The effects of shock loads of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB); cadmium; 1-octanol; 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP); weakly complexed cyanide; pH 5, 9, and 11; and high ammonia levels on activated sludge biomass growth, respiration rate, flocculation, chemical oxygen demand removal, dewaterability, and settleability were studied. For all chemical shocks, except ammonia and pH, concentrations that caused 15, 25, and 50% respiration inhibition were used to provide a single pulse shock to sequencing batch reactor systems containing a nitrifying or non-nitrifying biomass. Cadmium and pH 11 shocks were most detrimental to all processes, followed by CDNB. The DNP and cyanide primarily affected respiration, while pH 5, pH 9, octanol, and ammonia did not affect the treatment process to a significant extent. A chemical source-process effect matrix is provided, which we believe will aid in the development of methods that prevent and/or attenuate the effects of toxic shock loads on activated sludge systems.  相似文献

Sexual selection models suggest that female choice is based on male traits that indicate their genetic or environmental condition, consequently enhancing her reproductive success by direct or indirect benefits. We investigated the relationship between male foot colour and offspring condition in the blue-footed booby, a socially monogamous seabird, with conspicuous and variably condition-dependent coloured feet that are selected by females. In a cross-fostering experiment, we found that chick condition was related to the foot colour of the foster father and, to some extent, to the foot colour of the genetic father; thus overall, the fathers sexual ornamentation (genetic and foster) explained 32% of variance of chick condition. These data suggest that foot colour, a dynamic sexually selected trait, is mostly a signal of parental contribution. In species in which males provide parental care, females may choose mates with higher parental ability. Overall, our data suggest that colourful integuments are honest signals of parental ability.Communicated by J. Graves  相似文献

A growing body of research explores workplace incivility, defined as low‐intensity deviant workplace behavior with an ambiguous intent to harm. In the 15 years since the theoretical introduction of the workplace incivility construct, research in this domain has taken off, albeit in a variety of directions. We review the extant body of research on workplace incivility and note the multitude of samples, sources, methodologies, and instrumentation used. In this review article, we provide an organized review of the extant body of work that encompasses three distinct types of incivility: experienced, witnessed, and instigated incivility. These three types of incivility serve as the foundation for a series of comprehensive models in which we integrate extant empirical research. Queen conch, Strombus gigas, is a commercially important gastropod that has been exploited throughout the Caribbean islands for thousands of years. Shell middens in the region are the physical record of a long-term fishery and their study can provide valuable information on selectivity patterns followed by fishermen and on resulting morphological shifts reflected by shells. In this study, we surveyed 27 middens located at Los Roques, Venezuela, to assess pre-Columbian and modern fisheries and measure their impact on local populations of queen conch. Pre-Columbian middens, covering a period of approximately 350 years of exploitation (1160–1540 A.D.), were mostly composed of adult shells (89%) and mean length of catch was estimated at 22.4 ± 0.2 cm (mean ± SE). A decrease in mean length of catch was observed throughout the modern fishery regime, estimated at 22.2 ± 0.3 cm in 1950–1971 and 20.0 ± 0.3 cm in 1990–1995. Higher proportions of immature individuals ranging from 48 to 67% were found in modern middens. Additionally, a decrease in mean length of mature individuals was detected throughout the modern fishery regime. The appearance of younger and smaller specimens is considered as a sign of heavy exploitation of local populations of queen conch during modern fisheries. Pre-Columbian middens in contrast, permitted to establish a relative baseline from which to compare values registered throughout modern times.  相似文献

The selection of the most appropriated technological solution to produce a certain mould able to competitively produce parts in polymeric materials is a multi-disciplinary activity, which integrates different knowledge fields and professional domains. The selection decision should capture not only the technical performance required for the mould to produce the final part in the expected quantities and intended quality, but also the economic issues and environmental impacts originated all along the mould life cycle. In this paper a Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) model is proposed to support the selection of alternative technological solutions through the integration of these three analysis dimensions underlined by the LCE approach. The model proposed has the novelty of integrating the three dimensions through the use of easy-to-read ternary diagrams allowing the identification of the “best domains” of each technological alternative. With the integrated analysis, the present model fosters the global comparison of alternatives according to different business scenarios and corporate strategies, supporting an informed decision-making process. The model was applied to a case study aiming the production of very small production volumes of polymeric parts. Two candidate technologies were evaluated: one involving a mould made of a spray metal shell backfilled with resin and aluminium powder and another based on the machining of aluminium.  相似文献

Industrial water conservation is an important adaptation to the effects of climate change. In addition to water conservation within individual plants, wastewater can be reused/recycled among different companies through inter-plant water integration (IPWI) schemes. Such schemes are based on the concept of industrial ecology and industrial symbiosis, and can be used to achieve greater water savings than when water conservation is implemented in individual companies separately. However, in IPWI, each participating company seeks to maximise its own benefits. In the absence of centralised authority dictating the terms of water integration schemes, conventional modelling techniques are not appropriate. This paper shows how a game theory-based approach can be used to analyse the interaction of participating companies in an eco-industrial park seeking to develop an IPWI scheme.  相似文献
