Three different sizes of hog farms were selected to analyze the carbon emissions reduction and the cost–benefit of three methane digester systems. The sizes of the digesters are 2,200, 2,200 and 800 m3, respectively. The sales of slaughter hogs from them are 50,000, 35,000 and 10,000 head, respectively. The carbon emissions reductions were 5,237, 4,017, and 1,334 tons, respectively. The results show that while the methane digester systems have a significant effect on carbon emissions reduction, it is difficult to operate the systems sustainably. If the carbon emissions reduction can be traded at high enough prices in the carbon offset markets, then the systems will be profitable and sustainable. Newly established China's domestic carbon offset market could provide this possibility, but more government support is needed. In addition, this study shows that scale economies make the digester adoption relatively more profitable for larger farms than smaller ones. 相似文献

The ecosystem services (ES) concept is being increasingly incorporated into environmental policy formulation and management approaches. The Corporate Ecosystem Services Review (ESR) is a framework used to assess the dependence and impact that a business has on ES. The success of the corporate experience of ES assessment provides an opportunity for adaption for local authority decision making. In this paper, the ESR tool was adapted to the South African setting at a local government level, and tested at two sites in the Msunduzi Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal. In testing the tool and gathering feedback from key stakeholders, it was found that there are both opportunities and challenges to this approach. Overall, however, it provides an opportunity for the systematic inclusion of ES assessment into existing regulatory frameworks for land-use planning and Integrated Environmental Management, whether in a strategic application, at a broader spatial (municipal) scale or in a specific locale within the municipality. 相似文献

Building a community that is resilient to disasters has become one of the main goals of disaster management. Communities that are more disaster resilient often experience less impact from the disaster and reduced recovery periods afterwards. This study develops a methodology for constructing a set of indicators measuring Community Disaster Resilience Index (CDRI) in terms of human, social, economic, environmental, and institutional factors. In this study, the degree of community resilience to natural disasters was measured for 229 local municipalities in Korea, followed by an examination of the relationship between the aggregated CDRI and disaster losses, using an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression method and a geographically weighted regression (GWR) method. Identifying the extent of community resilience to natural disasters would provide emergency managers and decision-makers with strategic directions for improving local communities' resilience to natural disasters while reducing the negative impacts of disasters. 相似文献

Biosorption efficiency of coir pith, a waste product from coir industry, was investigated in this study for the removal of metallic pollutants such as Ni, Cu and Zn from aqueous solutions. The disposal of coir pith is a major problem associated with the coir industries, especially working in the small-scale sector. The present study explores the effectiveness of utilization of coir pith, an accumulating waste, as a biosorbent for heavy metal removal. Batch mode studies were done to evaluate the efficiency of removal of metals under varying adsorption conditions of pH, metal concentration and contact time. Characterization studies of the biosorbent and SEM analysis were done. Kinetic modelling studies were tried using Lagergren pseudo-first-order and second-order models. Equilibrium studies were done using well-known Freundlich, Langmuir and D–R isotherm models. It was found that all isotherms are fitting well indicating the efficiency of coir pith as an adsorbent of heavy metals. The applicability of all the three isotherms to the sorption processes shows that both monolayer adsorption and heterogeneous energetic distribution of active sites on the surface of the adsorbent are possible. Due to the abundance and low cost of these materials, adsorption technologies developed can act as good sustainable options for the future in heavy metal removal from industrial effluents. 相似文献

This paper considers a two-echelon closed-loop supply chain consisting of a manufacturer and a remanufacturer at the upper echelon and a retailer at the lower echelon. The retailer faces a constant demand from customers, which is satisfied through recovered and new products received from the remanufacturer and the manufacturer, respectively. The manufacturer produces the product with finite rate, whereas the recovery of returned product is instantaneous at the remanufacturer. We develop three models to determine the optimal production-inventory policy of the players for minimizing the joint total cost of the system. In the first model, the retailer receives the product in batches from the manufacturer and the remanufacture simultaneously, whereas in the second and third models, the batches are received alternatively. In the third model, however, the procurement of raw material at the manufacturer is also considered. Numerical illustration is presented to examine the impact of certain key parameters. 相似文献

Through a sensitivity analysis, the trade-off between vehicle range and CO2 emissions is investigated as a function of electric emissions coefficient. Various powertrains were analysed for use in a small crossover sport utility vehicle. Gasoline, gasoline electric hybrid, diesel, fuel cell and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were considered. Using various upstream fuel pathways and a model for vehicle performance, emissions and energy use were estimated. The hydrogen fuel cell vehicle was found preferable to BEVs under conditions of high CO2 emissions per kW-hr and a high vehicle range requirement. The aim of the present study is to investigate mechanical and morphological properties of pineapple leaf fibres (PALF) reinforced phenolic composites and its comparison with kenaf fibre (KF)/phenolic composites. Mechanical properties (tensile, flexural and impact) of untreated and treated PALF phenolic composites at different fibre loading were investigated. Tensile, flexural and impact properties of PALF and kenaf/phenolic composites were analyzed as per ASTM standard. Morphological analysis of tensile fracture samples of composites was carried out by scanning electron microscopy. Obtained results indicated that treated PALF/phenolic composites at 50% PALF loading exhibited better tensile, flexural and impact properties as compared to other untreated PALF/phenolic composites. Treated kenaf/phenolic composites at 50% fibre loading showed better tensile, flexural and impact properties than untreated kenaf/phenolic composite. It is concluded that treated 50% fibre loading kenaf and PALF/phenolic composites showed better mechanical properties than untreated kenaf and PALF/phenolic composites due to good fibre/matrix interfacial bonding. Results obtained in this study will be used for the further study on hybridization of PALF and KF based phenolic composites. 相似文献
