Identifying which nonindigenous species will become invasive and forecasting the damage they will cause is difficult and presents a significant problem for natural resource management. Often, the data or resources necessary for ecological risk assessment are incomplete or absent, leaving environmental decision makers ill equipped to effectively manage valuable natural resources. Structured expert judgment (SEJ) is a mathematical and performance‐based method of eliciting, weighting, and aggregating expert judgments. In contrast to other methods of eliciting and aggregating expert judgments (where, for example, equal weights may be assigned to experts), SEJ weights each expert on the basis of his or her statistical accuracy and informativeness through performance measurement on a set of calibration variables. We used SEJ to forecast impacts of nonindigenous Asian carp (Hypophthalmichthys spp.) in Lake Erie, where it is believed not to be established. Experts quantified Asian carp biomass, production, and consumption and their impact on 4 fish species if Asian carp were to become established. According to experts, in Lake Erie Asian carp have the potential to achieve biomass levels that are similar to the sum of biomasses for several fishes that are harvested commercially or recreationally. However, the impact of Asian carp on the biomass of these fishes was estimated by experts to be small, relative to long term average biomasses, with little uncertainty. Impacts of Asian carp in tributaries and on recreational activities, water quality, or other species were not addressed. SEJ can be used to quantify key uncertainties of invasion biology and also provide a decision‐support tool when the necessary information for natural resource management and policy is not available. Landscape‐scale alterations that accompany urbanization may negatively affect the population structure of wildlife species such as freshwater turtles. Changes to nesting sites and higher mortality rates due to vehicular collisions and increased predator populations may particularly affect immature turtles and mature female turtles. We hypothesized that the proportions of adult female and immature turtles in a population will negatively correlate with landscape urbanization. As a collaborative effort of the Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN), we sampled freshwater turtle populations in 11 states across the central and eastern United States. Contrary to expectations, we found a significant positive relationship between proportions of mature female painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and urbanization. We did not detect a relationship between urbanization and proportions of immature turtles. Urbanization may alter the thermal environment of nesting sites such that more females are produced as urbanization increases. Our approach of creating a collaborative network of scientists and students at undergraduate institutions proved valuable in terms of testing our hypothesis over a large spatial scale while also allowing students to gain hands‐on experience in conservation science. 相似文献

The mobility of the rice pesticides thiobencarb (S-[(4-chlorophenyl) methyl] diethylcarbamothioate) and fipronil ([5-amino-3-cyano-1-[2,6-dichloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-[(trifluoromethyl)sulfinyl]pyrazole) were investigated in the glasshouse under flooded conditions using two Australian rice-growing soils. When using leakage rates of 10 mm day?1, less than 20% of applied thiobencarb and fipronil remained in the water column after 10 days due to rapid transfer to the soil phase. Up to 70% and 65% of the applied thiobencarb and fipronil, respectively, were recovered from the 0–1 cm layer of soils. Only 5–7% of each pesticide was recovered from the 1–2 cm layer, and less than 2% was recovered from each 1 cm layer in the 2–10 cm region of the soils. Analysis of the water leaking from the base of the soil cores showed between 5–10% of the applied thiobencarb and between 10–20% of the applied fipronil leaching from the soil cores. The high levels of pesticide in the effluent was attributed to preferential flow of pesticide-laden water via soil macropores resulting from the wetting and drying process, worm holes and root channels. 相似文献

The impact of oxygen diffusion from plant roots on the soil redox in the root zone in flooded rice bays was investigated using two Australian rice growing soils. The rates of production of Fe(II) and Mn(II) in pore water resulting from the reduction of soil minerals was used to gauge the extent of development of anaerobic conditions and the time taken for equilibrium to establish. Soil concentrations of readily reducible Fe were 13–28 times greater than Mn, making Fe a more reliable indicator of redox conditions than Mn. In addition, Mn(II) concentrations reached equilibrium far more rapidly than Fe, which made the identification of any contribution to soil redox by oxygen diffusing from rice plant roots difficult to observe. Dissection of soil cores showed that more than 80% of the rice root mass occurred in the top 4 cm of soil, suggesting that any contribution roots may make to the redox potential of the flooded soils would occur in this region. However, studies conducted indicated that the diffusion of oxygen from the surface floodwater into soil pore water in the 2.5 cm layer of soil was so substantial that it would mask any contribution made by rice plant roots to the overall soil redox in this root zone. 相似文献

Greenhouse gas emissions and soil indicators four years after manure and compost applications 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Understanding how carbon, nitrogen, and key soil attributes affect gas emissions from soil is crucial for alleviating their undesirable residual effects that can linger for years after termination of manure and compost applications. This study was conducted to evaluate the emission of soil CO2, N2O, and CH4 and soil C and N indicators four years after manure and compost application had stopped. Experimental plots were treated with annual synthetic N fertilizer (FRT), annual and biennial manure (MN1 and MN2, respectively), and compost (CP1 and CP2, respectively) from 1992 to 1995 based on removal of 151 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) by continuous corn (Zea mays L.). The control (CTL) plots received no input. After 1995, only the FRT plots received N fertilizer in the spring of 1999. In 1999, the emissions of CO2 were similar between control and other treatments. The average annual carbon input in the CTL and FRT plots were similar to soil CO2-C emission (4.4 and 5.1 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1), respectively). Manure and compost resulted in positive C and N balances in the soil four years after application. Fluxes of CH4-C and N2O-N were nearly zero, which indicated that the residual effects of manure and compost four years after application had no negative influence on soil C and N storage and global warming. Residual effects of compost and manure resulted in 20 to 40% higher soil microbial biomass C, 42 to 74% higher potentially mineralizable N, and 0.5 unit higher pH compared with the FRT treatment. Residual effects of manure and compost on CO2, N20, and CH4 emissions were minimal and their benefits on soil C and N indicators were more favorable than that of N fertilizer. 相似文献

Three doses (15-30-45 kg plant(-1)) of the compost prepared from the clone of Dwarf cavendish banana were compared with farmyard manure (50 kg plant(-1)), mineral fertilizers (180 g N+ 150 g P +335 g K plant(-1)) and farmyard manure+ mineral fertilizers (25 kg FM+ 180 g N+ 150 g P +335 g K plant(-1)) which determined positive effects on the growth, yield and fruit quality characteristics of banana plants. The banana plants were grown under a heated glasshouse and in a soil with physical and chemical properties are suitable for banana growing. The contents of N, P, K and Mg in compost and in farmyard manure were found to be similar. Farmyard manure, farmyard manure + mineral fertilizers and 45 kg plant(-1) of compost increased growth, yield and fruit quality characteristics. According to obtained results, 45 kg plant(-1) of compost was determined more suitable in terms of economical production and organic farming than the other fertilizer types. 相似文献

Accumulation of soluble salts resulting from fertilizer N may affect microbial production of N(2)O and CO(2) in soils. This study was conducted to determine the effects of electrical conductivity (EC) and water content on N(2)O and CO(2) production in five soils under intensive cropping. Surface soils from maize fields were washed, repacked and brought to 60% or 90% water-filled pore space (WFPS). Salt mixtures were added to achieve an initial in situ soil EC of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 dS m(-1). The soil cores were incubated at 25 degrees C for 10 d. Average CO(2) production decreased with increasing EC at both soil water contents, indicating a general reduction in microbial respiration with increasing EC. Average cumulative N(2)O production at 60% WFPS decreased from 2.0 mg N(2)O-N m(-2) at an initial EC of 0.5 dS m(-1) to 0.86 mg N(2)O-N m(-2) at 2.0 dS m(-1). At 90% WFPS, N(2)O production was 2 to 40 times greater than that at 60% WFPS and maximum N(2)O losses occurred at the highest EC level of 2.0 dS m(-1). Differences in the magnitude of gas emissions at varying WFPS were due to available substrate N and the predominance of nitrification under aerobic conditions (60% WFPS) and denitrification when oxygen was limited (90% WFPS). Differences in gas emissions at varying soil EC may be due to changes in mechanisms of adjustment to salt stress and ion toxicities by microbial communities. Direct effects of EC on microbial respiration and N(2)O emissions need to be accounted for in ecosystems models for predicting soil greenhouse gas emissions. 相似文献
