文献

We argue that all aspects of demographic change, including migration, impact on the social resilience of individuals and communities, as well as on the sustainability of the underlying resource base. Social resilience is the ability to cope with and adapt to environmental and social change mediated through appropriate institutions. We investigate one aspect of the relationship between demographic change, social resilience, and sustainable development in contemporary coastal Vietnam: the effects of migration and remittances on resource-dependent communities in population source areas. We find, using longitudinal data on livelihood sources, that emigration and remittances have offsetting effects on resilience within an evolving social and political context. Emigration is occurring concurrently with, not driving, the expansion of unsustainable coastal aquaculture. Increasing economic inequality also undermines social resilience. At the same time diversification and increasing income levels are beneficial for resilience. 相似文献

The international development community is off-track from meeting targets for alleviating global malnutrition. Meanwhile, there is growing consensus across scientific disciplines that fish plays a crucial role in food and nutrition security. However, this ‘fish as food’ perspective has yet to translate into policy and development funding priorities. We argue that the traditional framing of fish as a natural resource emphasizes economic development and biodiversity conservation objectives, whereas situating fish within a food systems perspective can lead to innovative policies and investments that promote nutrition-sensitive and socially equitable capture fisheries and aquaculture. This paper highlights four pillars of research needs and policy directions toward this end. The degradation and distribution potential of atrazine, a persistent triazine herbicide, into three chemical fractions were measured in coastal aquatic sediments in the laboratory over time. Sediments with varying organic carbon contents were extracted with an organic solvent followed by an alkali hydrolysis reaction, and atrazine, deethylatrazine (DEA) and deisopropylatrazine (DIA) were quantified in the aqueous, solvent, and basic fractions using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total amount of atrazine and its metabolites recovered after 95 days varied by site and ranged from 5% to 30% in which 95% was atrazine found primarily in the solvent fraction. Sediment organic carbon was positively correlated with the distribution of atrazine into the basic fraction and the decline in the total amount recovered. No DIA was detected in laboratory spiked sediments and transformation to DEA was limited in all sediments and made up less than 1% of the mass balance. The production and persistence of DEA were inversely correlated to organic carbon; sediments with less carbon and limited binding sites had increased formation and persistence of DEA. A secondary metabolite, methylated atrazine (M-ATR) not previously documented to be derived from atrazine, was chemically produced, detected in all sediments and time points, and concentrations were an order of magnitude higher than DEA. Based on results from spiked estuarine sediments, atrazine and M-ATR may have the potential to persist in the environment while DEA and DIA may not be an ecological threat due to their limited formation. 相似文献

A combined approach of biological treatment, solids digestion and nutrient recovery was tested on dairy manure. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated in three modes, in order to optimize nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) removals. The highest average removal efficiencies of 91% for NH4-N, 59% for PO4-P and 80% for total chemical oxygen demand (COD) were achieved. Staining experiments suggested the coexistence of glycogen and phosphorus accumulating organisms. Anaerobic digestion of wasted bio-solids was able to produce a PO4-P concentration of 70 mgL-1 in the supernatant. A pilot-scale experiment, designed to recover phosphorus in the supernatant as struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate), was able to remove 82% of soluble PO4-P. 相似文献

Summary Interference competition directed at soldier beetles, Chauliognathus pennsylvanicus, by four aggressive wasp species changed the mate choice of females. In the absence of wasps, females mated more frequently with males of greater weight and greater antennal scape diameter. Only in the presence of wasps did females frequently mate when they did not contain mature ova. When wasps were abundant, the proportion of beetles mating was higher. Wasps reacted aggressively toward mating beetles less frequently than toward single beetles. Therefore, females may have fed more efficiently in the presence of wasps when coupled. 相似文献

Many questions relevant to conservation decision-making are characterized by extreme uncertainty due to lack of empirical data and complexity of the underlying ecologic processes, leading to a rapid increase in the use of structured protocols to elicit expert knowledge. Published ecologic applications often employ a modified Delphi method, where experts provide judgments anonymously and mathematical aggregation techniques are used to combine judgments. The Sheffield elicitation framework (SHELF) differs in its behavioral approach to synthesizing individual judgments into a fully specified probability distribution for an unknown quantity. We used the SHELF protocol remotely to assess extinction risk of three subterranean aquatic species that are being considered for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. We provided experts an empirical threat assessment for each known locality over a video conference and recorded judgments on the probability of population persistence over four generations with online submission forms and R-shiny apps available through the SHELF package. Despite large uncertainty for all populations, there were key differences between species’ risk of extirpation based on spatial variation in dominant threats, local land use and management practices, and species’ microhabitat. The resulting probability distributions provided decision makers with a full picture of uncertainty that was consistent with the probabilistic nature of risk assessments. Discussion among experts during SHELF's behavioral aggregation stage clearly documented dominant threats (e.g., development, timber harvest, animal agriculture, and cave visitation) and their interactions with local cave geology and species’ habitat. Our virtual implementation of the SHELF protocol demonstrated the flexibility of the approach for conservation applications operating on budgets and time lines that can limit in-person meetings of geographically dispersed experts. 相似文献
