Sexual conflict over fertilizations: female bluethroats escape male paternity guards 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

Extra-pair copulations create a potential for sexual conflict in pair-bonding birds. Here we report an experimental study
of the bluethroat, Luscinia s. svecica, in which the throat ornament of males was blackened with Nyanzol D in order to reduce their sexual attractiveness and thus
increase the sexual conflict over fertilizations. In an earlier study, we showed that males blackened before pairing had a
lower success in attracting social mates than controls, whereas males blackened after pairing guarded their mates more intensely
and sang less than controls. Here we add behavioural data from one more year on males blackened after pairing and corroborate
our previous finding that the manipulation caused males to guard their mates more intensely and advertise less for additional
mates. Blackened males did not suffer more intrusions from neighbouring males than did controls. Paternity analyses of the
combined data set, using multilocus DNA fingerprinting and microsatellite typing, revealed that blackened males lost significantly
more paternity than controls. There was also a tendency for blackened males to show a lower success in achieving extra-pair
fertilizations. These results indicate that females have the upper hand in the sexual conflict over fertilizations, as females
paired with unattractive males can achieve more extra-pair paternity despite the greater constraint posed by the intensified
mate guarding. Still, within the blackened group, there were some indications that males guarding more intensely and singing
less had higher paternity than males guarding less and singing more, suggesting a marginal positive effect of guarding for
unattractive males. Male mate guarding must nevertheless be considered a best-of-a-bad-job strategy in this species.

Extrapair paternity in birds has been the focus of an increasing number of studies over the last decades. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge about extrapair copulation (EPC) behavior. In this study, we investigate whether female bluethroats (Luscinia s. svecica) with no extrapair offspring (EPO) in their broods really have been sexually monogamous or if they have copulated with extrapair males. We used an experimental approach to prevent transfer of sperm from the social male during copulation by fitting a rubber tube around the cloaca of randomly chosen males. If the females mated to these males do not participate in EPCs, they will produce infertile eggs, whereas females that copulate with extrapair males will only produce EPO. We found that 87% (n=15) of the experimental pairs compared to only 36% (n=51) of unmanipulated pairs produced EPO. Our result therefore suggests that females having no EPO may still have copulated with extrapair males and that promiscuity may be an obligate sexual strategy among bluethroat females.Communicated by S. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.) and 3 cryptogamic epiphytes were collected from and transplanted to 10 various locations in Denmark. The spatial and temporal variation in Pb and Cd concentrations of yarrow leaves and the cryptogams were determined. The physical structure of the plant parts, the mobility differences between the metals and the atmospheric fallout of metals at the growing site were believed to be important for the metal uptake. It was concluded, that yarrow leaves give a measure of the relative variation in deposition rates to surface of higher plants when collected at the end of a growth season, and that the geographic variation was revealed with similar accuracy by yarrow and the cryptogams. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis study investigated whether endorsement of personal values is associated with willingness to pay more for mobile phones with an environmental or social sustainability label. Participants were students in Sweden, Norway and Germany. A self-report inventory was used to measure willingness to pay and the importance attached to values of Schwartz’s circular model. In Sweden and Norway, participants were willing to pay, on average, 18% extra for a mobile phone with labels for environmental or social sustainability. In Germany, the corresponding share was 12%. To strive for self-enhancement values, that is, social status and prestige, as well as control and dominance over people and resources, was associated with a lower willingness to pay for mobile phones with labels for environmental or social sustainability in all three countries. Furthermore, women were willing to pay more than men for mobile phones with both kinds of sustainability labels. In Sweden and Norway, participants were, on average, willing to pay more for a mobile phone with a label for social sustainability compared to a mobile phone with a label for environmental sustainability. 相似文献

In birds, the number of sperm trapped between the perivitelline membranes around the ovum is an estimate of sperm numbers
present at the time and place of fertilisation in the female reproductive tract. Sperm numbers may vary among species and
between eggs in a clutch and can provide information about sperm utilisation and mechanisms of sperm competition. Here, we
describe patterns of variation in sperm numbers through the egg-laying sequence in three passerines in which extra-pair paternity
is common, but copulation behaviour differs. Sperm numbers showed no systematic change across the laying sequence in blue
tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), but decreased significantly with laying order in bluethroat (Luscinia svecica) and tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) clutches. This is consistent with observations that blue tits regularly copulate throughout the laying sequence, while bluethroats
stop mate guarding and tree swallows reduce their copulation frequency once the first egg is laid. Nevertheless, cases of
a sudden increase in sperm numbers in clutches of bluethroats and tree swallows suggest that successful inseminations also
occurred after laying started. In blue tits and bluethroats, sperm numbers were not higher on extra-pair sired eggs than on
eggs sired by the social male, suggesting that extra-pair copulations are not timed to the period of peak fertility for each
egg. More extra-pair offspring originated from eggs laid early in the sequence in blue tits, while there was no systematic
bias in bluethroats. Our results suggest that copulations during the laying sequence are predominantly performed by within-pair
males in our study species. 相似文献

Parental care plasticity is critical to understanding the ecological and evolutionary influence of nest predation on life history strategies. In birds, incubation imposes a trade-off between the requirements of females (i.e., food) and egg requirements (i.e., heat and protection from predators). However, studies on this topic are rare and usually restricted to species where the male feeds the incubating female, relaxing her incubation costs. Males and females can reduce their activity at the nest to avoid detection by predators. However, females could follow two alternative antipredator strategies: to delay their return to the nest to avoid attracting attention from the potential predator or to return to the nest as soon as possible to enhance nest concealment. In this study, we manipulated the perceived risk of nest predation of incubating common blackbirds (Turdus merula), a species without incubation feeding, to study female behavioral changes induced by nest predation risk. We show experimentally that female blackbirds can reduce their nest visits in the situation with higher nest predation risk. In addition, we confirm that females significantly delay their return to the nest in the presence of a nest predator, contradicting the nest concealment hypothesis. However, our results could be interpreted as a passive antipredator response (to minimize clues given to predators) or as an active antipredator response (to search for predators to expel them from their territories). 相似文献
