Traunsee, a 191 m deep Alpine lake in Austria, is affected by industrial tailings from the soda and salt mining industries since 1883. In 1998 littoral water chloride concentrations ranged between 40 and 85 mg L-1 and the highest conductivity was 560 S cm-1, which is almost double as high as the values reported from the two nearby reference lakes. Chloride concentrations increased towards the location of the industrial salt and soda emission into the lake. Analogously to the chloride gradient, the epilithic littoral diatom flora changes towards the waste inlet. Shifts in the species percentages towards the emission source, a high percentage of taxa with large conductivity tolerances, the presence of a small Achnanthes minutissima Kützing morphotype, and occurrences of taxa focused at habitats of higher electrolyte content, indicate subtle impacts on the epilithic diatom flora. An analysis of the seasonal succession of the epilithic diatoms at the waste inlet compared to a lake intern reference site, reveals that only during the late summer period in 1998 the diatom assemblage at the waste inlet became significantly different, indicating seasonally restricted effects of the industrial emissions. 相似文献

Neonatal hemochromatosis (NH) is a rare disorder but the most common cause of acute liver failure in neonates. NH is characterized by severe hepatic injury and iron overload and is associated with high perinatal mortality and morbidity rates. NH is often preceded by oligohydramnios and intrauterine growth restriction, suggesting an important impact of NH during fetal life. Stillbirth and prematurity are not uncommon. During the last decade, major discoveries on the etiology of NH have radically changed the management and outcome of this disease. NH is now regarded as an alloimmune disease and is, as such, often referred to as gestational alloimmune liver disease. Antenatal treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins starting at 14 weeks' gestation has been shown to prevent the development of NH in subsequent pregnancies. Postnatal treatment, previously based on the use of anti-oxidants and chelation therapy, has now successfully been replaced by exchange transfusions and intravenous immunoglobulins substitution. Roads function as prime habitats and corridors for invasive plant species. Yet despite the diversity of road types, there
is little research on the influence of these types on the spread of invaders. Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), a plant producing large amounts of allergenic pollen, was selected as a species model for examining the impact of road
type on the spread of invasive plants. We examined this relationship in an agricultural region of Quebec, Canada. We mapped
plant distribution along different road types, and constructed a model of species presence. Common ragweed was found in almost
all sampling sites located along regional (97%) and local paved (81%) roads. However, verges of unpaved local roads were rarely
(13%) colonized by the plant. A model (53% of variance explained), constructed with only four variables (paved regional roads,
paved local roads, recently mown road verges, forest cover), correctly predicted (success rate: 89%) the spatial distribution
of common ragweed. Results support the hypothesis that attributes associated with paved roads strongly favour the spread of
an opportunistic invasive plant species. Specifically, larger verges and greater disturbance associated with higher traffic
volume create propitious conditions for common ragweed. To date, emphasis has been placed on controlling the plant in agricultural
fields, even though roadsides are probably a much larger seed source. Strategies for controlling the weed along roads have
only focused on major highways, even though the considerable populations along local roads also contribute to the production
