Although there is a large body of research on food webs in rocky intertidal communities, most of the emphasis has been on the marine benthic components. Effects of avian predation on highly mobile predators such as crabs, remains practically unstudied in rocky shore ecosystems. The crab, Cancer borealis, is an important component of the diet of gulls (Larus marinus, L. argentatus) at the Isles of Shoals, Maine, USA. C. borealis prey include the predatory gastropod Nucella lapillus L., the herbivore Littorina littorea, and mussels Mytilus edulis L. We hypothesized that gulls reduce abundance of C. borealis in the low intertidal and shallow subtidal, thereby allowing C. borealis prey to persist in high numbers. A study of crab tidal migration showed that C. borealis density nearly doubled at high tide compared to low tide; thus, crabs from a large subtidal source population migrate into the intertidal zone during high tides and either emigrate or are removed by gulls during low tides. Results from a small-scale (1 m2) predator caging experiment in the low intertidal zone indicated that enclosed crabs significantly reduced L. littorea abundance when protected from gull predation. In a much larger-scale gull exclusion experiment, densities of C. borealis increased significantly during low and high tides in exclosures relative to the controls. C. borealis density was inversely correlated with changes in the abundance of two mesopredators Carcinus maenas and Nucella lapillus, and with the space-occupier M. edulis. There was a similar negative correlation between abundance of C. borealis and the change in abundance of the herbivore L. littorea, but the trend was not significant. Mortality of tethered L. littorea was associated with C. borealis density across sites. However, preferred algae did not change in response to L. littorea density during the experiment. Thus, we found suggestive, but not conclusive, evidence for a three-level cascade involving gulls, crabs, and L. littorea. Our studies strongly suggest that gulls, as apex predators, generate three-level trophic cascades in rocky intertidal food webs by preventing the highly mobile subtidal predator, C. borealis, from establishing substantial populations in the low-mid intertidal zone thereby indirectly enhancing densities of two key mesopredators (N. lapillus, Carcinus) and blue mussels (M. edulis). 相似文献

The sabellid polychaete Sabellastarte spectabilis (Grube 1878) was collected at approximately monthly intervals from January 2002 to December 2003 from intertidal and subtidal
reefs near the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology in Kane’ohe Bay, Hawaii, USA (21°N, 157°W). Gametogenesis and spawning periodicity
were investigated using histological techniques and induction of spawning trials. Worms were characterized into four discrete
reproductive stages based on histological evidence: (1) No evidence of reproductive activity in the coelom (sex cannot be
determined), (2) Only coelomocytes present in the coelom (sex cannot be determined), (3) Some gametes present in the coelom
(sex can be determined) and (4) Coelom densely packed with gametes (sex can be determined). The small hermaphroditic portion
of the population was not used in this study. Stage 4 worms were present over an extended period of time (females, March–December
and males, March–November) indicating a potentially broad reproductive season. No correlation between day length and maturation
stages in S. spectabilis was detected. However, the statistical model Y = ([394.26 × X] − [7.793 × X
2]) − 4960.781 where Y the % frequency of Stage 4 worms and X the mean monthly water temperature explained 44% of the variation between water temperature and % frequency of Stage 4 worms.
Maturation appeared to coincide with water temperatures of 24–25°C (March–September) after which there is a reduction in the
% frequency of stage 4 individuals. Induction of spawning trials conducted between May and January showed the month of October
with a significantly higher percent success than any other month investigated. According to all available information (e.g.,
natural spawning in water tables, histological data, induction of spawning trials, correlation of maturation stages with observed
changes in average monthly water temperature.), there is an apparent peak in reproductive activity (spawning) within a broad

Leaking underground storage tank systems at service stations have resulted in tens of thousands of petroleum releases and associated groundwater chemical plumes often extending hundreds of feet off‐site. Technical and engineering approaches to assess and clean up releases from underground tanks, product lines, and dispensers using technologies such as soil vapor extraction, air sparging, biostimulation, and monitored natural attenuation are well understood and widely published throughout the literature. This article summarizes life‐cycle environmental response costs typically encountered using site‐specific cost estimation or metric‐based cost categories considering the overall complexity of site conditions: (1) simple sites where response actions require smaller scale assessments and/or remediation and have limited or no off‐site impacts; (2) average sites where response actions require larger scale assessments and/or remediation typical of petroleum releases; (3) complex sites where response actions require greater on‐site and/or off‐site remediation efforts; and (4) mega sites where petroleum plumes have impacted public or private water supplies or where petroleum vapors have migrated into occupied buildings. Associated cleanup cost estimates rely upon appropriate combinations of individual work elements and the duration of operation, maintenance, and monitoring activities. These cost estimates can be offset by state reimbursement funds, coverage in purchase agreements, and insurance policies. A risk assessment tool for contaminated sites in low-permeability fractured media is developed, based on simple transient and steady-state analytical solutions. The discrete fracture (DF) tool, which explicitly accounts for the transport along fractures, covers different source geometries and history (including secondary sources) and can be applied to a wide range of compounds. The tool successfully simulates published data from short duration column and field experiments. The use for risk assessment is illustrated by three typical risk assessment case studies, involving pesticides, chlorinated solvents, benzene and MTBE. The model is compared with field data and with results from a simpler approach based on an Equivalent Porous Media (EPM). Risk assessment conclusions of the DF and EPM approaches are very different due to the early breakthrough, long term tailing, and lower attenuation due to degradation associated with fractured media. While the DF tool simulates the field data, it is difficult to conclude that the DF model is superior to an EPM model because of a lack of long term monitoring data. However, better agreement with existing field data by the DF model using observed physical fracture parameters favors the use of this model over the EPM model for risk assessments. 相似文献

Same-sex sexual behaviors are well documented in both captive and wild animals. In monogamous species, these behaviors are
often exclusive, each individual having only one same-sex partner. A bias in sex ratio has been proposed as a social context
yielding same-sex pair-bonding, but this hypothesis has rarely been tested. Focusing on a life-long pair-bonding songbird,
the zebra finch Taeniopygia guttata, we tested whether same-sex pairing results from a shortage of individuals of the opposite sex. By experimentally skewing
the sex ratio towards members of one sex, we observed a greater proportion of same-sex pair-bonds of that sex. Moreover, we
assessed whether the quality and stability of social interactions were equivalent in same-sex and male–female pairs. Male–male
and female–female same-sex bonds display the same behavioral characteristics as male–female ones: they are intense, highly
selective, and stable affinitive relationships involving the same behavioral displays already described in wild birds. Moreover,
same-sex male bonds were sufficiently strong not to split up when individuals were given the opportunity to reproduce with
females. Because the pair-bond in socially monogamous species represents a partnership that may give advantages for survival
(e.g., resources defense, fighting against predators, etc.), we propose that same-sex pairing in the zebra finch may result

Tropical forests are under pressure from both commercial and smallholder agriculture. Forest frontiers are seeing dynamic land use changes that frequently lead to land system regime shifts, posing challenges for the sustainability of entire local social-ecological systems. Monitoring highly dynamic land use change and detecting land system regime shifts is methodologically challenging due to trade-offs between spatial and temporal data resolution. We propose an innovative approach that combines analysis of very-high-resolution satellite imagery with participatory mapping based on workshops and field walks. Applying it in Laos, Myanmar, and Madagascar, we were able to collect annual land use information over several decades. Unlike conventional land use change mapping approaches, which assess only few points in time, our approach provides information at a temporal resolution that enables detection of gradual and abrupt land system regime shifts. 相似文献

Survival estimates generated from live capture-mark-recapture studies may be negatively biased due to the permanent emigration of marked individuals from the study area. In the absence of a robust analytical solution, researchers typically sidestep this problem by simply reporting estimates using the term "apparent survival." Here, we present a hierarchical Bayesian multistate model designed to estimate true survival by accounting for predicted rates of permanent emigration. Initially we use dispersal kernels to generate spatial projections of dispersal probability around each capture location. From these projections, we estimate emigration probability for each marked individual and use the resulting values to generate bias-adjusted survival estimates from individual capture histories. When tested using simulated data sets featuring variable detection probabilities, survival rates, and dispersal patterns, the model consistently eliminated negative biases shown by apparent survival estimates from standard models. When applied to a case study concerning juvenile survival in the endangered Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus mirabilis), bias-adjusted survival estimates increased more than twofold above apparent survival estimates. Our approach is applicable to any capture-mark-recapture study design and should be particularly valuable for organisms with dispersive juvenile life stages. 相似文献

Chemical ecology provides unique perspectives for managing plant/human interactions to achieve food security. Allelochemicals
function as chemical defences of crop plants, enhancing yields. While ingested allelochemicals can confer health benefits
to humans, at higher concentrations they are often toxic. The delicate balance between their positive and negative effects
in crop plants is influenced by many factors. Some of these—how environment affects optimal levels of defence, how metabolic
interactions with nutrients affect toxicity of ingested allelochemicals—are the province of chemical ecology. These biological
factors, however, interact with social factors, and neither can be studied independently. Chemical ecologists must work together
with social scientists to understand the overall system. Here, we illustrate such an integrative approach, analysing the interactions
between people and the major tropical crop manioc, which contains cyanogenic glucosides. Polymorphism for cyanogen levels
in manioc facilitates analysis of how costs and benefits of crop defences vary among social systems. We first show how people/manioc
interactions diversified in this crop’s Amazonian homeland, then turn to the remarkable cultural adaptations of African farmers
since manioc’s introduction 400 years ago. Finally, we evaluate new coevolutionary challenges in parts of Africa where people
are still unfamiliar with a potentially dangerous crop. Current environmental and social catastrophes have restricted farmers’
options, resulting in acute problems in health of humans and ecosystems. We show that high cyanogen levels confer important
agronomic advantages, but also impose costs and constraints that can only be understood when biology is coupled with analysis
of social, cultural and economic factors. Detoxifying manioc technologically requires know-how, time, water and other resources.
Detoxifying residual dietary cyanogens metabolically depends on being able to grow, or to buy, the nutrients required for
detoxification, primarily sulphur-rich proteins. Solutions that appear adaptive today may not be in the future, as changing
climate, rising atmospheric CO2 levels and decreased access to fertilizers affect productivity of crops and the nutrient and allelochemical composition of

There is increasing concern for the disruptive effects seen in aquatic species exposed to environmental contaminants. However,
few studies have investigated the impact of such contaminants on the behavior of individuals living in exposed waters. Contaminant
exposure can affect animal populations by disrupting behaviors including feeding, locomotion, and mating. In this study, we
examined how living in an ecosystem polluted by combinations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls,
and heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead, zinc) impacts contest behavior in the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus). Fish collected from heavily contaminated and cleaner sites in Lake Ontario were subjected to a resource contest to determine
the effect of these contaminants on aggression and the establishment of dominance hierarchies, which in turn influence access
to food, shelter, and mating opportunities. Dominance establishment (a clear resource winner) was less obvious among fish
from the contaminated site compared to the more stable hierarchies that formed between pairs of fish from the clean site.
Pairs of fish from the contaminated site performed more assessment displays compared to fish from clean sites. These results
suggest that the costs of living in an environment under exposure can shape behavioral repertoires. The altered conflict resolution
strategies of contaminated fish may reflect impaired cognitive function, sensory perception, and/or higher metabolic load
associated with aggression. This study provides support for the utilization of quantifiable behavioral differences as ecologically
relevant measures of contaminant exposure. 相似文献

A series of field surveys were carried out on two permanent pools of the upper Glenelg River in SW Victoria, Australia. One was representative of the wider and deeper pools while the other was representative of the more-narrow and shallower pools. Both pools showed a typical seasonal cycle of warm, brackish, oxygen-poor, summer conditions and cool, oxygen-rich, low-salinity, winter conditions. The summer salinity increases were larger than expected, suggesting possible saline groundwater inflow from unidentified springs. Both pools contained anoxic water in their deeper sections but this was permanent only in the deeper pool. A simple model of the flushing rate of such anoxic pools subject to flows, such as environmental flow releases, was developed, based on an energy balance between the potential energy required to lift the anoxic layer and the kinetic energy derived from the river flow. The results were tested against and in agreement with the field measurements. The model also suggests that the anoxic layers are resilient to all but the largest environmental flows. 相似文献
