Forest declines in Europe and the northeastern United States are widely believed to be associated with deposition of air pollutants, perhaps including nitric acid vapor. The experiments presented here, which were conducted in indoor chambers, involved measurement of steady-state rates of nitric acid deposition on foliage of seedlings of eastern white pine. Nitric acid concentrations ranged from 37 to 1260 ppb, but were mostly in the 130-180 ppb range. Between 130 and 180 ppb, much of the deposited nitric acid could be removed by washing leaf surfaces with water. Amounts of nitrate removed by washing increased with exposure duration to a maximum of 7.6 nmol cm(-2) after about 8 h. Although nitrate concentrations in the washings remained constant after 8 h, nitric acid deposition nonetheless continued at a steady-state rate. We have termed this steady-state deposition 'trans-cuticular' on the assumption that the nitric acid diffuses through the cuticle. Resistance to trans-cuticular uptake (69 m(2) s mol(-1)) far exceeded resistance to diffusion across the unstirred layer at the surface of the leaf (5 m(2) s mol(-1)). High concentrations used in these experiments preclude quantitative extrapolation to ambient conditions; however, we have demonstrated that the white pine cuticle is both a major storage pool and a major barrier to uptake of deposited nitric acid.  相似文献

White pine, Norway spruce and red spruce seedlings were exposed to nitric acid vapor concentrations of 10 to 120 ppb in constant stirred tank reactors. Nitric acid dry deposition rates were determined from both the change in nitric acid concentration in the reactor flow stream and from the amount of nitrogen recovered from the seedlings. Nitric acid labeled with 15N was used to distinguish dry-deposited nitrogen in the plant from the nitrogen that was already present. It was found that dry deposition occurs via three routes: surface deposition, trans-cuticular deposition, and stomatal deposition. Resistance to surface deposition is very low (< 4.8 m2-s mol(-1)) for a freshly washed surface, but increases as the surface adsorption sites are occupied. Resistance to trans-cuticular uptake averaged 206 m2-s mol(-1). Stomatal resistance can be calculated from the rate of water diffusion out of the plant. Eighty per cent of the nitric acid deposited via the trans-cuticular and stomatal routes was assimilated by the plant. However, none of the nitric acid deposited on the surface was assimilated. In rural areas with coniferous forests, the combination of low ambient nitric acid concentrations and low initial surface resistance means that most nitric acid will be dry deposited on the tree surface, and thus will not be directly assimilated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Most of us are aware, or feel we are aware, of the impacts of major water resources projects on our lives. “Dam-lovers” note the life-saving flood-risk reduction and recreational benefits of a proposed reservoir, while “dam-haters” bemoan the future drowning out of the wildlife habitat of its river valley, and the recreational disbenefits to stream (as opposed to lake) fishermen. Water supply projects can often be given such a revered status, assuming the “obvious” tenet that water, air, food, and shelter are basic requirements of decent living, that the economic viability of the project may not even be assessed. Water resources planners are supposed to impartially weigh the environmental and economic benefits, and especially now, the energy implications of all proposed water projects, but many times the partial views of political or public advocates may be hard to ignore. The assumptions used in the planning of four recent water projects in the Province of Alberta will be presented and some revisions suggested which materially affect their Benefit/Cost ratios. In one project that is still in the public hearing stage, the economic analysis will be revealed, indicating that the original B/C ratio of about 1.6:1 might be more realistically placed at 0.6:1. In another project just completed, the apparent lack of an economic or energy analysis that has resulted in a perpetual and unnecessary energy load on the province, will be described.  相似文献

The effect of surfactant alkyl chain length on soil Cd desorption was studied using nonionic surfactants of polyethylene oxide (PEO) of PEO chain lengths of 7.5 (Triton X-114), 9.5 (Triton X-100), 30 (Triton X-305), or 40 units (Triton X-405) in combination with the I- ligand. Triplicate 1 g soil samples were equilibrated with 15 ml of surfactant-ligand mixture, at concentrations of 0.025, 0.50 or 0.10, and 0.0, 0.168 or 0.336 mol/l, respectively. After shaking the samples for 24 h, the supernatant fraction was analyzed for Cd content to determine the percent of Cd desorbed from the soil. After five successive washings, 53%, 40% and 25% of Cd had been desorbed by 0.025, 0.050 or 0.10 mol/l of Triton X-114, respectively, in the presence of 0.336 mol/l of I-, whereas with the same conditions, Triton X-100 desorbed 61%, 57% and 56% Cd and either Triton X-305 or Triton X-405 desorbed 51, 40 and 14 to 16% Cd. The most efficient Cd desorption was obtained using 0.025 mol/l Triton X-100 in admixture with 0.336 mol/l I-. Increased surfactant concentration was detrimental to Cd desorption consistent with a process that blocked ligand access to the soil particle surface. After 5 washings,the cumulative cadmium desorption decreased with increasing surfactant alkyl chain length, indicating that the metal-ligand complexes are preferably stabilized by the micelles' hydrophobic octyl phenyl (OP) group rather than by the hydrophilic PEO group. In the absence of ligand, the surfactants alone desorbed less than 1% Cd from the contaminated soil, suggesting that the ligand, rather than the surfactant, extracts the metal, to be subsequently stabilized within the surfactant micelles.  相似文献

Aboveground net primary production (ANPP) and belowground gross primary production (BGPP) of all vegetation were measured in eight young, paired plots on a north and south aspect in western Montana. Stands of high and low overstory tree leaf area index (LAI) were compared. BGPP increased with ANPP, though they were not directly proportional. ANPP ranged from 1550 to 4400 kg C ha(-1) year(-1) and BGPP ranged from 1360 to 3500 kg C ha(-1) year(-1). ANPP and BGPP were both significantly related to LAI and aspect, where both were greater on the north aspect at any given LAI. Litterfall represented the largest share of ANPP; increases in overstory biomass represented the next largest share. Soil CO2 flux was higher on the north aspect. We conclude that growth differences were not simply a matter of re-allocating carbon between root production and ANPP. Rather, both production and allocation were different among the sites.  相似文献

Mussels,Mytilus edulis, are known to have a high degree of variability in their whole soft tissue zinc concentrations which cannot be explained by any known ecological or physiological factor. In the present study, 70 individual mussels collected from an uncontaminated site at Bellevue, Newfoundland, in Spring 1987 had kidney zinc concentrations ranging from 148 to 4 907 g g-1 dry weight while 40 mussel exposed to 25 g l-1 zinc for 18 d had kidney zinc concentrations ranging from 144 to 14 072 g g-1. Pooled or individual kidneys were homogenized in 50 mM ammonium bicarbonate buffer (pH 8.0) and ultracentrifuged for 1 h at 105 000 g. On average, about 70% of the total kidney zinc load was found in the 105 000 g pellet. Cytosolic zinc was separated into two peaks on a column of Sephadex G-25. The first peak coincided with the void volume of the column representing molecules with molecular weights of at least 5 000 (exclusion limits of Sephadex G-25). This peak would include any metallothionein present since mussel metallothionein has a molecular weight of 10 000 to 20 000. Little variability was observed in this peak so it was concluded that zinc-thionein did not play a major role in the genesis of the inherent variability. The second peak represented zinc complexed to an unknown substance with an approximate molecular weight of 700 to 1 300. This very low molecular weight zinc showed an extremely high degree of inherent variability and a strong positive correlation with the whole kidney zinc concentration. It is concluded that this very low molecular weight zinc complex plays a major role with regard to kidney zinc variability. Some very low molecular weight zinc was also noted in the digestive gland and gills. The starfish Cosmasterias lurida was sampled from the pier piles of Almirante Storni in the Golfo Nuevo, northern Patagonia, from November 2001 to November 2003. In this anthropogenically modified site there is an unusually abundant food supply of mussels and large aggregations of starfishes. The reproductive cycle was studied by organ indices and histological examination of gonads. The highest gonad index (GI) values were found in the summer (February–March), followed by a drop in GI values, indicating spawning. Histological analyses indicated that gametogenesis takes place from June to January, sexual maturity occurred during the summer and spawning occurred in April. The GI and pyloric caeca index (PCI) tended to have an inverse relationship, but this was only statistically significant in males. However, biochemical analyses of the starfish indicated no transfer of nutrients between pyloric caeca and gonads in either sex. In fact, simultaneous accumulation of carbohydrates was found in the pyloric caeca and gonads of both sexes.  相似文献

Equilibrations were performed with complexing reagent(s) to mobilise Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn from a contaminated urban soil. The metal-laden aqueous extract was treated with zero-valent magnesium (Mg0) or bimetallic mixture (Pd0/Mg0 or Ag0/Mg0) to precipitate the heavy metals from solution while liberating the chelating reagent(s). Post precipitation, the pH of aqueous supernatant fraction was readjusted to approximately 5 and the solution was re-combined with the soil particulates to extract more heavy metal pollutants. A sparing quantity of EDTA (10 mmoles) mobilised 32-54% of the 5 mmoles of heavy-metals from the soil with three cycles but only 0.1% of the iron was removed. Three successive extractions with a mixture of complexing reagents (3 mmoles), 1:1 EDTA plus HEDC [bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-dithiocarbamate], mobilised approximately 49% of the Pb, approximately 18% of the Zn and approximately 19% of the Mn burden but only 7% of the Cu, and 1% of the Fe from this soil. An appreciable fraction of the mobilised Pb and Cu and a portion of the Zn was cemented to the surfaces of the excess magnesium whereas virtually all of the Fe and Mn was removed from solution as insoluble hydroxides.  相似文献

Federal land managers in the western United States are interested in the potential of prescribed fire as a tool to decrease fuel loads, increase vegetational heterogeneity, and increase faunal diversity in various ecosystems. I tested whether implementation of a prescribed fire program by the US Forest Service in a watershed in the central Great Basin had significant effects on butterfly species richness and composition. I monitored butterfly communities during the first two years after implementation in five to seven burn units and controls in the watershed. To estimate baseline spatial and temporal variation in butterfly communities in the greater ecosystem, I also monitored butterflies in five untreated canyons outside the project area. Butterfly species richness and butterfly species composition (measured as community similarity) did not differ significantly between burn units and controls. Geographic location had statistically significant effects on species richness. Butterfly species composition of individual locations varied over time, as did the magnitude of that variation. These results emphasize that standardized, repeatable monitoring protocols are vital for evaluating the effects of experimental management treatments and for predicting and assessing the effects of future management strategies and environmental changes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The long-term effects of presently used and alternatively proposed water pricing policies were studied using some tools of operations research and economics. A discrete deterministic dynamic programming model was structured and operated to determine the optimal water supply capacity expansion paths for a hypothetical residential community with a given water pricing policy. The objective of the model was the maximization of future discounted consumers'surpluses plus producer's revenues net of the long-run cost of supply. State variables were the size of system capacity in MGD and stage variables were the times of feasible capacity increase in years. Demand curves, population sizes, and growth rates for various economic sectors of the community were assumed known, as well as short-run production and capital construction costs. Several policies, including constant unit rates, decreasing or increasing block rates and summer differential rates were tested. It was concluded that price plays a major role in the short-run allocation and long-run planning and conservation of water supplies. Conservational pricing policies were advocated as means of lowering the long-run cost of water, using the water price-demand function as a planning tool. Further research in these areas was recommended.  相似文献
