Planning for the extraction of aggregates is typically dealt with at a case to case basis, without assessing environmental
impacts strategically. In this study we assess the impact of sand mining in Poyang Lake, where dredging began in 2001 after
sand mining in the Yangtze River had been banned. In April 2008 concern over the impact on the biodiversity led to a ban on
sand mining in Poyang Lake until further plans could be developed. Planning will require consideration of both sand extraction
in relation to available sediment resources and also environmental impacts within the context of future demand for sand in
the lower Yangtze Valley. We used pairs of near-infrared (NIR) Aster satellite imagery to estimate the number of vessels leaving
the lake. Based on this we calculated a rate of sand extraction of 236 million m3 year−1 in 2005–2006. This corresponds to 9% of the total Chinese demand for sand. It qualifies Poyang Lake as probably the largest
sand mining operation in the world. It also indicates that sand extraction currently dominates the sediment balance of the
lower Yangtze River. A positive relation between demand for sand and GDP, revealed by historic data from the USA, suggests
that the current per capita demand for sand in China might increase in the near future from 2 to 4 m3 year−1. We review various environmental impacts and question whether it will be possible to preserve the rich biodiversity of the
lake, while continuing at the same time satisfying the increasing Chinese demand for sand. Finally we review alternative options
for sand mining, in order to relieve the pressure from the Poyang Lake ecosystem. 相似文献

The study included one station close to a pollution source (depth 59 m) and another far from polluted areas (depth 40 m). Samples were analysed for organic chlorine, bromine and sulfur compounds. Samples taken with a corer were sliced to the layers of 0-1, 1-4, 4-7 cm etc. down to the depth of 34 cm. The dating was made with two independent methods, the 210Po method and with the soot particle counting method. The analyses were made with a multiresidue method. Gas chromatography was connected to low resolution mass spectrometry (LRMS) or to high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). A different extraction was applied to screen the possible occurrence of polysulfides. Typical chlorophenol and chlorohydrocarbon traces from chlorobleaching of pulp were non-detectable. Also PCDDs, PCDFs, PCBs and various organochloride pesticides, fire retardant residues PBDEs, PBDDs and PBDFs and polychlorinated phenyl salicylates were not detected. Instead, methylated dibenzothiophenes Me-DBTs and Di-Me-DBTs, typical traces of oil based defoamers used in e.g. paper mills were found in the surface layers of the polluted site. Polysulfides were analyzed from layers representing years 1955-1970 from the polluted site. The structures of five congeners were according to GC/MS dimethyl trisulfide, 1,2,3,4-tetrathiepane, pentathiane, 1,2,3,4-tetrathiane and 1,2,4,5-tetrathiepane. Many of the analyzed pollutants have not been reported earlier from Lake Ladoga. The only positive observations were from oil-based defoamers used in paper mills, and from polysulfides, which are either of natural origin or indicate a discharge in the 1950s and 1960s. The bioaccumulation potential and environmental fate of polychlorinated hydroxydiphenyl ethers (HO-PCDEs; polychlorinated phenoxyphenols, PCPP), the major impurities of chlorophenol formulations and their methoxy analogues (MeO-PCDEs; polychlorinated methoxyanisoles, PCPAs) were investigated. Oligochaete worms (Lumbriculus variegatus) exposed to sediment spiked with a model substance of one HO-hexaCDE (4'-HO-PCDE 161) or its methoxy analogue (4'-MeO-PCDE 161) clearly accumulated the test compounds revealing the potential for environmental risk of HO-PCDEs and MeO-PCDEs. The HO-PCDE tested has earlier been reported as an abundant component in a Finnish chlorophenol formulation (Ky-5) and its methoxy analogue is recognized as an abundant MeO-PCDE in sawmill soil contaminated by the formulation. The occurrence of 4'-HO-PCDE 161 and its methoxy analogue among other HO-PCDEs and MeO-PCDEs in lake mussels (Anodonta piscinalis) incubated in a river contaminated via the manufacture of Ky-5 showed that these compounds are bioavailable and transported in the aquatic environment. Mussel comparison with sediment data pointed to a higher accumulation potential for MeO-PCDEs than for HO-PCDEs. The finding of HO-PCDEs in groundwater samples collected from a groundwater reservoir, which had been contaminated by chlorophenols, points to potential of HO-PCDEs for transport with water in soil. 相似文献

River restoration efforts require interdisciplinary approaches involving fluvial geomorphology, hydraulic engineering, ecology, sedimentology, chemistry, social geography, and sociology. We investigated the functioning of artificial structures called “Casiers Girardon” (groyne fields) in the Rhône River. We assessed potential benefits and risks linked to removing the Rhône groyne fields in a restoration context, with particular focus on the potential for increased bank erosion. Hydraulic, morphological, chemical, ecological, and social issues resulting from dismantlement were studied for terrestrialized and aquatic Casiers Girardon. Only 10% of Casiers Girardon have maintained their aquatic features, whereas most of the Casiers are terrestrialized. Our results help to confirm the effectiveness of restoration actions; however, they also indicate uncertainties and additional knowledge needs, especially in regard to potential incompatibilities between Casier restoration and conservation. Then, an interdisciplinary conceptual model was developed to identify interventions to be considered in Casiers Girardon, according to their terrestrialization rate and physiochemical characteristics (connectivity, amount of gravel vs. fine sediment, contamination level). This model synthetizes scientific results and expert judgment and provides management recommendations based on ecological and sociological expectations about the restoration of Casiers Girardon. The model highlights high heterogeneity in functioning and ecological potential between terrestrialized and aquatic Casiers. Dismantling of terrestrialized Casiers has strong potential to provide multiple benefits, whereas aquatic Casiers could be maintained as valuable backwaters. The managing guidelines for the Casiers Girardon of the Rhône River should be adapted according to local conditions, as well as expected benefits and needs, and conducted in co-ordination with all actors involved in and affected by the restoration. 相似文献

Basing on the material emission data obtained in a test chamber, chemical mass balance (CMB) was used to assess the source apportionment of volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in three newly built timber frame houses. CMB has been proven to be able to discriminate the source contributions for two contrasted environmental conditions (with and without ventilation). The shutdown of the ventilation system caused an increase in the VOC concentrations due to the increased contribution of indoor surface materials like the door material and furniture explaining together over 65% of total VOCs. While the increase in formaldehyde concentration is mainly due to furniture (contribution of 70%), the increase in α-pinene concentration is almost exclusively attributable to the emission of door material (up to 84%). The apportionment of VOC source contributions appears as highly dependent on the position of source materials in the building (surface materials or internal materials) and the ventilation conditions explaining that the concentrations of compounds after the shutdown of ventilation system do not increase in equivalent proportion. Knowledge of indoor sources and its contributions in real conditions may help in the selection of materials and in the improvement of construction operations to reduce the indoor air pollution. 相似文献

The aerobic biodegradation of commercial nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) mixture and alkali lignin was studied using the OECD headspace test accompanied by the simultaneous measurement of ecotoxicity directly from the biodegradation liquors and by the follow-up of the chemical composition of the studied chemicals. NPE degradation was dependent on the inoculum source: approximately 40% of NPE was mineralized into CO2 during the 4-week experiment when inoculum from Helsinki City wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was used, and only 12% was mineralized when inoculum from Jyväskylä City WWTP was used. Chemical analyses revealed a shift in the ethoxylate chain length from longer to shorter soon after the beginning of the NPE biodegradation tests. At the same time also toxicity (reverse electron transport assay, RET) and estrogenic activity (human estrogen receptor yeast) measured directly from the biodegradation liquors decreased. In case of alkali lignin, approximately 11% was mineralized in the test and chemical analysis showed in maximum a 30% decrease in lignin concentration. Toxicity of lignin biodegradation liquors started to decrease in the beginning of the test, but became more toxic towards the end of the test again. Especially RET assay proved to be sensitive enough for measuring toxicity changes directly from biodegradation liquors, although a concentrating treatment of the liquors is recommended for a more detailed characterization and identification of toxic metabolites. 相似文献

Semipermeable membrane sampling devices (SPMDs) and caged lake mussels (Anodonta piscinalis) were simultaneously deployed at four lake watercourse sites in Central Finland four weeks in August 1992. This study was
part of the regular annual monitoring of the organochlorine compounds (OCC) in pulp-mill recipient watercourses of Finland
with bivalves. Chlorohydrocarbons (CHCs), chlorophenol compounds (PCPs), chloroanisoles (PCAs) and chloroveratroles (PCVs)
were analyzed from lipid extract of mussels and from the synthetic triolein lipid of the SPMDs. Hexane-diethyl ether (9:1,
v/v) dialysis using polyethylene membrane was applied in dean up of the SPMD lipids and, for comparison, to six sets of the
mussel fat. Dialysis recovered CHCs but not PCPs from the mussel fat. CHCs, PCPs, PCAs and PCVs were all recovered in dialysis
of the SPMD lipid. Handling of SPMDs in the transport and deployment operations caused significant OCC contamination for the
blank SPMDs. Similar trends were revealed in the OCC profiles for mussels ans SPMDs. An exception was the lack of PCPs appearing
in SPMDs that did appear in mussels and in a complementary manner the appearance of the PCAs and PCVs in SPMDs. 相似文献
