Gene flow among vestimentiferan tube worm (Riftia pachyptila) populations from hydrothermal vents of the eastern Pacific 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Allozyme data are presented for six discrete populations of the giant hydrothermal vent tube worm Riftia pachyptila Jones, 1981 collected throughout the species' known range along mid-ocean spreading ridges of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Contrary to an earlier report, levels of genetic variation are relatively high in this species. Estimates of gene flow based on F-statistics revealed that dispersal throughout the surveyed region is sufficiently high to counter random processes that would lead to losses of genetic diversity and significant population differentiation. R. pachyptila, like other species of tube worms, displays considerable morphologic variation among populations, but this diversity is not reflected in allozyme variation. Vestimentifera, in general, appear to show extensive phenotypic plasticity. In the light of the available genetic data, caution is warranted when making inferences about the taxonomic status of collections based on morphological variation alone. A general decrease in estimated rates of gene flow between geographically more distant populations supports the hypothesis that dispersal in this species follows a stepping-stone model, with exchange between neighboring populations in great excess of long-distance dispersal. High levels of gene flow have been recorded in a variety of vent fauna and may be a prerequisite for success of species found in the ephemeral habitats associated with regions of sea-floor hydrothermal activity. 相似文献

We have isolated a cDNA clone of mRNA for the cytochrome P450 from a 3-methylcholanthrene (MC)-treated red sea bream,Pagrus major, using a cDNA fragment for rat P4501A2 as a probe. The cloned cDNA is ca. 1.8 kb long and contains an open reading frame of 1545 nucleotides for polypeptides of 515 amino acids. The deduced N-terminal amino acid sequence of the cDNA is very similar to that for purified cytochrome P450 protein from the marine fish scup, which was reported previously (Klotz et al. 1983). A conserved amino acid sequence containing a putative heme-binding cysteine is present in the equivalent position proximate to the C-terminus of the molecules. The deduced amino acid sequence shows more than 50% positional identity with known members of the mammalian aromatic hydrocarbon-inducible P450 family. RNA blot analysis indicates that P450 mRNA (s) is expressed in the liver, kidney, gill and gut of the MC-treatedP. major. 相似文献

The life history patterns of Calanus marshallae Frost, C. pacificus Brodsky, and Metridia lucens Boeck were determined in Dabob Bay, Washington, USA, during 1973 and October 1981–September 1982. C. marshallae emerged from diapause and moulted to adults in January–February. One major generation was observed, having been produced mainly during early to mid-March. Most surviving individuals spawned in March, arrested development at the C5 stage, and were in diapause by late May. However, some individuals developed to adults by late April and produced a very minor second generation. C. pacificus emerged from diapause and moulted to adults in February–March. The first generation produced during the spring lagged slightly behind the C. marshallae generation. C. pacificus produced two additional generations, one in late spring and one in the fall. The production of the three generations coincided with or closely followed phytoplankton blooms. Some C. pacificus arrested development at the C5 stage and entered diapause during the summer, but the majority of the population did not do so until fall. M. lucens did not appear to enter a diapause state. The fall and winter population was chiefly adult females which mostly remained at depth and were reproductively immature. Nevertheless, naupliar M. lucens were found on all sampling dates, indicating that reproduction never ceased as it did for the two Calanus species. M. lucens produced generations in late winter/early spring, late spring, and late summer/early fall. Interspecific comparisons between the life histories observed in Dabob Bay and intraspecific comparisons between the life histories in Dabob Bay and other locations are made. The advantages or disadvantages conferred to the copepods by their differing life histories are also discussed. 相似文献

The genetic population structure of the recently introduced Asian clam, Potamocorbula amurensis, in San Francisco Bay was described using starch gel electrophoresis at eight presumptive loci. Specimens were taken from five environmentally distinct sites located throughout the bay. The population maintains a high degree of genetic variation, with a mean heterozygosity of 0.295, a mean polymorphism of 0.75, and an average of 3.70 alleles per locus. The population is genetically homogeneous, as evidenced from genetic distance values and F-statistics. However, heterogeneity of populations was indicated from a contingency chi-square test. Significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and heterozygote deficiencies were found at the Lap-1 locus for all populations and at the Lap-2 locus for a single population. High levels of variability could represent a universal characteristic of invading species, the levels of variability in the source population(s), and/or the dynamics of the introduction. Lack of differentiation between subpopulations may be due to the immaturity of the San Francisco Bay population, the general purpose phenotype genetic strategy of the species, high rates of gene flow in the population, and/or the selective neutrality of the loci investigated. 相似文献

Extinctions are normal biological phenomena. Both mass extinctions in geological time and local extinctions in ecological time are well documented, but rates of extinction have increased in recent years—especially in vertebrates, including amphibians—as illustrated by recent reports of their population declines and range reductions. We suggest that long-term population data are necessary for rigorously evaluating the significance of the amphibian declines. Due to the physiological constraints, relatively low mobility, and site fidelity of amphibians, we suggest that many amphibian populations may be unable to recolonize areas after local extinction. 相似文献

In this study we aimed to combine knowledge of the ecophysiology and genetics of European beech to assess the potential of this species to adapt to environmental change. Therefore, we performed field and experimental studies on the genetic and ecophysiological functioning of beech. This information was integrated through a coupled genetic–ecophysiological model for individual trees that was parameterized with information derived from our own studies or from the literature. Using the model, we evaluated the adaptive response of beech stands in two ways: firstly, through sensitivity analyses (of initial genetic diversity, pollen dispersal distance, heritability of selected phenotypic traits, and forest management, representing disturbances) and secondly, through the evaluation of the responses of phenotypic traits and their genetic diversity to four management regimes applied to 10 study plots distributed over Western Europe. The model results indicate that the interval between recruitment events strongly affects the rate of adaptive response, because selection is most severe during the early stages of forest development. Forest management regimes largely determine recruitment intervals and thereby the potential for adaptive responses. Forest management regimes also determine the number of mother trees that contribute to the next generation and thereby the genetic variation that is maintained. Consequently, undisturbed forests maintain the largest amount of genetic variation, as recruitment intervals approach the longevity of trees and many mother trees contribute to the next generation. However, undisturbed forests have the slowest adaptive response, for the same reasons.Gene flow through pollen dispersal may compensate for the loss in genetic diversity brought about by selection. The sensitivity analysis showed that the total genetic diversity of a 2 ha stand is not affected by gene flow if the pollen distance distribution is varied from highly left-skewed to almost flat. However, a stand with a prevailing short-distance gene flow has a more pronounced spatial genetic structure than stands with equal short- and long-distance gene flows. The build-up of a spatial genetic structure is also strongly determined by the recruitment interval. Overall, the modelling results indicate that European beech has high adaptive potential to environmental change if recruitment intervals are short and many mother trees contribute to the next generation.The findings have two implications for modelling studies on the impacts of climate change on forests. Firstly: it cannot be taken for granted that parameter values remain constant over a time horizon of even a few generations – this is particularly important for threshold values subject to strong selection, like budburst, frost hardiness, drought tolerance, as used in species area models. Secondly: forest management should be taken into account in future assessments, as management affects the rate of adaptive response and thereby the response on trees and forests to environmental change, and because few forests are unmanaged. Age-specific information on individual octopus reproductive development and investment from wild populations has until recently
been unobtainable. Using daily-formed increments within stylets (internal shells) the individual ages of 503 wild Octopus pallidus were determined. In addition, detailed reproductive information was collected for each of the aged octopus, along with reproductive
data for an additional 925 octopus. All of the octopus were collected from Bass Strait waters in south-eastern Australia from
November 2004 to November 2006. This information was used to investigate seasonal trends in reproductive scheduling and investment,
fecundity and egg size. Maturation in O. pallidus primarily depends on size with little relationship to age and is highly variable between genders, with females >350 days
still maturing in comparison to all males >142 days being mature. Size at 50% maturity for females was approximately 473 g,
which is considerably larger than male 100% maturity at <250 g. This indicates that for females at least, maturity does not
necessarily come with age. Seasonal scheduling in reproductive investment between genders revealed an optimal spawning period
between late summer and early autumn. These results reinforce the view that individual growth and maturity is highly variable

Ostracods are small crustaceans found in aquatic habitats and the present paper deals with the role of water quality index on their population diversity and seasonal fluctuations in the four lakes of Mysore city The present investigation was carried out from July 2004 to June 2005. The study revealed highest water quality index and population density of ostracods during summer and least during winter Dalvoi lake recorded higher waterquality index (125.04), population density (60 l(-1)) but lower species diversity (2 species) of ostracods, whereas Kamana lake recorded lowest water quality index (63.49), population density (40 l(-1)) and highest species diversity (6 species) of ostracods. Theprevalence and seasonal variation of bacterial indicators of faecal pollution such as total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli and faecal streptococci were investigated in samples of water and beach sand from the four fish landing centres of Thoothukudi. Further the samples were screened for Salmonella to study the reliability of faecal indicator bacteria as an index of human pathogenic bacteria. Total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli were isolated from all four landing centres from undetectable to the maximum detectable level of over Most Probable Number 140 throughout the year with no obvious seasonal variation. Faecal streptococci were also detected in most samples. There was no discernable relationship between faecal indicators and physical parameters. The relationship between faecal indicators and Salmonella was not significant (p > 0.05). The results showed that the coastal waters along Thoothukudi is polluted and presents a potential risk to public for recreational and fishing activities. 相似文献
