Osteogenesis imperfecta type II was diagnosed prenatally by analysis of DNA obtained from chorionic villus sampling (CVS) performed at 12 weeks of gestation in a woman who previously had had an affected child. The father had been shown to be mosaic for a mutation in the gene (COL1A2) which encodes the α2(I) chain of type I collagen. An affected fetus was predicted by detection of the mutation in amplified chorionic villus genomic DNA. Ultrasound examination at 13 weeks 4 days demonstrated femoral deformity and virtual absence of calvarial mineralization. In pregnancies at risk for osteogenesis imperfecta type II, sonographic evidence of skeletal abnormalities may be evident by 13 weeks' gestation. 相似文献

Bayesian hierarchical models were used to assess trends of harbor seals, Phoca vitulina richardsi, in Prince William Sound, Alaska, following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Data consisted of 4–10 replicate observations per year at 25 sites over 10 years. We had multiple objectives, including estimating the effects of covariates on seal counts, and estimating trend and abundance, both per site and overall. We considered a Bayesian hierarchical model to meet our objectives. The model consists of a Poisson regression model for each site. For each observation the logarithm of the mean of the Poisson distribution was a linear model with the following factors: (1) intercept for each site and year, (2) time of year, (3) time of day, (4) time relative to low tide, and (5) tide height. The intercept for each site was then given a linear trend model for year. As part of the hierarchical model, parameters for each site were given a prior distribution to summarize overall effects. Results showed that at most sites, (1) trend is down; counts decreased yearly, (2) counts decrease throughout August, (3) counts decrease throughout the day, (4) counts are at a maximum very near to low tide, and (5) counts decrease as the height of the low tide increases; however, there was considerable variation among sites. To get overall trend we used a weighted average of the trend at each site, where the weights depended on the overall abundance of a site. Kernel density estimators are often used to estimate the utilization distributions (UDs) of animals. Kernel UD estimates have a strong theoretical basis and perform well, but are usually reported without estimates of error or uncertainty. It is intuitively and theoretically appealing to estimate the sampling error in kernel UD estimates using bootstrapping. However, standard equations for kernel density estimates are complicated and computationally expensive. Bootstrapping requires computing hundreds or thousands of probability densities and is impractical when the number of observations, or the area of interest is large. We used the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and discrete convolution theorem to create a bootstrapping algorithm fast enough to run on commonly available desktop or laptop computers. Application of the FFT method to a large (n>20,000) set of radio telemetry data would provide a 99.6% reduction in computation time (i.e., 1.6 as opposed to 444 hours) for 1000 bootstrap UD estimates. A generic approach has been developed to simulate dynamically the uptake and turnover of radionuclides by marine biota. The approach incorporates a three-compartment biokinetic model based on first order linear kinetics, with interchange rates between the organism and its surrounding environment. Model rate constants are deduced as a function of known parameters: biological half-lives of elimination, concentration factors and a sample point of the retention curve, allowing for the representation of multi-component release. The new methodology has been tested and validated in respect of non-dynamic assessment models developed for regulatory purposes. The approach has also been successfully tested against research dynamic models developed to represent the uptake of technetium and radioiodine by lobsters and winkles. Assessments conducted on two realistic test scenarios demonstrated the importance of simulating time-dependency for ecosystems in which environmental levels of radionuclides are not in equilibrium. 相似文献

Settled house dust can be a source of human exposure to toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through non-dietary ingestion and dermal contact. Information regarding the concentrations of various contaminants in house dust would be useful in estimating the risk associated with exposure to these compounds. This study reports on the surface loading, variability and distribution of PAHs in settled house dust collected from homes in three locations: Sumgayit, Azerbaijan; Shanxi Province, China; and southern Texas, United States. The highest PAH floor surface loadings were observed in China, followed by Azerbaijan and Texas. Median concentrations of high molecular weight (four ring and larger) PAHs ranged from a low of 0.11 microg/m(2) in Texas, to 2.9 microg/m(2) in Azerbaijan and 162 microg/m(2) in China. These trends in total surface loading and relative carcinogenicity indicate that the risk of health effects from exposure to PAHs in house dust is highest in the Chinese population and lowest in the Texas population. As anticipated, variability among dust samples from different houses within the same region was high, with coefficients of variation greater than 100%. Alkylated PAHs comprised 30-50% of the total mass of PAHs. Based on a comparison of the composition of specific components, PAHs in China and Azerbaijan were determined to be derived mainly from combustion sources rather than from unburned fossil fuels such as petroleum. These results, coupled with ongoing investigation of appropriate PAH exposure biomarkers in humans, will guide future efforts to identify ways to reduce exposures in the study areas. 相似文献

Reproduction in opportunistically breeding bird species has traditionally been considered non-seasonal with individuals taking
advantage of favourable environmental conditions as they arise. However, some studies imply that this opportunistic breeding
may be superimposed on an underlying seasonality, which has effects on the readiness to breed when conditions are favourable.
The zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) is the classic opportunistic breeder and widely used as such in studies. In a series of laboratory-based breeding experiments,
we found evidence to suggest that there are seasonal differences in maternal reproductive investment in the zebra finch even
when photoperiod, temperature, relative humidity and diet were held constant. Females showed highly significant seasonal differences
in clutch size and egg mass with laying order. Clutch size showed a spring/summer peak typical of multi-brooded species in
the wild. There was also a significant increase in egg mass with laying order in all seasons except winter. This variation
in breeding parameters with season may allow females to adjust investment depending on the potential fitness returns from
a given reproductive attempt. These findings also raise a warning about interpreting results of multiple zebra finch breeding

Although dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) has a variety of functions in marine macroalgae including that of a cryoprotectant,
an osmolyte, a way to remove excess sulfur and energy, an antioxidant, and an allelopathic precursor, the latter two functions
are believed to be the most important in Ulva lactuca L. (=U. fenestrata) in intertidal populations on the coast of Washington state, USA. The present study found significant variation in DMSP concentrations
among U. lactuca collected in May 2005 from six sites ranging from 47°54.45′N (Possession Point, Whidbey Island, WA, USA) to 48°30.55′N (Shannon
Point Beach, Anacortes, WA, USA), and also among individuals within sites, and among tissues (basal tissues near the holdfast,
middle of the blades, and tips). Concentrations ranged from 37 to 224 μmol g−1 fresh mass (FM). In several 10-day experiments between July 2001 and August 2004 with U. lactuca collected from several places on the coast of Washington, the effects of nutrient level (DIN), light intensity and wavelength,
and grazing by the herbivorous gastropod Lacuna vincta, were examined. None of these manipulations resulted in DMSP concentrations that differed significantly from controls, and
variance in DMSP concentrations within each experiment was very low. Although DMSP concentrations in U. lactuca may be affected by factors not tested in these experiments, it is also possible that the observed spatial differences reflect
constitutive genotypic or phenotypic differences among geographically separated U. lactuca populations or among cryptic Ulva species.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) discharged from an ocean outfall near Barceloneta, Puerto Rico were found to be present at significant levels (μg/L) in a large area of the Atlantic Ocean north of Puerto Rico. The VOCs in the waste treatment plant effluent, which receives mainly industrial wastes, consisted predominantly of a series of straight and highly branched alkanes between n-C14 and n-C18. 相似文献

Asymmetric flow-field flow fractionation-inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry was used to determine whether colloidal arsenic(As) exists in soil pore water and soil extract samples at two arsenic-contaminated abandoned gold mines(Montague and Goldenville, Nova Scotia). Colloidal arsenic was found in 12 out of the 80 collected samples(= 15%), and was primarily associated with iron(Fe) in the encountered colloids. The molar Fe/As ratios indicate that the colloids in some samples appeared to be discrete iron–arsenic minerals, whereas in other samples, they were more consistent with As-rich iron(oxy)hydroxides. Up to three discrete size fractions of colloidal As were encountered in the samples, with mean colloid diameters between 6 and 14 nm. The pore water samples only contained one size fraction of As-bearing colloids(around 6 nm diameter), while larger As-bearing colloids were only encountered in soil extracts. 相似文献
