By using dialysis equilibrium experiments, the sorption of a branched nonylphenol isomer [4-(1-ethyl-1,3-dimethylpentyl)-phenol] (NP111) on various humic acids (HAs) isolated from river sediments and two reference HAs was studied. The HAs were characterized by solid-state 13C direct polarization/magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (13C DP/MAS NMR) spectroscopy. Sorption isotherms of NP111 on HAs were described by a linear model. The organic carbon-normalized sorption coefficient (KOC) ranged from 2.3 × 103 to 1.5 × 104 L kg−1. Interestingly, a clear correlation between KOC value and alkyl C content was observed, indicating that the aliphaticity of HAs markedly dominates the sorption of NP111. These new mechanistic insights about the NP111 sorption indicate that the fate of nonylphenols in soil or sediment depends not only on the content of HA, but also on its structural composition. 相似文献
Fluoride is a naturally occurring toxic mineral present in drinking water and causes yellowing of teeth, tooth problems etc. Fluorspar, Cryolite and Fluorapatite are the naturally occurring minerals, from which fluoride finds its path to groundwater through infiltration. In the present study two groundwater samples, Station I and Station II at Hyderabad megacity, the capital of Andhra Pradesh were investigated for one year from January 2001 to December 2001. The average fluoride values were 1.37 mg/l at Station I and 0.91 mg/l at Station II. The permissible limit given by BIS (1983) 0.6-1.2 mg/l and WHO (1984) 1.5 mg/l for fluoride in drinking water. The groundwaters at Station I exceeded the limit while at Station II it was within the limits. The study indicated that fluoride content of 0.5 mg/l is sufficient to cause yellowing of teeth and dental problems. 相似文献
Obligate avian brood parasites lay their eggs in nests of other species (hosts), which raise parasitic young. Parasitic nestlings
are likely to influence host’s parental behaviours as they typically beg for food more vigorously than young host for a given
hunger level. However, few studies have tested this idea, with conflicting results. These prior studies were largely limited
to biparental hosts, but little is known about the effect of brood parasitism on parental behaviours in hosts that breed cooperatively.
We followed a multimodel approach to examine the effect of brood parasitism on nest provisioning and helper recruitment in
the baywing (Agelaioides badius), a cooperative breeder parasitised by screaming (Molothrus rufoaxillaris) and shiny (Molothrus bonariensis) cowbirds. Multimodel inference results indicated that feeding visits increased with nestling age, cooperative group size
and number of cowbird nestlings in the brood. Brood size had little influence on feeding visits, which further suggests that
baywings adjusted their provisioning effort in response to cowbird parasitism. In addition, nests parasitised artificially
with shiny cowbird eggs or hatchlings recruited more helpers than unmanipulated nests having only host or screaming cowbird
young. Our results provide novel evidence that brood parasitism and cooperative breeding interact in determining the levels
of nest provisioning. 相似文献
Two statistical tests for correlation between a circular variate and a linear variate are presented. The tests are applied to a small data set concerning Freon-12 concentration and wind direction in Woods Hole, Massachusetts during the summer of 1987. A significant correlation is found. Further analysis suggests that this directional effect is related to onshore Freon-12 release.Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Contribution Number 6750 相似文献
We have investigated the ability of high-resolution proton NMR spectroscopy to provide a biochemical constituent screening of human amniotic fluid (AF). Proton NMR spectra were obtained at 300 MHz on AF from patients undergoing amniocentesis in the mid-trimester. Only AF from normal pregnancies (normal fetal karyotype, normal a-fetoprotein levels, normal birth outcome) was used in this study. The AF supernatant was lyophilized and resuspended in deuterated water containing 0.1 mm phosphate buffer and 6.02 mm disodium maleate. Identification of low molecular weight compounds was confirmed by two-dimensional NMR spectra (primarily correlated spectroscopy, or COSY) and standard addition techniques. A broad profile of compounds were ‘NMR visible’ in a single proton spectrum, including creatinine, glucose, organic acids (acetate, citrate, and lactate) and several amino acids (alanine, histidine, leucine, phenylalanine, tyrosine and valine). The proton spectrum was unaffected by prior freezing/thawing of AF samples. We were able to quantify compounds by comparison with an added concentration standard (maleate) at concentrations as low as 30 μm. Good agreement with literature values based on other analytical techniques was obtained. 相似文献
Vocal signaling can be an important component of vertebrate communication during social interactions. If vocalizations vary among individuals but are consistent within a given individual, they may be used to discriminate among individuals. In many species, territorial males use vocalizations to discriminate between neighbors and strangers and either respond more aggressively toward strangers relative to neighbors (“dear enemy” effect) or they respond more aggressively toward neighbors relative to strangers (“nasty neighbor” effect). In the greater prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), male vocalizations are an integral part of the display males produce on leks. We investigated whether male greater prairie-chickens discriminate among familiar individuals on their own territory, familiar individuals outside their normal territory and strangers from a nearby lek. Vocal characteristics varied among males, suggesting that vocalizations may potentially be used by prairie-chickens to identify individuals. Males responded to playback of prairie-chicken calls by vocalizing at a faster rate and approaching the playback speaker, but did not vary in their response to the vocalizations based on the identity of the caller. Our results suggest that variation is present among the vocalizations of individual male greater prairie-chickens, but males do not appear to discriminate among familiar individuals and strangers based solely on their “boom” vocalizations. Greater prairie-chicken vocalization likely functions as a way of announcing that a territory is occupied and defended, but it may also serve as a way of advertising to conspecifics or as a signal that is secondary to other forms of communication. 相似文献
Membranes and filters made of nanofibers can have many medicines and water treatment applications. The use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with antibacterial activity in these structures improve their efficiency. However, due to the toxicity of the compounds used in the chemical synthesis of AgNPs, in this study, AgNPs were obtained through a biological process using Fusarium sporotrichioides. AgNPs preparation conditions were optimized, including F. sporotrichioides medium and AgNO3 concentration. Next, a PVA nanofiber membrane with bentonite and AgNPs (Bio-AgNPs or Chem-AgNPs) was prepared using electrospinning. The optimal conditions for the production of Bio-AgNPs were the culture of F. sporotrichioides in the MGYP culture medium and 12 M of AgNO3. The Bio-AgNPs particle size and zeta potential were 58 nm and ??16.8 mV, respectively, with antibacterial activity. The PVA/NB/AgNPs nanofibers operation conditions included 7.5% w/w PVA, 3% w/w bentonite, and AgNPs 5% w/w at a voltage of 11 kV, feed rate of 0.5 mL/h, and 15 cm distance between the needle and the collector. The average diameter of the PVA/NB/Bio-AgNPs nanofibers was 230 nm. Also, the presence of silver in the nanofibers was confirmed through EDX and XRD methods. The antibacterial assay of the nanofibers showed that the inhibition zone of PVA/NB/Bio-AgNPs against E. coli and S. aureus was 0.62 and 0.36 mm, which is better than PVA/NB/Chem-AgNPs and comparable with chloramphenicol. The produced membrane is suitable for water treatment, food packaging, and wound dressing because of its good thermal, mechanical, and antibacterial properties.
