Continuous data of vertical-profile salinity were analyzed for four stations located successively upriver in a macrotidal estuary, the lower St. Johns River (Northeast Florida, USA). The data analysis confirmed well-mixed salinity conditions in the river with at most 1.3 ppt of vertical variability at Dames Point (river km 20), where the main variations of salinity are along the longitudinal axis of the river. Given the well-mixed salinity conditions and dominant horizontal structure of salinity variations in the river, we present and apply a barotropic, two-dimensional modeling approach for hydrodynamic-salinity transport simulation in the lower St. Johns River. When properly forced by offshore surge, high-resolution wind fields and freshwater river inflows, the model replicated the salinity measurements remarkably well, including the separation into tidal and sub-tidal components. The data and model results show that, at times, offshore winds and surge can be more influential on longitudinal salinity variations than local winds over the river. We demonstrate the importance of using proper boundary conditions to force the model relative to the minimal sensitivity of the model to parameter adjustment of horizontal mixing and uncertainty-based perturbation of wind and inflow forcings. 相似文献

Northern and Spotted Wolffishes (Anarhichas denticulatus and A. minor) are demersal marine fishes listed as “threatened” in Canadian waters. Both species have unusually large benthic eggs and
large size at hatch, which should reduce passive dispersal. We examined population differentiation with microsatellite and
AFLP loci across the ranges of both species in the North Atlantic Ocean. Although significant population structure was documented,
differentiation was less than expected based on knowledge of life history characteristics. Significant differentiation was
found in Northern Wolffish between the Barents Sea and other samples based on both microsatellite and AFLP data. In contrast,
population structure in the Spotted Wolffish was notably weaker, particularly with microsatellites. Both species were characterized
by low genetic diversity for marine fishes and had significantly lower genetic diversity than the congeneric Atlantic Wolffish.
This finding was consistent with the conservation status of these three species and suggests potential vulnerability to over-exploitation
in Northern and Spotted Wolffishes. 相似文献

Shrimp trawling is common throughout the southeastern and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the USA and is the primary contributor
to fisheries discards in these regions. Tens of thousands of nearshore seabirds nest near shrimp trawling grounds in the USA,
but to date, there has been no assessment of the relationship between seabirds and shrimp trawlers. We examined the taxonomic
composition of bycatch, rate at which seabirds scavenged bycatch, and energy density of discarded bycatch in a nearshore commercial
shrimp fishery. Bycatch was primarily comprised of demersal fish that are not typically accessible to the plunge-diving and
surface-feeding seabirds that occur in the area. Hence, seabird diets in the region appear to be broadened taxonomically by
the availability of discards. Results from discard experiments indicated that 70% of the nearly 5,500 items discarded by hand
were scavenged by seabirds and that the fate of a discarded item was most strongly predicted by its taxonomic order. Laughing
gulls scavenged the greatest proportion of discards, although brown pelicans were the only species to scavenge more discards
than predicted based upon their abundance. Because this is the first such study in the region, it is difficult to ascertain
the extent or intensity of the impact that discards have on nearshore seabirds. Nonetheless, our results suggest that it will
be difficult for managers to clearly understand fluctuations in local seabird population dynamics without first understanding
the extent to which these species rely upon discards. This may be especially problematic in situations where seabird populations
are recovering following natural or anthropogenic stressors. 相似文献

Anthropogenic activities contaminate many lands and underground waters with dangerous materials. Although polluted soils occupy small parts of the land, the risk they pose to plants, animals, humans, and groundwater is too high. Remediation technologies have been used for many years in order to mitigate pollution or remove pollutants from soils. However, there are some deficiencies in the remediation in complex site conditions such as low permeability and complex composition of some clays or heterogeneous subsurface conditions. Electrokinetic is an effective method in which electrodes are embedded in polluted soil, usually vertically but in some cases horizontally, and a low direct current voltage gradient is applied between the electrodes. The electric gradient initiates movement of contaminants by electromigration (charged chemical movement), electro-osmosis (movement of fluid), electrolysis (chemical reactions due to the electric field), and diffusion. However, sites that are contaminated with heavy metals or mixed contaminants (e.g. a combination of organic compounds with heavy metals and/or radionuclides) are difficult to remediate. There is no technology that can achieve the best results, but combining electrokinetic with other remediation methods, such as bioremediation and geosynthetics, promises to be the most effective method so far. Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant present in the human body. Coenzyme Q10 has an essential role in various biochemical reactions. The deficiency of coenzyme Q10 in the body leads to disorders including neurological degeneration, ageing and cancer. Clinical trials have tested coenzyme Q10 as a drug or a dietary supplement. However, the major pharmaceutical issue of coenzyme Q10 delivery is its high molecular weight and poor water solubility. This limitation leads to its poor oral bioavailability. Several methods have been designed to overcome the poor water solubility of coenzyme Q10, such as size reduction and ionization. This article presents nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems for coenzyme Q10 with special emphasis on pharmacokinetic perspectives and clinical relevance. Systems include nanoparticles, solid dispersions, liposomes, nanoemulsions, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems, nanostructured lipid carriers, cyclodextrins and nanocapsules. 相似文献

Fish feeding behavior results from successful coordination of the fins, jaws, and sensory systems, and the organization of
this behavior may affect the fish’s foraging abilities and trophic ecology. Using quantitative kinematic methods, movements
of the jaws, fins and eyes of Tautoga onitis (Teleostei: Labridae) were analyzed during feeding events. Tautog feeding events consisted of three phases: approach, strike,
and recovery, each defined by a combination of kinematic events. The approach was characterized by changes in fin movements
and in body position, with the eyes directed forward at the food item. The strike began with the onset of jaw opening and
protrusion, then cranial elevation, with the eyes no longer looking at the food item. The end of the strike and the beginning
of the recovery involved a braking maneuver with the pectoral fins; the fish turns and swims away from the original food location
item after prey capture. The coordination performance variables of tautog were quantitatively compared to published data from
closely related cheiline wrasses and parrotfishes, which represent different feeding ecologies within a monophyletic assemblage.
Fishes feeding on molluscs and benthic invertebrates (Cheilinus fasciatus and Tautoga onitis) represented an intermediate coordination condition, with herbivores (the parrotfishes, Scarus quoyi and Sparisoma radians) at one extreme, and fishes feeding on elusive prey (Epibulus insidiator and Oxycheilinus digrammus) at the other extreme. The analysis suggests that the biomechanical demands of coordination for feeding on benthic invertebrates
may represent a generalized, and perhaps ancestral behavior in the wrasses, whereas more specialized trophic niches have evolved
divergent, more specialized demands. Examining the movement and coordination of the jaws, fins, and eyes during fish feeding
provides a detailed mechanistic basis for behavior, and comparison of coordination patterns during feeding among different
taxa can measure how these trophic strategies differ. Understanding the evolution of feeding ecologies in these demersal fishes
may have implications for understanding their role within their shallow water reef community. 相似文献

The Neotropical seven-spined gobies (tribe Gobiosomatini), including the Gobiosoma and Microgobius groups, constitute a speciose,
monophyletic gobiid taxon. In particular, member species of the Gobiosoma group exhibit a combination of behavioral diversification
and microhabitat specialization that may have played a major role in their collective rapid evolution and high rate of speciation.
Functional hermaphroditism, which is common among gobiids, can promote exploitation of patchily distributed micro-niches by
countering potential reductions in reproductive opportunities. However, the possible role of functional hermaphroditism in
the exploitation of microhabitats and rapid speciation in the Gobiosoma group is unknown. One member species, Tigrigobius multifasciatus, is a functional hermaphrodite. Two other Gobiosoma group species are functionally gonochoric (i.e., constant-sexed), but
exhibit transient hermaphroditic ovarian structure among immatures. In this study, ovarian morphology among immature and adult
females of several Gobiosoma group species was examined to see if hermaphroditic gonadal features are present. Although no
evidence of functional hermaphroditism in the form of precursive accessory gonadal structures (pAGS) associated with the adult
ovary was found among newly examined species, all species exhibited the transient expression of hermaphroditic gonadal features
associated with the immature ovary. In contrast, among six species of non-Gobiosomatini genera having no record of hermaphroditism,
none exhibited similar transient hermaphroditic features associated with the immature ovary. These findings suggest that hermaphroditism
may have been an ancestral trait which has been secondarily lost within some Gobiosoma group species. This study also shows
that ontogenetic and morphogenic processes within the gobiid reproductive system may provide new insights into the evolution
of life history traits and significantly further our understanding of the extraordinary evolutionary success of this group. 相似文献

Classical sampling methods often miss important components of coral reef biodiversity, notably organisms that remain sheltered
within the coral matrix. Recent studies using sea kraits (sea snakes) as bio-indicators suggest that the guild of predators
represented by anguilliform fish (Congridae, Muraenidae, Ophichthidae, henceforth “eels” for simplicity) were far more abundant
and diverse than previously suspected. In the current study, eel diversity (similarity and species richness indices) estimated
via sea snake sampling (SSS) was compared among six areas of one of the main oceanic biodiversity hotspot of the Pacific Ocean
(southwest lagoon of New Caledonia). Based on the eel diversity in the snakes’ diet, the results obtained in six areas, in
two snake species, and using different estimates (ANOSIM, Shannon index…) were consistent, suggesting that SSS provided robust
information. Analyses also suggested subtle, albeit significant, differences in the eel assemblages among islets. Such spatial
differences are discussed in light of local management practices. As SSS is easy to use, cost-effective, and provides the
best picture of eel assemblages to date, it can be employed to monitor the eel assemblages in addition to the snakes themselves
in many areas of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, thereby providing an index of the top predator biodiversity of many coral reefs. 相似文献

We review a range of lack-of-fit tests suitable for assessing the appropriateness of the mean function in dose-response models.
The review encompasses both well-known tests and new tests based on recent developments in statistics, which we have extended
to the dose-response case. We argue that the classical methods are inadequate in certain situations, where the new tests may
be applied. Power comparisons are carried out by means of extensive simulation studies, covering both designs with and without
replicates at small and large sample sizes. Three datasets from dose-response applications illustrate differences and similarities
between the tests. The results suggest that the new tests perform better and exhibit a wider applicability. 相似文献
