Urban ecological studies, including focus on cities, suburbs, and exurbs, while having deep roots in the early to mid 20th century, have burgeoned in the last several decades. We use the state factor approach to highlight the role of important aspects of climate, substrate, organisms, relief, and time in differentiating urban from non-urban areas, and for determining heterogeneity within spatially extensive metropolitan areas. In addition to reviewing key findings relevant to each state factor, we note the emergence of tentative "urban syndromes" concerning soils, streams, wildlife and plants, and homogenization of certain ecosystem functions, such as soil organic carbon dynamics. We note the utility of the ecosystem approach, the human ecosystem framework, and watersheds as integrative tools to tie information about multiple state factors together. The organismal component of urban complexes includes the social organization of the human population, and we review key modes by which human populations within urban areas are differentiated, and how such differentiation affects environmentally relevant actions. Emerging syntheses in land change science and ecological urban design are also summarized. The multifaceted frameworks and the growing urban knowledge base do however identify some pressing research needs. 相似文献

In polygynous species, males devote considerable effort to reproduction during the rut. Both the number of females in the
mating group and the ratio of sexually mature males to sexually mature females [adult sex ratio (ASR)] are expected to affect
the amount of effort a male devotes to reproductive activities. We predicted the reproductive effort of dominant male reindeer,
measured as relative mass loss, proportions of active reproductive behaviors, and frequencies of agonistic behaviors would
(1) increase with an increasing number of females in the mating group and eventually level off, and (2) exhibit a dome shape
with respect to ASR in the mating group. We tested these predictions using 12 years of data collected from semi-domesticated
reindeer in northern Finland. We found a positive relationship between relative mass loss and the mean number of females in
the mating group for mature, but not young males. The relationship between the proportion of active reproductive behaviors
performed by mature males and the mean number of females in the group was quadratic while agonistic behaviors of mature males
increased with the increasing female group size. We also found that active reproductive behaviors decreased with a rising
mating group ASR for mature males; whereas, young males performed more agonistic behaviors as group ASR increased. Our results
point to age-specific patterns of mass loss and activity during the mating season. They also indicate that both the number
of females and ASR in the mating group are important factors in determining the level of reproductive effort of dominant male

Pollution is a common stress in the marine environment and one of today's most powerful agents of selection, yet we have little understanding of how anthropogenic toxicants influence mechanisms of adaptation in marine populations. Due to their life history strategies, marine invertebrates are unable to avoid stress and must adapt to variable environments. We examined the genetic basis of pollution resistance across multiple environments using the marine invertebrate, Styela plicata. Gametes were crossed in a quantitative genetic breeding design to enable partitioning of additive genetic variance across a concentration gradient of a common marine pollutant, copper. Hatching success was scored as a measure of stress resistance in copper concentrations of 0, 75, 150, and 350 microg/L. There was a significant genotype x environment interaction in hatching success across copper concentrations. Further analysis using factor analytic modeling confirmed a significant dimension of across-environment genetic variation where the genetic basis of resistance to stress in the first three environments differed from that in the environment of highest copper concentration. A second genetic dimension further differentiated between the genetic basis of resistance to low and high stress environments. These results suggest that marine organisms use different genetic mechanisms to adapt to different levels of pollution and that the level of genetic variation to adapt to intense pollution stresses may be limited. 相似文献

This paper analyzes existing cost-sharing rules for wastewater pollution grants administered by the Environmental Protection Agency under the 1972 Amendments to the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. It identifies and measures biases in the existing cost-sharing rules that encourage nonfederal interests to select particular techniques (e.g., capital-intensive techniques) over others even when the selected techniques are not the least costly to the nation. The paper develops theoretically a cost-sharing condition—that the same percentage cost share be applied to all abatement techniques—that would eliminate the cost-sharing bias. There is a need to support applied, community-relevant hydrologic research within changing climate, population, and socioeconomic conditions to better inform water policy and management. We hypothesized that providing a rural agricultural community in a semiarid valley with the necessary monitoring tool to meet local water management needs would increase adaptive capacity within the context of long-term drought. Through a community science approach, researchers installed a telemetry monitoring system at participating acequia irrigation diversions that remotely sent water data to a web interface every 15 min. Two surveys distributed before and after web interface access targeted seven adaptive capacity indicators. After the first season of improved data accessibility, the following adaptive capacity indicators significantly increased: information diversity, cognitive social capital, leadership, and proactivity. Rather than focusing on the water savings aspect of real-time monitoring, this paper summarizes a novel water resources study that assessed the social impact of real-time irrigation water delivery monitoring on adaptive capacity. This study suggests that bridging the gap between community need and hydrologic research through community science, sociologic analysis, and stakeholder engagement provides significant benefits for communities facing water management challenges, further supporting problem-driven water resources research. 相似文献

Previous studies of interference competition have shown an asymmetric effect on intake rate of foragers on clumped resources,
with only subordinate individuals suffering. However, the food distributions in these studies were uniform or highly clumped,
whereas in many field situations, food aggregation is intermediate. Here we investigated whether food distribution (i.e.,
uniform, slightly clumped, and highly clumped) affects the behavioral response of mallards foraging alone or competing with
another. Although the amount of food was the same in all distributions, the mallards reached higher intake rates, visited
fewer patches, and showed longer average feeding times in the highly clumped distribution. Competing mallards had lower intake
rates on the slightly clumped than on the uniform or highly clumped food distributions. Subordinates generally visited more
patches and had shorter feeding times per patch, but their intake rates were not significantly lower than those of dominants.
Therefore, we propose that subordinates do not necessarily suffer from interference competition in terms of intake rate, but
do suffer higher search costs. In addition, although dominants had significantly higher average feeding times on the best
quality patches of the highly clumped food distribution, such an effect was not found in the slightly clumped distribution.
These findings indicate that in environments where food is aggregated to a lesser extent, monopolization is not the best strategy
for dominants. Our results suggest that interference experiments should use food distributions that resemble the natural situation

Copepod nauplii are important in plankton food web dynamics, but limited information is available about their ecology due to methodological challenges. Reported here is a new molecular method that was developed, optimized, and tested in laboratory and field samples that uses quantitative PCR (qPCR) to identify and estimate the abundance of nauplii of the planktonic copepod, Parvocalanus crassirostris. The overall approach included collection of bulk zooplankton samples in the field, size fractionation to create artificial cohorts of relatively few developmental stages, obtaining DNA copy number for each size fraction by qPCR amplification of a target gene region, and estimation of the number of animals in each fraction through application of known DNA copy number across developmental stage. Method validation studies found that our qPCR-based approach has comparable accuracy to microscope-based counts of early developmental stages. Naupliar abundance estimates obtained using the two methods on cultured populations were similar; the regression of qPCR estimates on microscope-based counts resulted in a nearly 1:1 ratio (slope = 1.09). The qPCR-based method is superior to traditional identification and quantification methods for nauplii due to its higher taxonomic resolution, sensitive detection over a range of DNA quantities, and relatively high throughput sample processing. 相似文献

Complexometric equilibrations were performed with six chelating reagents to mobilise Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn from a contaminated urban soil. The metal-laden aqueous extract was treated with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DEDTC) to precipitate the heavy metals from solution while liberating the chelating reagent. The aqueous supernatant fraction was then re-combined with the soil particulates to extract more pollutants. A sparing quantity of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid; 10 mmol) mobilised 32-54% of the 5 mmol of heavy metals from the soil with three cycles but only 0.1 and 1.0% of the iron and magnesium, respectively, was removed. Whereas DPTA (1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid) and citric acid also mobilised each of the heavy metals to some extent and continued to extract these metals during all three cycles, the DTPA (diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid), although efficient initially, could not be recycled with these conditions. ADA [N-(2-acetamido)iminodiacetate] and SCMC [(S)-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine] were selective for copper and zinc but mobilised only Cu when recycled. An alternate means of regenerating the chelating reagent involved treatment of the aqueous extract with magnesium (Mg0) granules. Excess HEDC [bis(2-hydroxyethyl)dithiocarbamate] mobilised appreciable quantities (19-57%) of heavy metals from the soil and retained its complexing activity when recycled. An appreciable fraction of the mobilised Pb and Cu and a portion of the Zn were cemented to the surfaces of the excess magnesium whereas virtually all of the Fe and Mn was removed from solution as insoluble hydroxides. 相似文献
