Teil II: Lösungsansätze für den landwirtschaftlichen Betrieb bei der Implementierung eines Umweltmanagementsystems

The registration of the present situation regarding environmental investigation is the basis for efficiently proceeding in the course of the implementation of environmental management systems (EMS). The basic analysis is found on the individual elements: reaction audit, management audit and compliance audit. Via an optimal performance of an environmental investigation while implementing an EMS, the basis for a maximum utilization has been created for the user as well for agriculture. Utilization for the company is provided by documentation of the organizational structure showing a transparency of procedures with regard to efficiency. Furthermore, an EMS is useful in the course of external tasks, e.g. public approach, business partners, position to authorities, deregulation or minimization of liability.

Although problems may occur in the implementation of environmental management systems (EMS) in agriculture, an EMS can be a suitable farm management tool. In the past, pilot projects have revealed that the environmental audit as a base analysis still contains methodical weak points. A uniform procedure for the implementation process is not possible due to variations in the structure of farms in Germany with respect to size, employee structure and capital resources. While the resource costs which occur on larger farms can lead to a benefit due to increased efficiency, this has not yet been established for smaller farms. In these cases, other measures such as the implementation of generic management systems (especially environment and quality) or a farm-specific implementation of a management system without the cost-intensive certification may be a possible alternative.     

Prenatal diagnosis of partial agenesis of the corpus callosum in a fetus with thanatophoric dysplasia type 2

A fetus with thanatophoric dysplasia type 2 (TD2) associated with cloverleaf skull and abnormal development of the corpus callosum is reported. This case represents the first prenatal direct visualization of a partial agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) using high-resolution ultrasonography and colour power Doppler, which was confirmed by post-mortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The causal link between cloverleaf skull in TD and partial ACC is discussed. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Phosphine in various matrixes

Matrix-bound phosphine was determined in the Jiaozhou Bay coastal sediment,in prawn-pond bottom soil,in the eutrophic lake Wulongtan,in the sewage sludge and in paddy soil as well.Results showed that matrix-bound phosphine levels in freshwater and coastal sediment,as well as in sewage sludge,are significantly higher than that in paddy soil.The correlation between matrix bound phosphine concentrations and organic phosphorus contents in sediment samples is disecussed.     

Safety Studies on Hydraulic Proportional Valves With Electrical Position Feedback

The authors analysed a proportional valve with electrical position feedback for its failure behaviour. Severalfailures were introduced into the feedback loop, especially into the 2 solenoids and the inductive positiontransducer. The behaviour of the valve for square and ramp reference signals was recorded and systematicallyanalysed. It was shown that failures could be detected by monitoring the residual signal from the equipmentunder control or the residual signal from the sensor. It was possible to achieve the safe position within twice thenormal response time of the valve by switching off the current of both solenoids. The application of these resultsfor a new generation of safe proportional valves is discussed. The use of the results of these investigationsobviates the need for redundancy of the electrical position monitoring arrangement in a safe proportionalvalve.     

Sympatric size variants of the microcopepod Oncaea venusta exhibit distinct lineages in DNA sequences

We investigated the phylogenetic relationships among different size groups of the pelagic microcopepod Oncaea venusta Philippi, 1843, by comparing the patterns of genetic variation of specimens collected at five locations of the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic analyses were based on sequence data obtained from two DNA markers: A 310 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene and a 480 bp fragment of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1). The cyt b sequences showed a much higher level of variation than those from ITS1, but the conclusion from both genes was concordant. Four genetic clades could be differentiated. A small- and a large-size group were unambiguously assigned to two distinct clades or lineages. Unexpectedly, the medium-sized individuals could be divided into another two different genetic clades. All four lineages were supported by high bootstrap values. The high levels of sequence divergence under sympatric conditions indicated that at least the two main groups, the large and the small one, may be assigned to different species. For the medium-size group additional morphological studies and more sensitive nuclear markers are required to clarify their taxonomic status.     

Determination of cytotoxicity of nephrotoxins on murine and human kidney cell lines

The present study investigates renal inner medullary collecting duct (mIMCD3) cells and human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) for evaluation of cytotoxicity of nephrotoxic compounds. The 24 h LC(50) values for cisplatin, paraquat and ibuprofen in mIMCD3 cells were 135, 155 and 3600 microM, respectively. The 24 h LC(50) values for paraquat and ibuprofen in HEK293 cells were 180 and 1000 microM, respectively. Effects of hyperosmolality on cytotoxicity of paraquat were additive in mIMCD3 cells. These data demonstrate that renal hyperosmolality has an additive effect on cytoxicity of paraquat.     

International research into occupational safety and health protection.

As a mosaic of answers to these questions, this article explores international research on priorities in occupational research and analyses these against the backdrop of the nearly 1,000 research projects conducted by 9 institutions from 8 countries in the year 2003.
