A survey was conducted in Uttar Pradesh to enlist the available exotic fish species in culture. The culture and feeding details of unofficially introduced Clarias gariepinus was collected from 419 ponds existing in rural areas of 23 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The data indicated that 32% ponds were culturing exotic fishes of which 79% cases are of monoculture of exotic African catfish. Feeding analysis of these exotic African catfish revealed that 7% cases subsist on natural pond feed while 29% cases are fed on slaughter house waste. In 32% cases of the exotic magur monoculture, chicken waste was given whereas 11% cases were recorded with fish waste feeding. The possible threats and environmental risks of such unauthorised and indiscreminate culture of exotic magur has been discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The morphological and reproductive development of gametophytes of Ecklonia maxima (Osbeck) Papenf. has been studied in vitro under a wide range of light and temperature conditions, and the results related to the natural environment over the range of the distribution of the species. Initial vegetative growth was light saturated at 20 E m-2 s-1, and maximal at 17.5° and 20°C. Most rapid egg production corresponded to low cell number of female gametophytes, and this process was light saturated at 60 E m-2 s-1, and optimised at 15° and 17.5°C. Cell number was also low at lower temperatures, with reduced fertility rates. Sub-saturating irradiances and supraoptimal temperatures caused females to become filamentous, producing many more cells, and reducing reproductive rates. The final egg production per female was, however, greater in these sub-optimal conditions, and this phenomenon is interpreted as an ecological adaptation which improves survival prospects in conditions prevailing at the fringes of the depth and geographical distribution of the species. The optimal, and maximum (22.5°C) temperatures for reproduction are far higher than those of northern hemisphere Laminarians. E. maxima is very much a warm temperate organism, and this could have implications for marine phytogeographical studies on the west coast of southern Africa.  相似文献

Fucus distichus L. was collected near Vancouver, Canada, in late fall and early winter, 1981. The effects of the forms of nitrogen (nitrate, ammonium or urea) and periodic exposure to air on growth, rhizoid development and nitrogen uptake in germlings was investigated. Gamete release, fertilization, germination and germling growth had no requirement for a specific form of nitrogen. Periodic exposure to air increased secondary rhizoid development twofold. Nitrate and ammonium uptake rates of the germlings were higher than for the mature thalli (20 to 40 times for nitrate and 8 times for ammonium), while the halfsaturation constant (K s) values for nitrate were similar (1 to 5 M). The germlings showed saturable uptake kinetics but the mature thalli did not. When germlings were exposed to air it caused a 70% decrease in nitrate uptake, but not change in ammonium uptake. Ammonium uptake in the mature thalli was proportional to the ambient ammonium concentration. Nitrate uptake in the mature thalli appeared to follow saturation kinetics at low nitrate concentrations, but showed a non-saturable component at concentrations greater than 10 M. Presence of ammonium inhibited nitrate uptake by the mature plants but not by the germlings.  相似文献

Nitrogen uptake by the kelp Ecklonia maxima Osbeck and phytoplankton was examined under different conditions of nutrient availability in a kelp bed off the Cape of Good Hope by measuring nutrient depletion in large plastic bags by the kelp and 15N uptake by phytoplankton. E. maxima took up nitrate and ammonia, but not urea, and showed only a weak preference for reduced nitrogen. Phytoplankton absorbed all three forms of nitrogen available, with a preference for ammonia and urea. Ambient nitrate concentration exhibited a marked and rapid decrease with northerly winds and an increase in response to offshore southerly winds. Nitrogen uptake by E. maxima was linearly related to ambient concentration and did not saturate even at nitrate concentrations >20g-at N l-1, resulting in a significantly higher tissue nitrogen content under upwelling conditions. Nitrate imported by upwelling was the chief source of nitrogen utilised within the kelp bed. Locally regenerated nitrogen (ammonia and urea) was calculated to contribute only ca 4% of total nitrogen uptake during upwelling and 30% during the relaxation or downwelling phase.  相似文献

From 1980 through 1983 sea urchin mass mortalities were at least 245 000 t. The habitat released to seaweed is expected to support a standing crop of 1.8 million tons and an annual production of 7 million tons. An extensive survey of 2 900 km of Nova Scotia shoreline revealed that 511 km2 of habitat (rock bottom less than 15 m deep) was available to seaweeds. Areas most exposed to ocean swells bordered 26% of the shoreline length but included 82% of the seaweed habitat. Before mass mortalities, seaweed refuges from sea urchin grazing included very sheltered habitats, very exposed habitats, and boulders set among shifting sand; however, these were less than 10% of the total habitat. In the 1 to 2 years following mass mortalities seaweed cover and occurrence increased significantly for all of five categories of wave exposure and for six of seven algal taxa respectively. In at least three locations the sea urchin population began to recover as a result of larval recruitment but in 1983 was again reduced by disease. Sea urchins appear to lack natural resistance to disease, at least at warm temperatures. In the laboratory all sea urchins collected from the Bay of Fundy, southern Nova Scotia, eastern Newfoundland, and an area recovering from mass mortalities died following exposure to diseased animals. Also, field mortalities included a wide variety of habitats. Interviews of Nova Scotia lobster fishermen revealed that sea urchin mass mortalities have probably occurred before in this century, but infrequently.  相似文献

Individuals of Mytilus edulis were collected from two populations in easterm Long Island Sound, USA, at 6 wk intervals from January 1982 to February 1983, and the hypothesis that nutrient availability controls the timing of gametogenic events in this mussel was tested using genetic variants at the Lap locus. In eastern Long Island Sound, Lap genotypes differ in the net rate of nitrogen accumulation. A highly significant difference in reproductive cycle among genotypes occurred in a population of M. edulis where Lap genotypes differ in nitrogen budget. Genotypes with lower rates of nutrient accumulation delayed the reproductive cycle by approximately six weeks relative to genotypes with high rates of nutrient accumulation. No significant difference in reproductive cycle occurred at a locality where Lap genotypes do not differ in nitrogen budget. These data indicate that nutritional status can exert significant control over the timing of gametogenesis in M. edulis. Differences in reproductive cycle among Lap genotypes provide a mechanism of non-random mating among genotypes which may result in heterozygote deficiencies at this locus.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on survival, growth, and photosynthesis were compared for two USA populations of Laminaria saccharina Lamour. One population was located in New York State, near the southern latitudinal boundary of the species in the western North Atlantic. This southern boundary population was exposed to ambient temperatures 20°C for about 6 wk each summer. The second population was located in Maine, toward the center of the latitudinal range of the species, and was rarely exposed to temperatures>17°C. sporophytes from the New York (NY) population exhibited greater tolerance of high temperature than plants from the Maine (ME) site. Juvenile sporophytes from the two sites had similar rates of survivorship and growth at temperatures below 20°C, but showed different responses at 20°C in laboratory experiments. NY plants survived and grew for 6 wk at 20°C. ME plants showed negative growth during wk 2 and 100% mortality during wk 3. NY and ME plants held in situ at the NY site during June to September, 1985, also exhibited differential survivorship when ambient temperatures exceeded 20°C. Results of photosynthesis and dark respiration measurements on NY and ME plants grown at various temperatures suggested that the high-temperature tolerance of NY plants was attributable to their ability to maintain positive daily net C-fixation at 20°C. The high-temperature tolerance of the NY plants appeared to be due to genetic adaptation and is probably crucial to the persistence of the species near its southern boundary.  相似文献

Films of bacteria on solid substrata can positively or negatively influence the attachment of marine invertebrate larvae. Effects of marine bacteria on the attachment of cypris larvae of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin were examined in the laboratory. Bacteria, grown to mid-exponential phase and allowed to adsorb irreversibly to polystyrene petri dishes, attached in densities of 107 cells cm-2. Assays (22h) were used to compare the effects of adsorbed cells of 18 different bacterial species on larval barnacle attachment. Most of the adsorbed bacteria either inhibited or had no effect on larval attachment compared to clean surfaces. Experiments testing the effect of larval age on barnacle attachment were conducted with six species of bacteria and showed that older larvae attached in higher percentages to clean surfaces and that bacterial films generally inhibited larval attaschment. Both the species of bacteria and the in situ age of the adsorbed bacteria affected barnacle attachment response: older films of Deleya (Pseudomonas) marina were more inhibitory. Bacterial extracellular materials may be involved in the inhibitory process.  相似文献

The copepod Acartia tonsa displayed nearly two-fold higher ingestion rates on faster-growing cells of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii compared to ingestion rates on slower-growing cells of that species at the same cell concentration. Ingestion rates on slow-growing cells were also enhanced by the addition of cell-free aliquots of algal exudate to the experimental feeding chambers. In addition, the faster-growing algal cells were selectively ingested by the copepod when the two cell types were mixed together in different proportions, indicating that physiological differences between growing cells are a critical factor in the food detection/selection process of zooplankton. Consideration of cell carbon, nitrogen, and protein composition suggests that the copepods are maximizing nitrogenous ingestion (total protein and/or nitrogen). Selectivity for cells with higher protein content results in a higher daily protein ration, even if the selection process results in a decreased rate of ingestion in mixtures of cell types.  相似文献

Nitrogen regeneration by two surf zone mysids,Mesopodopsis slabberi andGastrosaccus psammodytes, was determined under laboratory conditions. The mysids were collected from the lower Sundays River estuary, South Africa, from early spring 1984 to late summer 1985. The forms of nitrogen excreted and the effects of mass, temperature and feeding on excretion rate were determined for each species at three experimental temperatures. Comparison of the forms of nitrogen excreted revealed only slight differences between species, with ammonia the major form and urea and amino acids the secondary excretory products in both cases. Mass significantly influenced the rate of ammonia excretion at all experimental temperatures, with no significant difference in slope (common b=0.602) detected between species. During the day sediment deprivation resulted in a 15% and 20% increase in mean ammonia excretion rates of juvenile and adultG. psammodytes respectively, whereas no significant differences were found at night. The mean ammonia excretion rates of fedM. slabberi andG. psammodytes were 2 and 2.5 times higher than starved excretion rates, respectively.G. psammodytes andM. slabberi recycle 139 to 150 g N per running meter of surf zone per year and 1 007 to 1 208 g N m-1 yr-1, respectively. Togehter this constitutes 10% of total phytoplankton nitrogen requirements in the surf zone.  相似文献
