A fine-mesh seine net was used at regular intervals to collect fishes from the entrance channel and basin of the Blackwood
River Estuary (south-western Australia), from Deadwater Lagoon, which is joined to the entrance channel by a narrow and shallow
water-course and thus constitutes part of this estuary, and from Flinders Bay into which the estuary discharges. Sampling
was at six-weekly intervals between February and December 1994. The juveniles of some marine species, such as Pelates sexlineatus, Rhabdosargus sarba and Aldrichetta forsteri, were either found only in the estuary or were in far higher densities in the estuary than in Flinders Bay. In contrast,
the juveniles of some other marine species, such as Sillago schomburgkii, were relatively abundant in both environments, while others such as S. bassensis, Pelsartia humeralis, Lesueurina platycephala and Spratelloides robustus were either far more abundant in Flinders Bay or entirely restricted to this marine embayment. The various marine species
found in inshore waters thus apparently vary considerably in their “preference” for estuaries as nursery areas. Although some
marine species were abundant in the shallows of the estuary, the fish fauna of these waters was dominated by the estuarine-spawning
species Leptatherina wallacei, Favonigobius lateralis, L. presbyteroides and Atherinosoma elongata. The above regional differences help account␣for the very marked difference that was found between the compositions of the
shallow-water␣ichthyofaunas of Flinders Bay and each of the three estuarine regions. The ichthyofaunal compositions of the
basin and channel underwent pronounced changes during winter, when freshwater discharge increased markedly and salinities
in the estuary thus declined precipitously. This faunal change was mainly attributable to the emigration of marine stragglers,
a reduction in the densities of marine estuarine-opportunist species such as Pelates sexlineatus and R. sarba, and the immigration of large numbers of both young 0+ Aldrichetti forsteri from the sea and of L. wallacei from the river. Although most of the above species were also abundant in Deadwater Lagoon, the ichthyofaunal composition
of this region did not undergo the same seasonal changes, presumably due to the lack of riverine input and thus the maintenance
of relatively high salinities throughout the year. The number of marine straggler species was much lower in Deadwater Lagoon
than in the estuary basin, reflecting a far more restricted tidal exchange with the entrance channel. However, the overall
density of fishes was far higher in Deadwater Lagoon than in the estuary basin or entrance channel, due mainly to the far
higher densities of the estuarine species Atherinosoma elongata and L. wallacei and of the 0+ age class of the marine species R. sarba. The high densities of certain species in Deadwater Lagoon are assumed to be related, at least in part, to the high level of
productivity and protection that is provided by the presence of patches of Ruppia megacarpa, an aquatic angiosperm that was not present in the estuary basin or entrance channel.

The purpose of this investigation was to establish reproductive phenology of the dioecious marine floridean red alga Polysiphonia lanosa (L.) Tandy. Specifically, the distribution and frequencies of male and female plants, timing of their sexual maturity, fecundity
and success of fertilization were investigated. The presence of cystocarps was taken as an indication of syngamy. Populations
of P. lanosa in the Bay of Fundy reproduce in spring, summer and autumn. Both male and female filaments were present in equal abundance
at all sampling locations, grew in close proximity, and occurred with equal abundance at all elevations above chart datum.
During the growing season most of the mature plants contained reproductive organs with apparently functional gametangia containing
gametes the structure and behavior of which conformed to those reported in the literature for other species of the genus.
Male and female plants of P. lanosa matured synchronously during late May to early July at all collecting sites. The ratio of spermatia to carpogonia calculated
for the sampled population was high, 3000–4800 spermatia:1 carpogonium. At the end of the growing season (late October) the
fertilization success was at its maximum of 50 to 90% and at its minimum in July at 24%. The three free-living life-history
phases (females, males and tetrasporophytes) were abundant and occurred with equal frequency, indicating that a complete life
cycle was common at the studied location.

Based on demographic analysis of four different temporally enclosed demes of Pandalus borealis in Gullmarsfjorden on the Swedish west coast and published information, I discuss the notion of environmental sex determination
in protandric pandalid shrimps as suggested by sex allocation theory. Demographic results showed that age structure and mortality
rates varied substantially between four studied periods without noticeable effects on the age of sex change in the fjord populations.
The majority of shrimps changed sex at an approximate age of 3 years and became females at an age of 3 to 4 years, however,
low proportions (4 to 7%) of 2nd year females (transitional at ca. 1 year) and 3rd year females (5 to 12%) (transitional at
ca. 2 years) were present each year. Low proportions of primary females were also found in two of the temporally enclosed
demes, in 1985 (9%) and in 1987 (5%). These results do not indicate that yearly variations in age structure, mortality, or
frequency of older breeders in the breeding population affect the age of sex change in temporally enclosed fjord demes of
this protandric species. An alternative to assuming that the protandric mode of reproduction in pandalid shrimp is combined
with environmental sex determination is suggested.

Observations and experiments on the associative behavior of the fish Cryptocentrus cryptocentrus (Valenoiennes) and the shrimp Alpheus djiboutensis
De Man from the Red Sea were carried out in artificial burrows. A signal system, bringing about correlated behavior in fish and shrimp, consisted of antennal contact of the shrimp with the fish, tail undulations by the fish and, finally, emergence of the shrimp. The shrimp emerged from the burrow only in the presence of the fish. A constant antennal contact was maintained by the partners while the shrimp was outside the burrow. Emerging from the burrow, the shrimp pushed the fish towards the entrance. Following visual stimulation, the shrimp always retreated back into the burrow with the fish. However, the further back the shrimp was located inside the burrow, the less intense was its retreat with the fish. In the absence of the fish, visual stimulation of the shrimp had no effect. From September to November 1991, UV-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were monitored in a natural population of
the sea urchin Sterechinusneumayeri from a coastal area of Anvers Island (Antarctic Peninsula). MAA concentrations were determined for specific tissues (gonad,
digestive tract and body wall) from adults collected at four depths (intertidal, 8, 15 and 24 m). Four MAAs were identified:
mycosporine-glycine, shinorine, porphyra-334 and paly-thine. Concentrations of MAAs among replicate individuals varied considerably.
Ovaries had high concentrations of MAAs (84 to 1389 μg g−1 dry wt), while testes had non-detectable levels. The relative abundance of specific MAAs in ovaries appeared to be related
to the spawning cycle. Digestive-tract samples had MAA concentrations as high as 3000 μg g−1 dry wt, but the mean MAA content in intertidal individuals decreased by 70% over 3 mo during spring. The body walls of sea
urchins had very low amounts of MAAs (≤ 0.08 μg g−1 dry wt). There were significant depth differences in the␣total MAA content of the ovary ( p <0.001), ( p <0.015), digestive tract ( p <0.001), and body wall with organisms from the intertidal and 8 m depth having the highest concentrations of MAAs. Biological
dosimetry indicated that UV-B (280 to 320 nm) wavelengths penetrated 3 to 7 m below the sea ice during the study period. The
total MAA content in ovaries decreased with depth on all sample dates; however, the MAA content of the digestive tract and
body wall did not exhibit a consistent pattern of change with depth. The MAA content of tissues did not change significantly
with the temporal gradient of light exposure that was established by both ozone depletion and increasing photoperiod, except
in the digestive tract sampled from intertidal specimens. Adult urchins are probably well-protected from UV exposure by the
water column and a calcareous test; however, the results of this study suggest that, even under ice cover, depth of habitation
is a determinant of MAA content in S. neumayeri. Large daily and seasonal fluctuations in the light regime, which are characteristic of Antarctic coastal environments, apparently
do not provide reliable cues to elicit a detectable, temporal, biochemical response.

The native vascular plant flora of the Republic of Singapore has suffered the extinction of 594 out of a total 2277 species. These represent local, not global, species extinctions. Coastal habitats, including mangroves, have lost 39% of their species, while inland forests have last 29%. Epiphytic species (62% loss) appear particularly prone to extinction, which is reflected in a similar disposition exhibited by the Orchidaceae. Deforestation and disturbance have been the main cause of plant species extinction in Singapore. The rich mangrove epiphyte flora has been totally exterminated, and a number of tree species are reduced to populations of a few mature individuals. Many more species continue to survive than the species-area relationship would predict given the 99.8% loss of primary forest. This is interpreted as a result of the failure of equilibrium to be achieved yet in the remnant forest fragments, even after more than a century of isolation. Singapore's secondary forests appear to accrete plant diversity very slowly, even if contiguous with primary forest areas. We conclude that remnant fragments of primary tropical forest, even of very small size, can play a major role in the conservation of tropical biodiversity. The patterns of extinction observed in Singapore indicate that coastal and estuarine sites are in greatest demand for development and therefore must be given high priority for conservation despite their somewhat lower biodiversity. Epiphyte and orchid diversity appear to be very good indicators of the degree of disturbance suffered by a habitat in the humid tropics. 相似文献

A feeding experiment was conducted on the pelagic stages of the tropical goatfish Upeneus tragula (family Mullidae) to examine how food quantity affects growth characteristics and potential success at settlement. Pelagic goatfish were collected from aggregation rafts 3 nautical miles west of Lizard Island on the northern Great Barrier Reef during December 1990. Three tanks in each of four feeding regimes were stocked with 25 pelagic goatfish between 20 and 23 mm standard length (SL). The four feeding regimes were: fed ad lib. (fed): fed once per day (f1pd); starved every second day (stld); starved for 3 d and re-fed (st3d). Fishes were fed 36 to 48 h old Artemia sp. nauplii (Ocean Star strain). Fish were removed from tanks when they underwent metamorphosis, changed pigmentation and settled to the bottom of the tanks. Morphology, muscle development, time taken to settle and biochemical condition were examined. Growth attributes of the treated fish were compared to fish which settled within 24 h of capture (field). All attributes examined were significantly influenced by the feeding treatments. Fish within the fed and st3d treatments were significantly larger and heavier than fish in the less well-fed treatments (f1pd, st1d). Similarly, concentrations of total lipid, carbohydrate and protein in the settled fish were significantly higher in the fed and st3d treatments compared with the st1d and f1pd treatments. For all these morphological and biochemical attributes the st1d and f1pd fish did not significantly differ from the field fishes, but did differ from the fed and st3d fishes. Water content was significantly higher in the f1pd, st1d and field fishes compared with the fed and st3d fish. Furthermore, the average time taken to settle followed the pattern: fed (14d)U. tragula are physiologically well suited to exploiting a patchy food source, and that food availability within the pelagic stages can have a major influence on the growth characteristics of this reef fish at settlement. The ramifications of this finding are discussed in relation to survival and success once fish have recruited to the reef population. 相似文献
