For the investigation of climatic history for the last 65 million years, several holes were drilled in 1990 on the Ontong Java Plateau by the drilling vessel Joides Resolution, under the auspices of the international Ocean Drilling Program. The Ontong Java Plateau is the largest basalt plateau on earth, and was formed in the Middle Cretaceous. From the core material, seismic reflectors from the overlying sediments can be associated with specific, climate-related oceanic events. For the cyclic sediments of the last 2 million years, high-resolution isotope curves were generated which depict the two dominant Milankovitch cycles with periods of 100 000 and 41000 years.  相似文献

Lessons learned from more than 150 years of public health research and intervention can provide insights to guide public health professionals and institutions as they design and implement specific strategies, policies, and measures to increase resilience to climate variability and change. This paper identifies both some modifications to public health systems that may enhance adaptive capacity, and lessons drawn from the history of managing environmental and other threats in the public health sector that may have relevance for other sectors as they design approaches to increase their adaptive capacity to more effectively cope with climate variability and change. A three months old clone of 76 asexually produced F2 Heterostegina depressa D'Obbigny, 1826 (Foraminifera) was subdivided into two groups which were cultivated for 5 months, one at 300 lux, the other at 600 lux. Nourishment was provided by symbiotic photosynthesizing algae. The 300-lux group added 1 whorl, the 600-lux group added 1/2 a whorl during the experiment, suggesting that the first group was nearer the optimum for growth than the second. Growth rates reacted but slowly to changes in environmental conditions. Also, specimens within the same culture dish showed great differences in response. In the 600-lux group, many specimens ceased to grow entirely, while others continued. Cessation of growth tends to produce a rounded test shape, by filling-in of the apertural angle, while rapid growth tends to be correlated with flaring tests (i.e., tests with an open spiral). In addition, there is a trend toward increased flaring during normal ontogenetic development. Shell damage is greater in rapidly growing individuals; walls are apparently thicker in slowly growing and in resting individuals. Ecological interpretation of morphological characteristics is hampered by: (1) a lag effect between growth response and environmental change; (2) slowing or termination of growth under stressful conditions with corresponding minor changes in morphology; (3) great variation in response between sibling individuals within the same culture dish; (4) aging effects.  相似文献

Permanent vegetation plots were established on mixed overburden and topsoiled overburden on a lignite test pit in eastern Texas in 1982. Vegetative treatments included two grass-legume treatments [switchgrass (panicum virgattun) — sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) — subterrancan elover (Trifolitun subterranean) and litte bluestem (Schizachyriun scoparium) — sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) — Illinois hundleflower (Dessmanthus illinoiensis)] and three monocultures [Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon), bahia grass (paspalum notatum) and yellow Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans)]. Water was applied to the 0.5m2 plots using a sprinklertype rainfall simulator and quality of runoff was determined for each plot. Parameters analyzed included: settleable solids, total filterable solids, sediment production, infiltration rate, nitrites, nitrates, total iron and total manganese. Topsoiling significantly increased inliltration and significantly decreased filterable sediments, sediment production and settleable solids. The hydrologie qualities of the switchgrass-sideoats grama-subterranean elover mixture coincided closely with those of the Coastal bermudagrass monoculture.  相似文献

Sexually selected traits that act as signals of quality often display some degree of condition dependence. In birds, condition dependence of ornamental plumage is often mediated by production costs related to acquisition or allocation of dietary resources. White plumage ornaments, however, have often been assumed to be inexpensive because their production requires neither pigment nor specialized feather structure. In male dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), the size of a white patch on the tail contributes to attractiveness and mating success. Using captive males, we examined the effects of diet quality on the size and brightness of the tail-white patch. After removing four tail feathers to induce replacement, we maintained subjects on a subsistence (low-protein) or enriched (high-protein) diet while induced feathers grew. Birds that received an enriched diet grew their feathers more quickly and grew larger, brighter white patches. Feather growth rate was positively correlated with the increase in the size of the tail-white patch, a relationship that was stronger in the subsistence diet group. However, within diet treatments, faster-grown feathers were slightly duller. Taken together, these results suggest that variation in diet quality may lead to condition-dependent expression of tail white and that condition dependence may be stronger in more stressful environments. We suggest a mechanism by which increased feather growth rate may lead to an increase in the size of the tail-white patch and discuss potential trade-offs between signal size and brightness.  相似文献

The association between particulate pollution and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality is well established. While the cardiovascular effects of nationally regulated criteria pollutants (e.g., fine particulate matter [PM2.5] and nitrogen dioxide) have been well documented, there are fewer studies on particulate pollutants that are more specific for traffic, such as black carbon (BC) and particle number (PN). In this paper, we synthesized studies conducted in the Greater Boston Area on cardiovascular health effects of traffic exposure, specifically defined by BC or PN exposure or proximity to major roadways. Large cohort studies demonstrate that exposure to traffic-related particles adversely affect cardiac autonomic function, increase systemic cytokine-mediated inflammation and pro-thrombotic activity, and elevate the risk of hypertension and ischemic stroke. Key patterns emerged when directly comparing studies with overlapping exposure metrics and population cohorts. Most notably, cardiovascular risk estimates of PN and BC exposures were larger in magnitude or more often statistically significant compared to those of PM2.5 exposures. Across multiple exposure metrics (e.g., short-term vs. long-term; observed vs. modeled) and different population cohorts (e.g., elderly, individuals with co-morbidities, young healthy individuals), there is compelling evidence that BC and PN represent traffic-related particles that are especially harmful to cardiovascular health. Further research is needed to validate these findings in other geographic locations, characterize exposure errors associated with using monitored and modeled traffic pollutant levels, and elucidate pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular effects of traffic-related particulate pollutants.

Implications: Traffic emissions are an important source of particles harmful to cardiovascular health. Traffic-related particles, specifically BC and PN, adversely affect cardiac autonomic function, increase systemic inflammation and thrombotic activity, elevate BP, and increase the risk of ischemic stroke. There is evidence that BC and PN are associated with greater cardiovascular risk compared to PM2.5. Further research is needed to elucidate other health effects of traffic-related particles and assess the feasibility of regulating BC and PN or their regional and local sources.  相似文献

A set of 62 unhatched eggs was collected from six different predatory bird species throughout Norway after incubation period was completed. They were analysed for PBDE, PBB, TBBP A and naturally occurring halogenated compounds. BDE 47, 99 and 153 were the dominating congeners, with species dependent PBDE patterns. BDE 153 was observed as the most abundant congener in eggs of peregrine falcon, golden eagle and merlin. The highest PBDE level (sum of nine congeners) was found in eggs of white-tailed sea eagle with up to 800ng/gww (median sumPBDE: 184ng/gww), followed by eggs of peregrine falcon and osprey (median sumPBDE: 155 and 105ng/gww, respectively). Golden eagle eggs showed the lowest concentration of all species (median sumPBDE: 3ng/gww). The levels in the peregrine falcon are similar to those found earlier in the Baltic region [Lindberg, P., Sellstrom, U., Haggberg, L., de Wit, C.A., 2004. Higher brominated diphenyl ethers and hexabromocyclododecane found in eggs of peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) breeding in Sweden. Environmental Science & Technology. 38 (1), 93-96]. The differences between species are not fully explainable, due to lack of data from the major food species. BB 101 and 153 were found in eggs of all investigated bird species. Especially in samples of white-tailed sea eagle, peregrine falcon and goshawk additional unknown penta- and hexabrominated biphenyls were detected. TBBP A was detected in all of eight eggs analysed sampled from four different bird of prey species. The naturally occurring halogenated compounds Q1, the dibromotrichloro monoterpene MHC-1, and 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA) were detected in all of seven analysed samples except for one peregrine falcon egg.  相似文献
