Direct-developing intertidal Lasaea spp. occur in the North Atlantic as both continental margin and oceanic island populations. We conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis of representative populations in order to test colonization hypotheses for North Atlantic oceanic islands. Thirty individuals each were collected in 1995 and 1996 from two continental putative source populations (Florida, Iberia) and two oceanic island populations (Bermuda, Azores). They were sequenced for a 462 nucleotide portion of the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (16S) gene. No amphi-Atlantic genotypes were detected: Bermudan lineages co-clustered exclusively with Floridian congeners, and Azorean samples formed an exclusive clade with Iberian haplotypes. Our data indicate that geographical proximity to continental source populations is a better predictor of phylogenetic relationships in North Atlantic Lasaea spp. than present-day oceanic surface circulation patterns. The phylogenetic trees generated are not consistent with colonization of oceanic islands by indirect-developing ancestral lineages or by truly trans-oceanic rafting events. However, they are consistent with predicted topologies resulting from limited (≤ 2000 km), long-distance colonization by rafting (against present-day circulation patterns in the case of the Azores) and from anthropogenic introductions. Kazakhstan is an upper-middle-income country and one of the coldest countries in the world with rich energy resources and energy prices considerably lower than in developed countries. This paper presents the first comprehensive overview of household fuel use in Kazakhstan and assesses the causes and extent of energy poverty using the Households Living Conditions Survey dataset of 12,000 households. The results show that there is an overwhelming reliance on coal in Kazakhstan: 40% of all surveyed households use coal for heating, cooking and other needs. In general, liquefied petroleum gas is mainly used for cooking, coal and firewood for heating, while electricity is rarely used for heating. Energy poverty was less prevalent in oil and gas rich regions, due to low gas prices and higher income levels in those regions, while households located in the North Kazakhstan, Central and East Kazakhstan mainly suffer from lack of cleaner fuel options, income poverty, longer and colder winters and consequently energy affordability. Despite low energy prices in Kazakhstan, the results demonstrate that 28% of surveyed households spend more than 10% of their income on energy. Gas and district heating infrastructure coverage and income inequality across its regions contributed the most to energy poverty in Kazakhstan. Energy prices are regulated and indirectly subsidised. Removing energy subsidies alone may worsen energy affordability of households. Offering direct subsidies to cover part of the energy expenditures may not fully solve the problem, but subsidies, interventions for efficient technologies and fuels, dwelling energy-efficiency improvements are necessary.  相似文献

The Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata (Lamarck, 1819) was long assumed to be native to the northeastern Atlantic, however, a number of lines of evidence now indicate that it is a close relative, or identical, to the Asian Pacific oyster C. gigas (Thunberg, 1793). Three hypotheses have been proposed to explain how this strikingly disjunct geographic distribution may have come about: ancient vicariance events, recent anthropogenic introduction to Asia and recent anthropogenic introduction to Europe. We have performed a molecular phylogenetic analysis of C. angulata based on mitochondrial DNA sequence data for a 579-nucleotide fragment of cytochrome oxidase I. Our results show that Portuguese oyster haplotypes cluster robustly within a clade of Asian congeners and are closely related, but not identical, to C. gigas from Japan. The mitochondrial data are the first to show that Portuguese oysters are genetically distinct from geographically representative samples of Japanese Pacific oysters. Our phylogenetic analyses are consistent with a recent introduction of C. angulata to Europe either from a non-Japanese Asian source population or from a subsequently displaced Japanese source population. Genetic characterization of Pacific oysters throughout their Asian range is necessary to fully reveal the phylogenetic relationships among Portuguese and Pacific oysters. Amphibians are globally threatened, but not all species are affected equally by different threatening processes. This is true for the threat posed by the chytridiomycete fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). We compiled a European data set for B. dendrobatidis to analyze the trends of infection in European amphibians. The risk of infection was not randomly distributed geographically or taxonomically across Europe. Within countries with different prevalence, infection was nonrandom in certain amphibian taxa. Brown frogs of the genus Rana were unlikely to be infected, whereas frogs in the families Alytidae and Bombinatoridae were significantly more likely to be infected than predicted by chance. Frogs in the 2 families susceptible to B. dendrobatidis should form the core of attempts to develop spatial surveillance studies of chytridiomycosis in Europe. Ideally, surveys for B. dendrobatidis should be augmented by sampling the widespread genus Pelophylax because this taxon exhibits geographically inconsistent overinfection with B. dendrobatidis and surveillance of it may facilitate recognition of factors causing spatial variability of infection intensity. Several European amphibian taxa were not represented in our data set; however, surveillance of unsampled species should also occur when warranted. Abstract: Human‐made objects (e.g., buildings with glass surfaces) can reflect horizontally polarized light so strongly that they appear to aquatic insects to be bodies of water. Insects that lay eggs in water are especially attracted to such structures because these insects use horizontal polarization of light off bodies of water to find egg‐laying sites. Thus, these sources of polarized light can become ecological traps associated with reproductive failure and mortality in organisms that are attracted to them and by extension with rapid population declines or collapse. Solar panels are a new source of polarized light pollution. Using imaging polarimetry, we measured the reflection–polarization characteristics of different solar panels and in multiple‐choice experiments in the field we tested their attractiveness to mayflies, caddis flies, dolichopodids, and tabanids. At the Brewster angle, solar panels polarized reflected light almost completely (degree of polarization d ≈100%) and substantially exceeded typical polarization values for water (d ≈30–70%). Mayflies (Ephemeroptera), stoneflies (Trichoptera), dolichopodid dipterans, and tabanid flies (Tabanidae) were the most attracted to solar panels and exhibited oviposition behavior above solar panels more often than above surfaces with lower degrees of polarization (including water), but in general they avoided solar cells with nonpolarizing white borders and white grates. The highly and horizontally polarizing surfaces that had nonpolarizing, white cell borders were 10‐ to 26‐fold less attractive to insects than the same panels without white partitions. Although solar panels can act as ecological traps, fragmenting their solar‐active area does lessen their attractiveness to polarotactic insects. The design of solar panels and collectors and their placement relative to aquatic habitats will likely affect populations of aquatic insects that use polarized light as a behavioral cue.  相似文献

Air emission data from offshore oil platforms, gas and oil processing installations and contribution of marine activities at the Sonda de Campeche, located at the Gulf of Mexico, were compiled and integrated to facilitate the study of long range transport of pollutants into the region. From this important region, roughly 76% of the total Mexican oil and gas production is obtained. It was estimated that the total air emissions of all contaminants are approximately 821,000 tons per year. Hydrocarbons are the largest pollutant emissions with 277,590 tons per year, generated during flaring activities, and SOx in second place with 185,907 tons per year. Marine and aviation activities contribute with less than 2% of total emissions. Mass of pollutants emitted per barrel of petroleum produced calculated in this work, are in the range reported by similar oil companies.  相似文献

The three meiobenthic ostracod species Candona neglecta, Paracyprideis fennica and Heterocyprideis sorbyana are commonly encountered in the deep (20-40 m) soft bottoms of the Baltic proper, and may contribute more to the total meiobenthic biomass than any other group. Experimental data indicate substantial differences in their utilisation of settling phytodetritus, with C. neglecta able to exploit newly settled organic material to a larger extent than P. fennica and H. sorbyana. Ostracod species composition, as well as ostracod and sediment carbon isotope contents, were studied in the field from an area with local differences in potential food resources. The study was performed during the late period of summer blooms of the cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. Results showed that when all samples were taken together, adult C. neglecta (-22.4‰) was significantly more depleted in '13C than adult P. fennica (-21.0‰) and H. sorbyana (-20.3‰), indicating differences in food selection among the species. The flocculent sediment layer had, in all instances, lighter carbon ratios than did the lower layers. This trend was mirrored in most cases in the slight enrichment in C. neglecta compared to generally greater enrichment in the other two species. Carbon signatures of C. neglecta also varied significantly between stations, indicating that this species fed on different resources depending on location. Juvenile C. neglecta were far more depleted in '13C than adults and reflected the carbon signature of the cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. The latter is known to be the most '13C-depleted phytoplankton member in the area.  相似文献

Members of the intertidal, near-cosmopolitan mollusc genus Lasaea brood their young either to a planktotrophic veliger or crawl-away juvenile stage of development. Developmental mode can be reliably inferred from brood masses and from prodissoconch structure. I have conducted a global developmental survey of this genus based mainly on examination of hundreds of museum lots. With one exception, Lasaea species with a planktotrophic larval development were restricted to the western Pacific. Congeners that lack planktotrophic larvae were found on all continents apart from Antarctica, and also on a large number of oceanic islands. These results indicate that (1) Lasaea species releasing crawl-away juveniles have a markedly greater collective geographic range than congeners with planktotrophic larvae; (2) pelagic larvae are not necessary for long-distance dispersal in this genus; (3) rafting has played a key role in the evolutionary success of the genus Lasaea; (4) cross-fertilizing Lasaea species with feeding larvae are less successful in utilizing chance rafting events to colonize new areas than are congeners lacking these traits.  相似文献
