25 food samples, 5 mother’s milk specimens, 4 dust samples, and 16 textiles were analysed for phthalic acid esters. Phthalic acid esters were detected in all samples, with di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) being the most abundant phthalates. Raw milk samples revealed average concentrations of total phthalate of 0.1 mg/kg. Retail milk did not contain higher loads than raw milk, even storing samples until their “best-before” date did not result in elevated levels. Skimmed milk was less contaminated than whole milk. The higher concentrations of DEHP and total phthalates in cream samples are due to their higher fat content. With concentrations up to 1.54 mg/kg, ground hazelnuts, almonds, and nutmeg in plastic packagings showed relatively high levels. In infant food, only traces of DEHP and DBP could be found while other phthalic acid esters were not detectable. The mother’s milk samples also exhibited only low amounts of approx. 0.1 mg/kg, thus indicating that there is no accumulation of phthalate esters in the human body. Extraordinarily high concentrations were found in dust samples; with the levels ranging from 300 to 5370 mg/kg and DEHP being the major compound. This leads to the conclusion that the air path must play a considerable role in the transfer of phthalic acid esters. As dust contains considerable amounts of textile fibres, textiles were also included in the investigation. The phthalic ester levels in the textile samples ranged from 3.42 to 34.44 mg/kg. As large carnivores recover throughout Europe, their distribution needs to be studied to determine their conservation status and assess the potential for human-carnivore conflicts. However, efficient monitoring of many large carnivore species is challenging due to their rarity, elusive behavior, and large home ranges. Their monitoring can include opportunistic sightings from citizens in addition to designed surveys. Two types of detection errors may occur in such monitoring schemes: false negatives and false positives. False-negative detections can be accounted for in species distribution models (SDMs) that deal with imperfect detection. False-positive detections, due to species misidentification, have rarely been accounted for in SDMs. Generally, researchers use ad hoc data-filtering methods to discard ambiguous observations prior to analysis. These practices may discard valuable ecological information on the distribution of a species. We investigated the costs and benefits of including data types that may include false positives rather than discarding them for SDMs of large carnivores. We used a dynamic occupancy model that simultaneously accounts for false negatives and positives to jointly analyze data that included both unambiguous detections and ambiguous detections. We used simulations to compare the performances of our model with a model fitted on unambiguous data only. We tested the 2 models in 4 scenarios in which parameters that control false-positive detections and true detections varied. We applied our model to data from the monitoring of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in the European Alps. The addition of ambiguous detections increased the precision of parameter estimates. For the Eurasian lynx, incorporating ambiguous detections produced more precise estimates of the ecological parameters and revealed additional occupied sites in areas where the species is likely expanding. Overall, we found that ambiguous data should be considered when studying the distribution of large carnivores through the use of dynamic occupancy models that account for misidentification. 相似文献

Landscape‐scale alterations that accompany urbanization may negatively affect the population structure of wildlife species such as freshwater turtles. Changes to nesting sites and higher mortality rates due to vehicular collisions and increased predator populations may particularly affect immature turtles and mature female turtles. We hypothesized that the proportions of adult female and immature turtles in a population will negatively correlate with landscape urbanization. As a collaborative effort of the Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN), we sampled freshwater turtle populations in 11 states across the central and eastern United States. Contrary to expectations, we found a significant positive relationship between proportions of mature female painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and urbanization. We did not detect a relationship between urbanization and proportions of immature turtles. Urbanization may alter the thermal environment of nesting sites such that more females are produced as urbanization increases. Our approach of creating a collaborative network of scientists and students at undergraduate institutions proved valuable in terms of testing our hypothesis over a large spatial scale while also allowing students to gain hands‐on experience in conservation science. 相似文献

Goal and Scope
Organochlorine pollutants such as some pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) are highly persistent compounds in the environment. As synthetic, man-made products they are not encountered in natural ecosystems. Due to their high lipid solubility these compounds can accumulate in animals and humans, where they may exert chronically toxic and carcinogenic effects or disrupt endocrine functions and/or interfere with reproduction. Sound environmental stewardship demands continuous monitoring of such substances, assessment of their ecotoxicological risk, and reduction of excessive risk by setting appropriate standards.Methods
The analysis of birds’ eggs is one method for the detection of organochlorine pollutants in ecosystems. In the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg eggs of some bird species, especially Peregrine falcons, have been collected and analysed for selected persistent organic pollutants [total DDT (dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane), HCB (hexachlorobenzene), HCEP (heptachloroepoxide), HCH (hexachlorocyclohexane), PCBs] since the 1970s. Long-term continuous investigations yield data concerning temporal changes and regional differences in the pollution of the bio-indicators.Results and Conclusion
Dioxin-like PCBs and total DDT were the most prominent pollutants. The Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) was the most polluted bird species within the project. During the 1970s and 1980s all of the mentioned substances showed an encouraging decrease, undoubtedly because their use was banned in Germany. Analyses for PCDD/F in a small number of Peregrine falcon eggs from the period of 2000 to 2003 revealed the high level of pollution of these samples with dioxin toxicity equivalents (WHO-TEQ) from PCB and PCDD/F, which in all eggs reached the no observed effect level (NOEL) determined in osprey chicks and surpassed this threshold fivefold in the most polluted one.. Because of their great variability the pollutant concentrations in the eggs were difficult to interprete in some cases. Based on the results for the Peregrine falcon eggs of the years 2001 to 2003 a statement concerning the regional distribution of DDT and PCBs in Baden-Wuerttemberg could be made and depicted on the map. Because of their high lipid content, birds’ eggs are generally well suited as bio-indicators for the accumulation of persistent and lipophilic compounds.Recommendations and Perspective
In spite of the significant decline of the organochlorine concentrations in the eggs of the birds investigated, the present situation is still alarming. Too many of the analytical data continue to exceed the respective national and EU-wide limit values for food and feed, and in the case of dioxin equivalents even lie above the assumed action threshold in the indicator organism. The yeast Trichosporon mucoides and the filamentous fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus as biphenyl oxidizing organisms are able to oxidize chlorinated biphenyl derivatives. Initial oxidation of derivatives chlorinated at C4 position started at the non-halogenated ring and went on up to ring cleavage. The products formed were mono- and dihydroxylated 4-chlorobiphenyls, muconic acid derivatives 2-hydroxy-4-(4-chlorophenyl)-muconic acid and 2-hydroxy-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-muconic acid as well as the corresponding lactones 4-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid and 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid. Altogether T. mucoides formed 12 products and P. lilacinus accumulated five products. Whereas the rate of the first oxidation step at 4-chlorobiphenyl seems to be diminished by the decreased bioavailability of the compound, no considerable differences were observed between the degradation of 4-chloro-4'-hydroxybiphenyl and 4-hydroxybiphenyl. Twofold chlorinated biphenyl derivatives did not serve as substrates for oxidation by either organism with the exception of 2,2'-dichlorobiphenyl, transformed by the yeast Trichosporon mucoides to two monohydroxylated derivatives. The results show, that soil fungi may contribute to the aerobic degradation of low chlorinated biphenyls accumulating from anaerobic dehalogenation of PCB by bacteria. 相似文献

This paper examines the possibilities of developing agri-environmental policy measures in Israel, focusing on market-oriented
instruments. A conceptual framework for developing agri-environmental policy measures is presented, first in very broad lines
(mandatory regulations, economic instruments and advisory measures) and subsequently focusing on economic instruments, and
specifically, on market-oriented ones. Two criteria of choice between the measures are suggested: their contribution to improving
the effectiveness of the policy; and the feasibility of their implementation. This is the framework used for analyzing agri-environmental
measures in Israel. Israel currently implements a mix of mandatory regulations, economic instruments and advisory measures
to promote the agri-environment. The use of additional economic instruments may improve the effectiveness of the policy. When
comparing the effectiveness of various economic measures, we found that the feasibility of implementation of market-oriented
instruments is greater, due to the Israeli public’s preference for strengthening market orientation in the agricultural sector.
Four market-oriented instruments were practiced in a pilot project conducted in an Israeli rural area. We found that in this
case study, the institutional feasibility and acceptance by stakeholders were the major parameters influencing the implementation
of the market-oriented instruments, whereas the instruments’ contribution to enhancing the ecological or economic effectiveness
were hardly considered by the stakeholders as arguments in favor of their use. 相似文献
