We characterized the differences in warm-season weekday and weekend aerosol conditions and cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes (1995–2008) for an 80,000 square kilometer region around Atlanta, Georgia, a city of 5.5 million in the humid subtropics of the southeastern United States. An integration of distance-based multivariate techniques (hierarchical agglomerative clustering, multiresponse permutation procedures, fuzzy kappa statistics, and Mantel tests) indicated a greater concentration of CG flash activity within a 100 km radius around Atlanta under weekday aerosol concentrations. On weekends, these effects contracted toward the city. This minimized any weekly anthropogenic cycle over the more densely populated urban center even though this location had a higher flash density, a higher percentage of days with flashes, and stronger peak currents over the course of a week compared to the surrounding region. The sharper contrasts in weekday and weekend lightning regime developed outside the perimeter of the city over nonurban land uses. Here, lightning on weekend and weekdays differed more in its density, frequency, polarity, and peak current. Across the full extent of the study region, weekday peak currents were stronger and flash days more frequent, suggesting that weekly CG lightning signals have a regional component not tied to a single city source. We integrate these findings in a conceptual model that illustrates the dependency of weekly anthropogenic weather signals on spatial and temporal extent. 相似文献

Summary An individual's rank in a dominance hierarchy is often based on size or weight, especially in insects. Foundresses of the social wasp, Polistes annularis, vary greatly in size as measured by wing length, dry weight, fat weight, and residue weight after fat has been extracted. Females that emerged from the same nest are much more similar in size to each other than they are to females that emerged from other nests. Within nests however queens are usually larger than their subordinates. Queens that emerged from one nest may be smaller than subordinates that emerged from another nest. We found no evidence of a group of females that are forced into being subordinates because of inadequate feeding as larvae. Females are also probably not attempting to begin new nests with females as different in size as possible from themselves since means and variances of winglength of females on new nests do not differ from those of all females emerging from that natal nest. 相似文献

Thirty samples of soil were taken at 50-m intersections on a grid pattern over an area of 250 x 200 m within a single field with nominally uniform soil characteristics. Incubations of isoproturon (3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) under standard conditions (15 degrees C; -33 kPa soil water potential) indicated considerable variation in degradation rate of the herbicide, with the time to 50% loss (DT50) varying from 6.5 to 30 days. The kinetics of degradation also varied between the sub-samples of soil. In many of them, there was an exponential decline in isoproturon residues; in others, exponential loss was followed by more rapid rates of decline; in a few soil samples, rapid rates of loss began shortly after the start of the incubations. In more detailed studies with soils from a smaller number of sub-sites (20), measurements were again made of isoproturon degradation rate, and the soils were analysed for organic matter content, pH, and nutrient status (N, P, K). Measurements were also made of isoproturon adsorption by the soils and of soil microbial biomass. Patterns of microbial metabolism were assessed using 95 substrates in Biolog GN plates. Soils showing rapid biodegradation were generally of higher pH and contained more available potassium than those showing slower degradation rates. They also had a larger microbial biomass and greater microbial metabolic diversity as determined by substrate utilisation on Biolog GN plates. The implications of the results for the efficacy and environmental behaviour of isoproturon are discussed. 相似文献

Carolina bays are freshwater wetlands that serve as important feeding habitats for the endangered wood stork (Mycteria americana). Water levels in these bays fluctuate greatly and tend to be acidic and rich in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), factors that favor mercury (Hg) methylation and bioaccumulation in fish. To assess potential risks to wood storks consuming mercury contaminated fish in bays, we sampled fish from 10 bays on the Savannah River Site (SRS), South Carolina, an area with documented use by wood storks. Whole body mercury concentrations in 258 fishes of three species (Erimyzon sucetta, Acantharchuspomotis and Esox americanus) commonly consumed by wood storks were determined. Risk factors for nestlings and free-ranging adults were calculated using published no and lowest observable adverse effect concentration (NOAEC and LOAEC) values for birds. Fish from higher trophic levels and those from wetlands with relatively shallow maximum depths and fluctuating water levels were more likely to exceed NOAEC and LOAEC values. Calculation of exposure rates of nestling wood storks indicated they are at highest risk during the first 10 days of the nestling period. These calculations suggest that there is potential concern for wood storks foraging in relatively shallow bays with fluctuating water levels, even though there is no obvious local source of mercury to these wetlands. 相似文献

The slurry sampling technique has been applied for the determination of arsenic, cadmium and lead in sidestream cigarette smoke condensate (SS CSC) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The smoke collection system consists of a "fishtail" chimney in conjunction with an impaction trap and a mixed cellulose ester (MCE) backup filter for the SS CSC collection. The smoke condensates, collected at three different regions of the system (i.e. the inner wall of the chimney, the impaction trap and the MCE filter), were individually prepared and analyzed and showed that about 70 and 20% of Cd and Pb, respectively, were trapped by the impaction trap and the MCE filter with less than 5% trapped by the chimney. In contrast, about 60% of As was trapped by the impactor and a relatively high percentage of As, about 30%, was deposited onto the inner wall of the chimney. The uneven distribution of trace metals at each collection stage strongly suggested that the composition of smoke aerosol and the associated physical form of the analytes may be different. The yields of As, Cd and Pb for the sidestream cigarette smoke of the 1R4F reference cigarette were 29.5 +/- 2.4, 421 +/- 6.6 and 46.4 +/- 0.9 ng cigarette(-1)(n= 3) respectively, when the cigarette was smoked according to the smoking regime: 45 mL puff volume of 2-s puff duration at an interval of 30 s with 50% ventilation holes covered. The analytical results for the slurry sampling technique were also compared with other sample preparation techniques and show good agreement. 相似文献

A pilot-scale horizontal flow constructed wetland (HFCW) system planted with common reed (Phragmites sp.) was constructed to study how hydraulic loading rate (HLR), aspect ratio, water depth, and granular medium affect to the fate of several organic matter degradation intermediates namely, acetic acid (HAc), isovaleric acid (Isoval), and dimethylsulfide (DMS). ANOVA statistical analysis performed on the data set of 8 months of operation shows that the HLR and the water depth are two major factors that control the performance of HFCWs for the target analytes. A clear difference in the HFCW effluent concentrations was obtained according to water depth. Effluents of the shallow water depth contained lower DMS (1.05-1.44 microg l-1), HAc (7.91-10.9 mg l-1), and Isoval (0.11-0.15 mg l-1) concentrations than the deeper beds (DMS: 1.68-2.40 microg l-1; HAc: 9.29-14.4 mg l-1, and Isoval: 0.20-0.31 mg l-1). Such differences could be accounted to the different formation and consumption rates of the organic matter degradation intermediates, which is related with the redox potentials (E). Indeed, it could lead to different biochemical reactions of organic matter degradation according with the E value. HLR has a statistically significant influence on the effluent HAc, Isoval, and DMS concentrations. Seasonal variability of effluent HAc concentration shows that it is independent on the HAc loading. While the loading showed no seasonal pattern, the removal efficiency was clearly higher in cold months, which suggests a predominant internal production of HAc in HFCWs in the warm season from the accumulated organic particulate matter. Estimates of C and N loss by gasification during a wildfire in a Jeffrey pine (Pinus Jeffreyii [Grev. and Balf.]) forest in Little Valley, Nevada are compared to potential losses in more mesic forests in the Integrated Forest Study (IFS). In Little Valley, the fire consumed the forest floor, foliage, and an unknown amount of soil organic matter, but little standing large woody material. On an ecosystem level, the fire consumed approximately equal percentages of C and N (12 and 9%, respectively), but a considerably greater proportion of aboveground N (71%) than C (21%). Salvage logging was the major factor in loss, and C lost from the site will not be replenished until forest vegetation is established and succeeds the current shrub vegetation. N2 fixation by Ceanothus velutinus [Dougl.] in the post-fire shrub vegetation appears to have more than made up for N lost by gasification in the fire over the first 16 yr, and may result in long-term increases in C stocks once forest vegetation takes over the site. N loss from the fire equaled > 1,000 years of atmospheric N deposition and > 10,000 years of N leaching at current rates. Calculations of C and N losses from theoretical wildfires in the IFS sites show similar patterns to those in Little Valley. Calculated losses of N in most of the IFS sites would equal many centuries of leaching. Conceptual models of biogeochemical cycling in forests need to include episodic events such as fire. 相似文献
