Final landfill covers are highly engineered to prevent methane release into the atmosphere. However, methane production begins soon after waste placement and is an unaddressed source of emissions. The methane oxidation capacity of methanotrophs embedded in a “bio-tarp” was investigated as a means to mitigate methane release from open landfill cells. The bio-tarp would also serve as an alternative daily cover during routine landfill operation.Evaluations of nine synthetic geotextiles identified two that would likely be suitable bio-tarp components. Pilot tarp prototypes were tested in continuous flow systems simulating landfill gas conditions. Multilayered bio-tarp prototypes consisting of alternating layers of the two geotextiles were found to remove 16% of the methane flowing through the bio-tarp. The addition of landfill cover soil, compost, or shale amendments to the bio-tarp increased the methane removal up to 32%. With evidence of methane removal in a laboratory bioreactor, prototypes were evaluated at a local landfill using flux chambers installed atop intermediate cover at a landfill. The multilayered bio-tarp and amended bio-tarp configurations were all found to decrease landfill methane flux; however, the performance efficacy of bio-tarps was not significantly different from controls without methanotrophs. Because highly variable methane fluxes at the field site likely confounded the test results, repeat field testing is recommended under more controlled flux conditions.  相似文献

Mechanical blending of contaminated soil with amendments has recently reemerged as an important treatment technology. From its original application using large‐diameter augers in the early 1990s to the current use of rotary drum blenders, soil blending is being used as an alternative to other remediation technologies like amendment injection and soil vapor and groundwater extraction. Shallow (approximately 10 m below ground surface [bgs] or less) soil blending also offers an alternative to excavation and disposal. Soil blending has been used to remediate a site with various contaminants including, but not limited to, chlorinated solvents, petroleum, and metals. The types of soils susceptible to soil blending vary from sands and gravels to silts and clays to fractured rock and combinations of all of these. The types of amendments blended include oxidants, reducing agents, biological enhancements, and stabilizing amendments. Soil blending systems deliver the power to the mixing head to adequately mix the soil and amendment to enhance remediation effectiveness. Since long‐term contamination is often a result of heterogeneously distributed residual contaminant in localized source zones that are difficult to access, the typical aim of soil blending is to homogenize the soil while effectively distributing amendment to these zones made accessible by blending. By effectively homogenizing the soil, however, soil blending will increase the void ratio and disrupt the shear strength and bearing capacity of the soil so an important component of a soil blending technology is proper recovery of these geotechnical parameters. This can be achieved by using well‐known soil improvement techniques such as amending all or a portion of the blended area with Portland cement or lime. Several case studies of soil blending treatments of different contaminants and amendments in various soil types are provided.  相似文献

Two contrasting compost windrows were monitored for various physical, chemical and microbiological parameters for a period of 106 days. The different input materials and management practises gave rise to different temperature, moisture, and oxygen consumption profiles as composting proceeded. However, despite the different composting conditions, the specific respiratory activity, as determined by oxygen consumption per bacterial cell, was remarkably similar for both windrows. Further investigations into diversity dynamics were done through DGGE and cloning and sequencing of bacterial 16S rDNA PCR products. Although sequence analysis showed differing bacterial communities across time and between the different windrows, similarities in the progression were noted. The majority of sequences recovered from the first sampling period (day 1) were highly similar to previously isolated organisms. The clone libraries from the last sampling period (day 106) contained organisms that showed lower homology to their closest relatives, often with other uncultured organisms, and in phyla that contain few cultured representatives. These data suggest that specific respiratory activity may be an important driver of bacterial diversity in composting environments.  相似文献

Field sampling and laboratory experiments examined whether ultraviolet radiation (UVR) affects the reproduction or the accumulation of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and ascorbic acid in ovaries of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller). Ovaries of sea urchins sampled across a depth gradient (0.5–10 m) in March 1998 did not differ in their gonadal index, or in concentrations of MAAs, or ascorbic acid. Concentrations of MAAs and ascorbic acid in ovaries were higher in sea urchins collected from a kelp bed compared with those collected from a community of crustose coralline algae. The concentrations of MAAs in ovaries varied seasonally, peaking in March, when sea urchins had high gonadal indices just before spawning. Ovaries of sea urchins maintained on controlled diets from October 1997 to April 1998 accumulated significantly higher concentrations of MAAs when fed a diet rich in MAAs than did ovaries of sea urchins fed an alga lacking MAAs, but the gonadal indices did not differ between diets. Sea urchins accumulated principally one MAA, shinorine, but not others that were available in high concentrations in their diet. Neither the gonadal index nor the ovarian concentrations of MAAs were affected by daily exposure of adult urchins to UVR for 6 months. Concentrations of ascorbic acid in ovaries did not differ among diets or UV-treatments. The percentages of nutritive phagocytes and gametic cells were not affected by diet or UVR, and did not co-vary with concentrations of MAAs or ascorbic acid in ovaries. These data support previous demonstrations that female sea urchins accumulate MAAs from their diet of macroalgae, but further show that the accumulation is selective for specific MAAs, particularly shinorine, and that adult S. droebachiensis do not accumulate MAAs in their ovaries or eggs in response to UV-exposure. These are also the first experimental studies to address whether MAAs are affected by or regulate gametogenesis, and indicate that they do not. Managing manure in reduced tillage and forage systems presents challenges, as incorporation by tillage is not compatible. Surface-applied manure that is not quickly incorporated into soil provides inefficient delivery of manure nutrients to crops due to environmental losses through ammonia (NH3) volatilization and nutrient losses in runoff, and serves as a major source of nuisance odors. An array of technologies now exist to facilitate the incorporation of liquid manures into soil with restricted or minor soil disturbance, some of which are new: shallow disk injection; chisel injection; aeration infiltration; pressure injection. Surface banding of manure inforages decreases NH3 emissions relative to surface broadcasting, as the canopy can decrease wind speed over the manure, but greater reductions can be achieved with manure injection. Soilaeration is intended to hasten manure infiltration, but its benefits are not consistent and may be related to factors such as soildrainage characteristics. Work remains to be done on refining its method of use and timing relative to manure application, which may improve its effectiveness. Placing manure under the soil surface efficiency by injection offers much promise to improve N use efficiency through less NH3 volatilization, reduced odors and decreased nutrient losses in runoff, relative to surface application. We identified significant gaps in our knowledge as manyof these technologies are relatively new, and this should help target future research efforts including environmental, agronomic, and economic assessments.  相似文献

The long-term ecological recovery of an impaired stream in response to an industrial facility’s pollution abatement actions and the implications of the biological monitoring effort to environmental management is the subject of this special issue of Environmental Management. This final article focuses on the synthesis of the biological monitoring program’s components and methods, the efficacy of various biological monitoring techniques to environmental management, and the lessons learned from the program that might be applicable to the design and application of other programs. The focus of the 25-year program has been on East Fork Poplar Creek, an ecologically impaired stream in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with varied and complex stressors from a Department of Energy facility in its headwaters. Major components of the long-term program included testing and monitoring of invertebrate and fish toxicity, bioindicators of fish health, fish contaminant accumulation, and instream communities (including periphyton, benthic macroinvertebrate, and fish). Key parallel components of the program include water chemistry sampling and data management. Multiple lines of evidence suggested positive ecological responses during three major pollution abatement periods. Based on this case study and the related literature, effective environmental management of impaired streams starts with program design that is consistent across space and time, but also adaptable to changing conditions. The biological monitoring approaches used for the program provided a strong basis for assessments of recovery from remedial actions, and the likely causes of impairment. This case study provides a unique application of multidisciplinary and quantitative techniques to address multiple and complex regulatory and programmatic goals, environmental stressors, and remedial actions.  相似文献

Micro- and small-scale low-carbon energy generators embedded within villages, towns and cities can provide a valuable income stream for local communities among other potential benefits. There are a range of social, political, technical and environmental factors that may impact upon the success of a planned energy generation project; however, these factors are rarely considered in unison. The aim of this research is to investigate and understand the concerns relating to equity and distributional justice that impact upon local groups interested in developing energy projects and to determine whether a whole systems approach can be used to draw out perceived issues. This has been achieved by working with two small village groups to test a newly developed energy equity assessment tool. This paper reports research findings from two villages in the UK both planning energy projects that intended to benefit their respective villages and examines perceived issues relating to equity and distributional justice associated with the proposed schemes. The research highlights some challenges facing community groups when planning micro- and small-scale energy projects and demonstrates the commitment, tenacity and high levels of personal risk that these groups have to bear in order to bring their projects to fruition and comments as to the type of actions that may be required to more wholly consider equity issues while developing future energy policy.  相似文献
