Inhibitory action of some usual antibiotic, substances have been tested on 25 species of bacteria isolated from marine algae cultures. Penicillin, kanamycin, neomycin and streptomycin appear to be the most convenient antibiotics for eliminating or inhibiting polluting bacteria populations.  相似文献

The in situ decomposition rate of urea was measured using 14C-labelled urea at 3 areas in the North Pacific Ocean: Sagami Bay on the southern coast of central Japan, the northwestern Pacific central waters and the subarctic Pacific waters. The mean values of the decomposition rates of urea in surface waters of these areas were 44.5, 1.51 and 1.32 mol urea m-3 d-1, respectively. These rates decreased with depth. High rates of urea carbon incorporation into particulate matter and the CO2 liberation from urea carbon into seawater were obtained in light bottles in the euphotic zone, while low rates were found in dark bottles. The turnover rates of urea in the 3 areas were calculated respectively as 12, 113 and 110 d at the surface, and the values increased with depth.  相似文献

Reproductive patterns of scleractinian corals in the northern Red Sea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The majority of published accounts on scleractinian coral reproduction are from the tropical Pacific and Caribbean, with very little information known about Red Sea species. This report examines variation in reproductive mode in 24 species of hermatypic corals (belonging to seven families) in the Gulf of Eilat, Red Sea. Eighteen species are hermaphroditic broadcasters, two are hermaphroditic brooders and three are gonochoric broadcasters. In the Pocilloporidae, the gonads project into the body cavity, while in the other six families the gonads reside inside the mesenteries. The number of gonads per polyp in broadcasting species follows family or genus lines. Fecundity (eggs per polyp) increases with polyp size. Brooding species usually exhibit one or two gonads per polyp and each gonad contains only one to three oocytes. Oocyte size varies widely and does not relate to mode of reproduction. The largest oocytes (diameter = 450 μm) occur in the brooding coral Alveopora daedalea and in broadcasting species of the genus Acropora (diameter = 420 μm). Gonad morphology and gonochorism versus hermaphroditism appear to be constrained phylogenetically at the family or genus level. Lastly, this report compares the data presented for Red Sea scleractinian species with the data available on scleractinian corals from other geographical regions. Trials for determination of culture conditions for the marine cyanophytes of Trichodesmium erythraeum and T. thiebautii were made with use of a synthetic medium. The Aquil medium, either with or without combined nitrogen, brought about stable growth of the two strains, T. erythraeum and T. thiebautii. However, they failed to grow in an ASP7 medium. The failure was found to be due to the toxic effect of Tris-aminomethane, the pH-buffer in this medium. Two important chemical conditions for the stable growth of Trichodesmium spp. were revealed. (1) Stable growth was supported by Ca2+ at high concentrations; in a concentration lower than 0.9 mM, cell-lysis promptly occurred, while the cells could grow without cell-lysis at Ca2+ concentrations higher than 7.5 mM even at a salinity as low as 19 S. Ca2+ is probably essential for the osmotic regulation in this organism. (2) Phosphate-toxicity at high concentrations was at least partly due to heavy metal(s) contaminating the reagent of inorganic phosphate. After treatment with a Chelex-100 column, phosphate concentration could be increased up to four times the previous concentrations without toxicity.  相似文献

To study the nocturnal feeding of euphausiids during vertical migrations and its impact on the phytoplankton, a phytoplankton-rich water mass (drogue marked) drifting over a dense krill scattering layer (acoustic 104kHz) in the lower St. Lawrence estuary was monitored over 46 h in July 1982. Phytoplankton >20 m was abundant and mostly concentrated at the bottom of the photic layer above the pycnocline. Less than 42% of the particulate carbon was due to phytoplankton. The krill scattering layer was about 2 to 3 km in width, elongated along the 100-m bathymetric contour, and absent when the bottom was shallower than 50 m. Its upper day depth was 50 m. At deeper depths, its vertical distribution frequently changed from unimodal to polymodal shapes and viceversa, often with large concentrations of zooplankton just above the bottom. Typical vertical migrations were observed on both days. At night the scattering layer had a lower scattering strength. Most of it was below the thermocline but net catches showed that large concentrations of euphausiids (up to 57 individuals m-3) crossed it. Stomach pigment content of Thysanoessa raschi was generally low, but mean stomach fullness was always high. They were more opportunistic than herbivorous. From stomach fullness and the presence of a food bolus in mouth parts, feeding in surface waters appeared to be intensive, but gut content indicated that food was not processed there. It is therefore suggested that individuals underwent vertical interchanges across the thermocline while feeding during the night. Meganyctiphanes norvegica had significant herbivorous activity during the night. The factors controlling shelter selection by the first post-larval stage of the American lobsterHomarus americanus were studied in the laboratory in 1988 using an experimental approach. The relative importance of shelter size, light level within shelters, number of shelter entrances, and presence of algal-film cover in and around them were investigated. Post-larvae showed a strong preference for opaque versus transparent shelters. No difference in post-larval selectivity was observed either for shelters of different widths or heights or between shelters with different numbers of entrances. Post-larvae showed no preference for microhabitats colonized by microorganisms compared to others without colonization. The intensity of the response measured suggests a possible hierarchical organization of the different cues involved in shelter selection, the light level within the shelter apparently being the most important. Simple linear regression was used to assess the effect of shelter area on the number of post-larvae occupying a shelter. Up to four post-larvae were observed simultaneously in a shelter of 40 cm2 basal area, indicating that they can cohabit at settlement. The minimum shelter area necessary to the first post-larval stage was estimated to be about 3.25 cm2. A series of processes by biofilter and Fenton oxidation to treat mature landfill leachate has been devised. At a hydraulic loading rate of 20 l m?3 d?1, a biofilter packed with aged refuse is found to remove 80% of chemical oxygen demand (COD), 89% of ammonia nitrogen and 96% of total phosphorus (TP). Particularly, TP levels dropped below 1 mg l?1. The optimal condition for Fenton oxidation was selected to be an initial pH of 5, a dosage of 0.01 and 0.02 mol l?1 of FeSO4 and H2O2, respectively, and a duration of 3 h, where COD removal efficiency reaches 58.6%, and BOD5/COD ratio is raised from 0.05 to 0.20. Subsequent treatment by a biofilter packed with slag reduces COD, ammonia nitrogen levels to less than 100, 25 mg l?1, respectively. A pilot scale experiment conducted in situ demonstrates that this series of processes exhibits a high efficiency in removing pollutants from mature landfill leachate and it is viable for application.  相似文献

This study demonstrates a remedial approach for completing the remediation of an aquifer contaminated with 1,1,2‐trichlorotrifluoroethane (Freon‐113) and 1,1,1‐trichloroethane (TCA). In 1987, approximately 13,000 pounds of Freon‐113 were spilled from a tank at an industrial facility located in the state of New York. The groundwater remediation program consisted of an extraction system coupled with airstripping followed by natural attenuation of residual contaminants. In the first phase, five recovery wells and an airstripping tower were operational from April 1993 to August 1999. During this time period over 10,000 pounds of CFC‐13 and 200 pounds of TCA were removed from the groundwater and the contaminant concentrations decreased by several orders of magnitude. However, the efficiency of the remediation system to recover residual Freon and/or TCA reduced significantly. This was evidenced by: (1) low levels (< 10 ppb) of Freon and TCA captured in the extraction wells and (2) a slight increase of Freon and/or TCA in off‐site monitoring wells. A detailed study was conducted to evaluate the alternative for the second‐phase remediation. Results of a two‐year groundwater monitoring program indicated the contaminant plume to be stable with no significant increase or decrease in contaminant concentrations. Monitored geochemical parameters suggest that biodegradation does not influence the fate and transport of these contaminants, but other mechanisms of natural attenuation (primarily sorption and dilution) appear to control the fate and transport of these contaminants. The contaminants appear to be bound to the soil matrix (silty and clay units) with limited desorption as indicated by the solid phase analyses of contaminant concentrations. Results of fate and transport modeling indicated that contaminant concentrations would not exceed the action levels in the wells that showed a slight increase in contaminant concentrations and in the downgradient wells (sentinel) during the modeled timeframe of 30 years. This feasibility study for natural attenuation led to the termination of the extraction system and a transaction of the property, resulting in a significant financial benefit for the original site owner. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The distribution patterns and factors affecting uptake rates and turnover times of dissolved inorganic nutrients by heterotrophic bacterioplankton (HB) in Jiaozhou Bay were studied based on in situ surveys and laboratory culturing. The uptake rates of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) by HB are limited by the temperature of the water and the concentration of dissolved organic carbon. The turnover times of DIP and DIN by HB are regulated by the concentrations of the nutrients and the numbers of HB, which show significant spatiotemporal variability in Jiaozhou Bay. HB may aggravate the P-limitation of phytoplankton by competing for phosphorus in summer in Jiaozhou Bay. HB play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and may increase the N:P ratio and the accumulation of DIN, thereby accelerating the imbalance of the N:P ratio in Jiaozhou Bay.  相似文献
