The toxicity of receiving waters was evaluated by means of the young tadpoles assays. The sentinel organism was Bufo arenarum, an indigenous anuran species. The assayed water samples were taken from a highly polluted urban watercourse (Reconquista River, Buenos Aires, Argentina), characterized by high concentration of nitrites, phosphates and heavy metals. The toxicity of water samples was assessed performing the pass-fail test and by means of the NOEC and LC(50); TUs (toxic units) were also calculated. The effect of the addition of a positive control (Cd) on the toxicity of the river water samples was also examined. Water samples of three sites, characterised by their different degree of pollution, were assayed. The lethal response had a clear cut correspondence with the water quality of the sample evaluated by means of physicochemical parameters. In most cases, the dilution of the samples resulted in a significant reduction of their toxicity to TU values compatible to those stated by the USEPA for industrial effluents. It was concluded that (a) the used Bufo arenarum bioassay was an adequate method for assessing the toxicity of natural polluted water samples and (b) the three considered endpoints showed no important differences after 48 or 96 h of exposure, therefore we concluded that it may not be necessary to extend the assay for a longer period than 48 h.  相似文献

A general methodology is established that permits the characterization and evaluation of the optimum potential of biogas extraction at each vertical well in the sanitary landfill of Asturias, Spain. Twenty wells were chosen from a total of 225 for the study, and the maximum production flow of biogas, which is a result of the degradation of the municipal solid waste deposited within its area of influence, was determined for each well. It was found that this flow varied with time and is characteristic of each extraction well. The maximum extractable flow also was determined as a function of the composition of the biogas needed for its subsequent utilization. The biogas extraction yield in the wells under study varied between approximately 26 and 97%, with a mean recovery value of 82%. The low yields found in certain cases were generally caused by a sealing defect, which leads to excessive incorporation of air into the landfill gas through the surrounding soil or through the extraction shaft, and which make its subsequent utilization difficult.  相似文献

Guayule is a shrub native to Mexico growing in semiarid lands, that may be incorporated into the semiarid region production system as a complement for annual crops. The possibility to develop this natural resource as a sustainable industrial source of natural rubber, may improve the socio-economical level of people living at the guayule region and favor the agricultural development near the US-Mexico border. Despite the existence of natural stands in Mexico with guayule plants of different rubber content, a program envisaging selection of plants with high rubber synthesis potential joined to agronomic management practices are required. This could achieve the rubber yield needed to guarantee a constant supply of raw material for an industrial processing plant. This paper reviews R&D work carried out in Mexico for the last 25 years, including genetic aspects and evaluation of guayule response to environmental and agronomic factors. Relevant results showed plants with up to 21% rubber content and the existence of diploid plants, which could facilitate future plant breeding programs.  相似文献

A number of models have been proposed to calculate overpressure and impulse from accidental industrial explosions. When the blast is produced by explosives, pyrotechnics or unstable substances, the TNT equivalent model is widely used. From the curves given by this model, data are fitted to obtain equations showing the relationship between overpressure, impulse and distance. These equations, referred to here as characteristic curves, can be fitted by means of power equations, which depend on the TNT equivalent mass. Characteristic curves allow determination of overpressure and impulse at each distance.  相似文献

Modified pressurised hot water is used for the development of a high pressure liquid-liquid extraction method for the decontamination of used industrial oils from inorganic non-metal species (chlorine, fluorine and sulphur). The oils were subjected to dynamic extraction with water modified with 5% v/v HNO3 at 200 degrees C as extractant. Under these working conditions the analytes were transferred to the aqueous phase. Spontaneous separation of the two immiscible liquid phases (the used oil and extract) takes place in the collection flask after extraction. The treated and untreated oil samples were oxidised and the chloride, fluoride and sulphate thus formed were determined by ion-chromatography. The method was applied to four oil samples from different locations in Spain. A residence time of approximately =10 min provided oil samples from which 88.3%, 89.4% and 89.4% of chloride, fluoride and sulphate, respectively, have been removed with respect to the initial concentration of each analyte in the oil. The repeatability, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), was of 11.9%, 13.7% and 7.2% for Cl(-), F(-) and SO4(2-), respectively; whilst the within-laboratory reproducibility yielded RSDs of 6.2%, 7.9% and 6.2% for the same analytes. The proposed approach has proved to be efficient, simple, easily transferable to industrial scale, cheap, fast and environmentally friendly.  相似文献

The kinetics and mechanism of the Riboflavin (Rf)-promoted photochemical degradation with visible light of the herbicide Norflurazon (NF) has been studied by time-resolved and stationary techniques. Using light of wavelength higher than 400 nm--a region where NF is totally transparent--and with concentrations of Rf and NF of ca. 0.02 and 1 mM, respectively, only the excited triplet state of Rf ((3)Rf*) is quenched by NF, in competition with dissolved ground state triplet oxygen, O(2)((3)Sigma(g)(-)). NF degradation mainly occurs by reaction with superoxide radical anion O(2)(-) formed through two electron transfer steps: from NF to (3)Rf*, yielding Rf radical anion, and from this anion to O(2)((3)Sigma(g)(-)), regenerating ground state Rf. Although singlet molecular oxygen is also produced, NF only quenches this oxidative species in a physical mode. The global result is the photoprotection of the sensitiser and the photodegradation of NF.  相似文献

Distributions of Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn and Pb were analyzed in a sediment core collected in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, an important fisheries region located in the South Pacific of Mexico, where data on metal accumulation and accretion rates were previously almost nonexistent. Depth profiles of metal concentrations were converted to time-based profiles by using a 210Pb-derived vertical accretion rate, estimated to be 0.05 cm year(-1) on the average. Sediments were dated up to 8 cm depth, corresponding to a layer of ca. 140 years old. The historical changes of metal accumulation along the sediment core have shown a moderate enrichment of Cd, Cu and Pb concentrations at present, of about threefold the corresponding background concentrations. Chronological trace metal records showed that metal fluxes have increased over the last 20 years, reaching the maximum values at present of 2.5, 22.5 and 45.8 (microg cm(-2) year(-1)) for Cd, Pb and Cu, respectively. These increments in metal fluxes are likely influenced by the development of anthropogenic land-based activities since over this period of time oil production activities in the region have had a significant development.  相似文献

The Amazonian forest is, due to its great size, carbon storage capacity and present-day variability in carbon uptake and release, an important component of the global carbon cycle. Paleo-environmental reconstruction is difficult for Amazonia due to the scarcity of primary palynological data and the mis-interpretation of some secondary data. Studies of lacustrine sediment records have shown that Amazonia has known periods in which the climate was drier than it is today. However, not all geomorphological features such as dunes, and slope erosion, which are thought to indicate rainforest regression, date from the time of the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM) and these features do not necessarily correspond to episodes of forest regression. There is also uncertainty concerning LGM carbon storage due to rainforest soils and biomass estimates. Soil carbon content may decrease moderately during the LGM, whereas rainforest biomass may change considerably in response to changes in the global environment. Biomass per unit area in Amazonia has probably been reduced by the cumulative effects of low CO2 concentration, a drier climate and lower temperatures. As few paleo-vegetation data are available, there is considerable uncertainty concerning the amount of carbon stored in Amazonia during the LGM, which may have corresponded to 44-94% of the carbon currently stored in biomass and soils.  相似文献

A number of hypotheses have previously been developed concerning the rates of uptake and elimination of radiocaesium (137Cs) in fish. These include the influence of potassium and other water chemical parameters on both uptake and elimination, and the effect of fish size on accumulation. In order to test these hypotheses, we have assembled a data set comprising more than 1,000 measurements of radiocaesium (137Cs) in predatory fish (perch, pike and brown trout) in nine European lakes during the years after Chernobyl. These data have been analysed using simple models for uptake and excretion of 137Cs in fish, showing that: 1. Fish-water concentration factors (CF) were inversely proportional to potassium [K+] concentration of the different lakes, in agreement with previous studies. 2. The uptake rate of 137Cs in fish was negatively correlated with lake [K+], but excretion rate was independent of [K+]. 3. Lower than expected CF values were found in one lake, Iso Valkj?rvi, Finland. This is attributed to inhibition of the K+ (and therefore 137Cs) high affinity transport system in aquatic plants and fish by low pH and/or low Ca2+. 4. The inclusion of fish weight as a parameter in our dynamic model significantly improves the ability of the model to fit the observed measurements of 137Cs. 5. The model developed from the above hypotheses was able to fit the data from nine different lakes to within approximately a factor of 3 of the observed values.  相似文献
