A site contaminated by mercury serves as an example for evaluating the environmental medicine aspects of mercury emissions on individuals living in the surroundings. Based on defined, conventional scenarios, estimations of internal exposure were made for seven different age groups and with regard to such contact media as soil, air and food. Using human monitoring methods, an attempt was made to compare the epidemiological results. The site-specific and pathway-specific estimation of exposure is based on a multitude of various samples as well as on measurements of concentrations in the compartments relevant for intake. As based upon rigid guideline values, both these calculations and the epidemiological investigations reveal a slight increase in the mercury exposure. 相似文献

The temperate rain forest of Chiloé Island, Chile, is inhabited by an endemic fox ( Dusicyon fulvipes ) first described by Charles Darwin and now designated Darwin's fox. Despite morphological differences, Darwin's fox has been considered only an insular subspecies of the mainland chilla fox ( D. griseus ). This follows the assumption that the island population, with an estimated population of less than 500, has been separated from the mainland chilla fox for only about 15,000 years and may have received occasional immigrants from the mainland. Consequently, this island population has not been protected as endangered or bred in captivity. Recently, a population of Darwin's fox was discovered on the Chilean mainland 600 km north of Chiloé Island. This population exists in sympatry with chilla and possibly culpeo ( D. culpaeus ) foxes, which suggests that Darwin's fox may be reproductively isolated. To clarify the phylogenetic position of Darwin's fox, we analyzed 344 bp of mitochondrial DNA control-region sequence of the three species of Chilean foxes. Darwin's foxes from the island and mainland populations compose a monophyletic group distinct from the two other Chilean fox species. This indicates that Darwin's fox was probably an early inhabitant of central Chile, and that its present distribution on the mainland may be a relict of a once much wider distribution. Our results highlight the ability of molecular genetic techniques to uncover historical relationships masked by recent events, such as local extinctions. The "rediscovery" of Darwin's fox as a distinct species implies that greater significance should be given to the protection of this species and its unique habitat and to documenting the extent of its mainland distribution. 相似文献

Setting of larvae of the oyster Crassostrea virginica was monitored in the James River, Virginia, USA from 1963 to 1980. Setting patterns were similar in two ways to those described prior to 1960 (before the onset of the oyster pathogen Haplosporidium nelsoni (MSX) in Chesapeake Bay): (1) setting intensity (average number of spat per shell) was greater at stations in the lower than upper estuary, and (2) on the average, 60 to 80% of the total annual set at each station occurred during a 6-week period from mid-August through September. However, annual setting intensity from 1963–1980 was lower than previously recorded, and annual sets occurred as a series of discrete pulses rather than continuously throughout the season. Pulses were each approximately 1 to 2 weeks in duration and separated by a period of diminished or no setting. Cross-correlation analysis of annual setting patterns among stations revealed three zones in the James River: the upper estuary and entire southwest side, the lower estuary, and a mid-estuary transition zone. Setting pulses tended to be synchronous at stations within each zone, but occurred 1 to 2 weeks later at stations in downriver than in upriver zones. The location of zones is related to known aspects of water circulation in the James River estuary. Summary Colonies of Anelosimus eximius in Panama had an average sex ratio of 0.15±sd 0.09, i.e. about five females for each male. The sex ratio in egg sacs reared was even lower (0.08±0.01), as was that of immatures in newly founded colonies (0.12±0.05). The possible mechanisms responsible are discussed. Mature colonies had an average ratio of 17 females and 2 males for each egg sac present (range: 2–91 females, 0.2–8.2 males) and contained a large proportion of females which were not inseminated but which presumably help. Since both sexes are diploid, arrhenotoky can be ruled out and it is assumed that some females do not come to reproduction, the proportion depending on the availability of resources. A method was developed for the risk assessment of a military waste site. The method consists of two steps: 1. evaluation of the exposure through different pathways and 2. derivation of substance-specific tolerable intake levels. In this first part of the paper the quantitative exposure analysis will be discussed. Exposure depends on the conditions at the contaminated site (e.g. soil characteristics), the type of utilisation (residential area, industrial area etc.) and the substance properties. In a specific utilisation scenario, e.g. as residential area, different exposure pathways are contributing to the total contaminant uptake. Because of the properties of nitroaromatic compounds like 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (good resorption through skin and accumulation in plants) exposure via dermal soil contact and via consumption of plants gains special importance. With these two exposure pathways as examples we explain the quantification of the exposure through different pathways by so-called exposure factors. By comparing the total exposure with tolerable intake levels for the compounds, waste site specific soil pollutant levels can be established (see second part of the paper in UWSF 6/94). 相似文献

A central question in the study of predator–prey relationships is to what extent prey behaviour is determined by avoidance
of predators. Here, we test whether the long-term risk of encountering lions and the presence of lions in the vicinity influence
the behaviour of large African herbivores at waterholes through avoidance of high-risk areas, increases in group size, changes
in temporal niche or changes in the time spent in waterhole areas. In Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, we monitored waterholes
to study the behaviour of nine herbivore species under different risks of encountering lions. We radio-collared 26 lions in
the study area which provided the opportunity to monitor whether lions were present during observation sessions and to map
longer-term seasonal landscapes of risk of encountering lions. Our results show that the preferred prey species for lions
(buffalo, kudu and giraffe) avoided risky waterholes. Group size increased as encounter risk increased for only two species
(wildebeest and zebra), but this effect was not strong. Interestingly, buffalo avoided the hours of the day which are dangerous
when the long-term and short-term risks of encountering lions were high, and all species showed avoidance of waterhole use
at night times when lions were in the vicinity. This illustrates well how prey can make temporal adjustments to avoid dangerous
periods coinciding with predator hunting. Additionally, many herbivores spent more time accessing water to drink when the
long- and short-term risks of encountering lions were high, and they showed longer potential drinking time when the long-term
risk of encountering lions was high, suggesting higher levels of vigilance. This study illustrates the diversity of behavioural

Since the mid-1970s, the western Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), inhabiting Alaskan waters from Prince William Sound west through the Aleutian Islands, has declined by over 80%. Changing oceanographic conditions, competition from fishing operations, direct human-related mortality, and predators have been suggested as factors driving the decline, but the indirect and interactive nature of their effects on sea lions have made it difficult to attribute changes in abundance to specific factors. In part, this is because only changes in abundance, not changes in vital rates, are known. To determine how vital rates of the western Steller sea lion have changed during its 28-year decline, we first estimated the changes in Steller sea lion age structure using measurements of animals in aerial photographs taken during population surveys since 1985 in the central Gulf of Alaska (CGOA). We then fit an age-structured model with temporally varying vital rates to the age-structure data and to total population and pup counts. The model fits indicate that birth rate in the CGOA steadily declined from 1976 to 2004. Over the same period, survivorship first dropped severely in the early 1980s, when the population collapsed, and then survivorship steadily recovered. The best-fitting model indicates that in 2004, the birth rate in the central Gulf of Alaska was 36% lower than in the 1970s, while adult and juvenile survivorship were close to or slightly above 1970s levels. These predictions and other model predictions concerning population structure match independent field data from mark-recapture studies and photometric analyses. The dominant eigenvalue for the estimated 2004 Leslie matrix is 1.0014, indicating a stable population. The stability, however, depends on very high adult survival, and the shift in vital rates results in a population that is more sensitive to changes in adult survivorship. Although our modeling analysis focused exclusively on the central Gulf of Alaska, the western Gulf of Alaska and eastern Aleutians show a similar pattern of declining pup fraction with no increase in the juvenile, or pre-breeding, fraction. This suggests that declining birth rate may be a problem for western Steller sea lions across the Gulf of Alaska and into the Aleutian Islands. 相似文献

Invasion of native ecosystems by exotic species can seriously threaten native biodiversity, alter ecosystem function, and inhibit conservation. Moreover, restoration of native plant communities is often impeded by competition from exotic species. Exotic species invasion may be limited by unfavorable abiotic conditions and by competition with native species, but the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors remains controversial and may vary during the invasion process. We used a long-term experiment involving restored vernal pool plant communities to characterize the temporal dynamics of exotic species invasion, and to evaluate the relative support for biotic and abiotic factors affecting invasion resistance. Experimental pools (n=256) were divided among controls and several seeding treatments. In most treatments, native vernal pool species were initially more abundant than exotic species, and pools that initially received more native seeds exhibited lower frequencies of exotic species over time. However, even densely seeded pools were eventually dominated by exotic species, following extreme climatic events that reduced both native and exotic plant densities across the study site. By the sixth year of the experiment, most pools supported more exotics than native vernal pool species, regardless of seeding treatment or pool depth. Although deeper pools were less invaded by exotic species, two exotics (Hordeum marinum and Lolium multiflorum) were able to colonize deeper pools as soon as the cover of native species was reduced by climatic extremes. Based on an information-theoretic analysis, the best model of invasion resistance included a nonlinear effect of seeding treatment and both linear and nonlinear effects of pool depth. Pool depth received more support as a predictor of invasion resistance, but seeding intensity was also strongly supported in multivariate models of invasion, and was the best predictor of resistance to invasion by H. marinum and L. multilorum. We conclude that extreme climatic events can facilitate exotic species invasions by both reducing abiotic constraints and weakening biotic resistance to invasion. 相似文献
