Gravity currents in two-layer stratified media 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
An analytical, experimental and numerical study of boundary gravity currents propagating through a two-layer stratified ambient of finite vertical extent is presented. Gravity currents are supposed to originate from a lock-release apparatus; the (heavy) gravity current fluid is assumed to span the entire channel depth, H, at the initial instant. Our theoretical discussion considers slumping, supercritical gravity currents, i.e. those that generate an interfacial disturbance whose speed of propagation matches the front speed, and follows from the classical analysis of Benjamin (J Fluid Mech 31:209?C248, 1968). In contrast to previous investigations, we argue that the interfacial disturbance must be parameterized so that its amplitude can be straightforwardly determined from the ambient layer depths. Our parameterization is based on sensible physical arguments; its accuracy is confirmed by comparison against experimental and numerical data. More generally, measured front speeds show positive agreement with analogue model predictions, which remain strictly single-valued. From experimental and numerical observations of supercritical gravity currents, it is noted that this front speed is essentially independent of the interfacial thickness, ??, even in the limiting case where ?? = H so that the environment is comprised of a uniformly stratified ambient with no readily discernible upper or lower ambient layer. Conversely, when the gravity current is subcritical, there is a mild increase of front speed with ??. Our experiments also consider the horizontal distance, X, at which the front begins to decelerate. The variation of X with the interface thickness and the depths and densities of the ambient layers is discussed. For subcritical gravity currents, X may be as small as three lock lengths whereas with supercritical gravity currents, the gravity current may travel long distances at constant speed, particularly as the lower layer depth diminishes. 相似文献

We compare calculated greenhouse gas emissions for a North American beef feedlot operation, which includes biogas production by anaerobic digestion with subsequent electricity generation (the AD case), to the emissions for a “business as usual” case, which includes both a feedlot and an equivalent amount of grid-generated electricity. Anaerobic digestion, biogas production and electricity production are the major sources of differences in emissions. Fertilizer production, crop production, manure collection and spreading, as well as the associated transport stages are also considered within the LCA system boundaries; impacts on life cycle emissions from these sources are lower. Running a feedlot and producing electricity using typical grid power plants produces 3,845 kg CO2?eq/MWh while running a feedlot, which generates biogas to produce electricity, produces 2,965 kg CO2?eq/MWh. This savings of 880 kg CO2?eq/MWh arises because the net power generation in the AD case emits about 90% less life cycle GHG emissions compared to grid-average electricity. The high overall emission levels arise due to emissions associated with enteric fermentation in beef cattle as the main source of GHG emissions in both the “business as usual” and the AD cases. Radical chemistry in the nocturnal urban boundary layer is dominated by the nitrate radical, NO3, which oxidizes hydrocarbons and, through the aerosol uptake of N2O5, indirectly influences the nitrogen budget. The impact of NO3 chemistry on polluted atmospheres and urban air quality is, however, not well understood, due to a lack of observations and the strong impact of vertical stability of the boundary layer, which makes nocturnal chemistry highly altitude dependent.Here we present long-path DOAS observations of the vertical distribution of the key nocturnal species O3, NO2, and NO3 during the TRAMP experiment in Summer 2006 in Houston, TX. Our observations confirm the altitude dependence of nocturnal chemistry, which is reflected in the concentration profiles of all trace gases at night. In contrast to other study locations, NO3 chemistry in Houston is dominated by industrial emissions of alkenes, in particular of isoprene, isobutene, and sporadically 1,3-butadiene, which are responsible for more than 70% of the nocturnal NO3 loss. The nocturnally averaged loss of NOx in the lowest 300 m of the Houston atmosphere is ~0.9 ppb h?1, with little day-to-day variability. A comparison with the daytime NOx loss shows that NO3 chemistry is responsible for 16–50% of the NOx loss in a 24-h period in the lowest 300 m of the atmosphere. The importance of the NO3 + isoprene/1,3-butadiene reactions implies the efficient formation of organic nitrates and secondary organic aerosol at night in Houston. 相似文献

This study, for the first time, investigates and quantifies the influence of slight changes in solution pH and ionic strength (IS) on colloidal microsphere deposition site coverage by Suwannee River Humic Acid (SRHA) in a column matrix packed with saturated iron-oxide coated sand.Triple pulse experimental (TPE) results show adsorbed SRHA enhances microsphere mobility more at higher pH and lower IS and covers more sites than at higher IS and lower pH. Random sequential adsorption (RSA) modelling of experimental data suggests 1 μg of adsorbed SRHA occupied 9.28 ± 0.03 × 109 sites at pH7.6 and IS of 1.6 mMol but covered 2.75 ± 0.2 × 109 sites at pH6.3 and IS of 20 mMol. Experimental responses are suspected to arise from molecular conformation changes whereby SRHA extends more at higher pH and lower ionic strength but is more compact at lower pH and higher IS. Results suggest effects of pH and IS on regulating SRHA conformation were additive. 相似文献

The rate of growth ofPhaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin with L-lysine as sole nitrogen source is about half that with ammonium or nitrate, and only one of the two nitrogen atoms in the lysine molecule appears to be used for growth. The organism cannot grow heterotrophically with lysine as carbon source. The rate of lysine metabolism is slow and most of that utilized is incorporated into protein, this process being faster in light than in darkness. The dark incorporation of lysine-carbon into protein is stimulated by addition of ammonium, whereas incorporation in light is unaffected. Arginine-carbon is also mainly incorporated into protein. Light has little effect on this incorporation, and addition of ammonium decreases it both in light and darkness. There is no appreciable conversion of the carbon of either amino acid to carbon dioxide. Although, under anaerobiosis, lysine is taken up and accumulated, negligible metabolism of lysine occurs. 相似文献

Since the initial development of the Ecological Footprint in the early 1990s, the concept has gained increased interest amongst academics and practitioners internationally. In the UK, it is estimated that some 60 to 70 Ecological Footprint studies were undertaken between 1999 and 2004. Although the majority of interest in Ecological Footprinting has come from local government, a recent study has found that government officers involved in the formulation of council policy have not been able to engage with the Ecological Footprint as a process or use the results to inform policy decisions. This paper analyses how an Ecological Footprint has been developed for Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The approach used to construct an Ecological Footprint for Cardiff has been significantly different to that which had been used previously in the UK, as it has involved a unique consortium of researchers at Cardiff University and policy development officers at Cardiff Council checking the quality of data used in the Footprint calculation, and developing a range of policy scenarios. 相似文献
