The burrows of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) and of the crab Goneplax rhomboides (L.) were studied in Loch Torridon, Scotland. Polyester resin casts of burrows in the sea were made by divers to reveal their subsurface form. Tunnels made by N. norvegicus were usually simple, with two or more openings on the mud surface, and penetrated to a depth of about 30 cm. G. rhomboides burrows did not descend more than about 15 cm beneath the surface, but were usually more complex than the lobster burrows and had several openings. The methods of burrow construction used by the two crustaceans are described from aquarium observations. Neither N. norvegicus nor G. rhomboides show obvious morphological adaptations for burrowing, and it is suggested that the fossorial habit was adopted very early by decapods. The burrows of N. norvegicus do not seem to have assumed any functions in addition to the original one of providing refuge from predators. According to a widely accepted view of intertidal community organization in the north-west Atlantic Ocean, the abundance of perennial seaweeds is regulated by the activities of herbivores (which control ephemeral algal competitors) and carnivores (which control populations of competing filterfeeders). This concept was examined in 1987–1988 in a eulittoral belt on the Atlantic shores of Nova Scotia, Canada, dominated by a closed canopy of Fucus spiralis. A factorial design was used to test the effects of (a) grazers (there were no carnivores present, (b) adult F. spiralis canopy, and (c) substratum type on the abundance of perennial and ephemeral seaweeds. Grazers had no significant (p>0.05) effect on the density or cover of juvenile F. spiralis, but significantly reduced canopy cover of adults through the winter. The presence of grazers significantly enhanced the cover of ephemeral algae in early spring. Barnacle presence enhanced the cover of juvenile F. spiralis, but reduced the canopy of adult plants through abrasion. The most important regulator of recruitment density in F. spiralis was the presence of a canopy of conspecific adults. Canopy greatly reduced juvenile development. There was no significant relationship between the covers of perennial F. spiralis and ephemeral seaweeds. This study demonstrates that the recruitment of the perennial rockweed population examined is not dependent on the activities consumer animals. The impact of resort developments in three alpine streams of Kosciusko National Park was examined by the State Pollution Control Commission of NSW over 1981 and 1982. Physico-chemical measurements such as nutrient concentrations, stream flow and temperature were correlated with measures of periphyton growth using artificial substrates and the Thomas (1978) method for estimation of in-stream biomass.Stream flow was the major physical parameter controlling in-stream periphyton growth, far outweighing seasonal temperature variations. Nutrients emanating from resort developments were also a major influence on biomass and taxa. Natural accumulations occurred upstream of resort developments under low flow conditions and were associated with taxa typical of clean water conditions.
