A questionnaire study of Swedish public employees with frequent and different types of VDT work (n = 2,025) was conducted. Eight different kinds of eye discomfort were examined, and an additive index was constructed. Eye discomfort was statistically related to aspects of work organization. The highest levels of discomfort were reported by computer-aided design (CAD), data entry, and word processing groups; groups with mixed VDT tasks displayed the lowest level of symptoms. Time spent at a VDT, low degree of work control, time pressure, and high pace of work were all associated with relatively high levels of eye discomfort. There was significant interaction between experience of stress and time spent at a VDT with respect to both the eye discomfort index and three specific symptoms (itching, gritty feeling, and dryness). Whereas dryness, smarting, and itching of the eyes seem most strongly related to work conditions, redness and watery eyes seem most weakly related. 相似文献

Low bone density and renal dysfunction following environmental cadmium exposure in China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents the main findings of a study on health effects of environmental cadmium pollution in China, performed in 1998, i.e. approximately 25 years after the first warnings of such effects were published in Ambio. Forearm bone mineral density (BMD) and renal dysfunction were assessed in population groups exposed to cadmium via rice. Decreased BMD was found in postmenopausal women with elevated urinary cadmium (CdU) or cadmium in blood (CdB) and among men with elevated CdB. Also, clear and statistically significant dose-effect and dose-response relationships were found between CdB or CdU and renal dysfunction (increased excretion of retinol-binding protein). This is the first report of bone effects among Cd-exposed population groups in Asia outside Japan. The report is also of interest since it demonstrates that bone effects, a comparatively severe adverse health effect of Cd, in combination with renal dysfunction, still occurs in environmentally exposed population groups in Asia. Bisphenol A (BPA; 2,2-(4,4(')-dihydroxydiphenyl)propane) is predominantly used as an intermediate in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Traces of BPA released into the environment can reach the soil via application of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment systems that receive wastewaters containing BPA, or from leachate from uncontrolled landfills. The biodegradability of BPA has been previously investigated in several studies designed to simulate surface waters and biological wastewater treatment systems. However, there is little information available about the fate of BPA in soil. Therefore, laboratory soil degradation and batch adsorption studies were conducted with 14C-BPA and four soils according to international guidelines. The soils represented a broad range of physico-chemical properties. An important result of the degradation study was that, independent of the soil type, 14C-BPA was rapidly dissipated and not detectable in soil extracts following 3 days of incubation. Based on this result, a dissipation half-life of less than 3 days was estimated. The major route of dissipation of 14C-BPA in soil was the formation of bound residues that could not be recovered by exhaustive Soxhlet extraction. 14C-BPA was also shown to be transiently converted to up to five metabolites, but within 3 days, neither 14C-BPA nor 14C-metabolites were detectable in the soils. After 120 days incubation, significant amounts (up to 20% of the radioactivity applied) of the parent compound were recovered as 14CO(2). Soil adsorption experiments indicated that the distribution coefficients (K(oc)) were between 636 and 931, classifying BPA as having low mobility for all tested soils. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in marine fish and blue mussels from southern Greenland 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have not previously been reported in Greenland. In this study shorthorn sculpins (Myoxocephalus scorpius) were sampled at three locations in southern Greenland; Usuk (no population), Igaliko (population 40) and Qaqortoq (population 3200). Furthermore uvak (Gadus ogac), spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor), starry ray (Raja radiata), and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) were collected at Usuk. Pooled samples of fish liver and blue mussel were analysed for lower brominated PBDEs (BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100 and BDE-153). The highest PBDE levels were found in Qaqortoq followed by Igaliko and Usuk. The measured sum PBDE concentrations in shorthorn sculpin collected at Qaqortoq, Igaliko and Usuk, were 8.2, 3.1 and 2.1 all in units of microg kg(-1) wet weight. In female and male uvak collected at Usuk PBDE levels of 7.1 and 12.0 microg kg(-1) wet weight were measured, while the concentrations were 1.2 microg kg(-1) in spotted wolffish, 1.4 microg kg(-1) in starry ray and 0.11 microg kg(-1) in blue mussels from the same locality all measured on a wet weight basis. The highest concentrations were measured in uvak, a top-predator on fish indicating that PBDEs are biomagnifying. The level of tetra-hexa BDEs is 15-24 times lower than PCB levels measured in the same samples, except for shorthorn sculpin collected at Qaqortoq, where the level of PBDEs was 40 times lower than the level of PCBs. The high concentration of PCBs relative to PBDEs in shorthorn sculpin collected at Qaqortoq signifies a local emission of PCBs, which is higher than the local emission of PBDEs. 相似文献

Zea mays was grown in nutrient solution with different concentrations of sulphite and sulphate (0, 5, and 10 mM) at pH 5 or 7, with or without aeration, for five days. Sulphite injured the plants, especially at low pH. Lack of aeration increased the sulphite injury of the plants at the high pH. in the aerated solutions, sulphite concentrations approached zero after five hours, while the unaerated solutions still contained sulphite after four days. Very little sulphite was found in the plants. The results indicate that the toxicity to the plants of the different chemical species of the sulphite in the solution decreases in the following order: SO2 (aq) > HSO3
– > SO3

Summary. The basic chemical structure of the sex
pheromone of the pine sawfly Microdiprion pallipes
(Fallén) has earlier been identified as the propionate
ester of (2S,3S,7R/S,11R/S)/(2R,3R,7R/S,11R/S)-3,7,11-
trimethyl-2-tridecanol. We now report the results from
further investigations on the male response to individual
stereoisomers and to blends of stereoisomers, both in electroantennographic
(EAG) recordings and in field trapping
experiments. We also present our attempts to determine the
stereochemistry of the compounds present in females of
M. pallipes. By comparing gas chromatograms and mass
spectra obtained from natural extracts with those from synthetic
compounds it was found that the females contain one
or more of the four (2S,3S,7R/S,11R/S)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2-
tridecanol isomers (SS++-1). The active pheromone component
is the corresponding propionate ester 2. In EAG
experiments, males responded most strongly to five propionate
ester samples, namely two four-isomer blends: SS++-2
and SR++-2, and three individual stereoisomers: SSSR-,
SRRR- and SRSR-2. In a series of field trapping experiments
it was found that males were attracted to the SR++-2
four-isomer blend and to the individual isomer SSSR-2.
Based on the EAG-recordings and field responses of males
and the stereoisomers found in the females, we suggest that
the propionate ester of (2S,3S,7S,11R)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2-
tridecanol (SSSR-2) is used as a main component of the sex
pheromone in M. pallipes. Apparently the males react to
other stereoisomers in addition to that or those produced by
