The investigation concerns the impact of the new school environment on a group of 50 male and female children aged 11–16 years, who leave home to reside temporarily at boarding school, in terms of the characteristics of problems and worries reported and the incidence of spontaneous reports of homesickness. More problems relating to the school than to the home environment were reported but proportionally more worry units were reported associated with home problems for both males and females. There was no sex differences in this respect. The reported level of spontaneously reported homesickness was 16% and there were no sex differences. Factors such as age, geographical distance of move and decision to go away to school were not influential in determining the level of reported problems or incidence of spontaneous reports of homesickness. A relationship was found with level of problems reported and recent life history but the result proved difficult to interpret.  相似文献

Groundwater management with stochastic surface flows and artificial recharge is considered. Theoretical analysis characterizes the decision rules and establishes conditions for convergence of socially optimal and common property withdrawals and pumping lifts to limiting probability distributions. An empirical application to Kern County, California finds that optimal withdrawals are generally increasing in hydraulic head and decreasing in surface flows; however, nonmonotone behavior is observed in some instances. Artificial recharge is not observed in the limiting distribution due to an interaction of several factors. Optimal management implies relatively small gains over unregulated groundwater use when preferences are risk neutral.  相似文献

Vertical and horizontal distributions of 3 larval stages of the oyster Crassostrea virginica were measured concurrently with phytoplankton species compositions, phytoplankton size distributions and physical hydrographic parameters in tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay (USA) during the oyster spawning seasons of 1980 and 1981. The superposition of the biological distributions upon the physical hydrographic data provide instantaneous distributions of the entire system which are consistent with the upstream transport of oyster larvae. Oyster larvae distributions in the Choptank River and its Broad Creek and Tred Avon River tributaries can be described in terms of three contiguous regions: (1) a common spawning region, (2) an intermediate, upstream transport region and (3) a seed bed region where major spat set occurs. The phytoplankton species compositions and abundances in the size fraction less than 10 m in the tributary system during the transport were sufficient to supply optimum growth requirements of developing larvae. The transport proposed can explain the 30 yr record of consistently higher spat set success in one tributary, Broad Creek, relative to an adjoining tributary, the Tred Avon River. This may be a general mechanism whereby oysters maintain reproductive success and emigrate to seed bed regions in the Chesapeake Bay.Contribution No. 1144 of the McCollum-Pratt Institute and Department of Biology  相似文献

Exhaustible Resource Allocation in an Overlapping Generations Economy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper analyzes competitive allocations of an exhaustible resource in an overlapping generations economy. Conditions are given for the existence of equilibrium extraction rules such that both extraction and investment in future stocks are increasing and continuous in the current stock. The paper then considers the time paths of equilibrium allocations and shows that there are economies where equilibrium resource extractions and prices exhibit nonclassical behavior. This is illustrated through a finite horizon example in which extractions increase and prices decrease over the entire time horizon and an infinite horizon example where there are persistent cycles in extractions and prices and multiple equilibria. The paper concludes by examining welfare issues.  相似文献

Hydrochemical data, compound specific carbon isotope analysis and isotopic enrichment trends in dissolved hydrocarbons and residual electron acceptors have been used to deduce BTEX and MTBE degradation pathways in a fractured chalk aquifer. BTEX compounds are mineralised sequentially within specific redox environments, with changes in electron acceptor utilisation being defined by the exhaustion of specific BTEX components. A zone of oxygen and nitrate exhaustion extends approximately 100 m downstream from the plume source, with residual sulphate, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. Within this zone complete removal of the TEX components occurs by bacterial sulphate reduction, with sulphur and oxygen isotopic enrichment of residual sulphate (epsilon(s) = -14.4 per thousand to -16.0 per thousand). Towards the plume margins and at greater distance along the plume flow path nitrate concentrations increase with delta15N values of up to +40 per thousand indicating extensive denitrification. Benzene and MTBE persist into the denitrification zone, with carbon isotope enrichment of benzene indicating biodegradation along the flow path. A Rayleigh kinetic isotope enrichment model for 13C-enrichment of residual benzene gives an apparent epsilon value of -0.66 per thousand. MTBE shows no significant isotopic enrichment (delta13C = -29.3 per thousand to -30.7 per thousand) and is isotopically similar to a refinery sample (delta13C = -30.1 per thousand). No significant isotopic variation in dissolved MTBE implies that either the magnitude of any biodegradation-induced isotopic fractionation is small, or that relatively little degradation has taken place in the presence of BTEX hydrocarbons. It is possible, however, that MTBE degradation occurs under aerobic conditions in the absence of BTEX since no groundwater samples were taken with co-existing MTBE and oxygen. Low benzene delta13C values are correlated with high sulphate delta34S, indicating that little benzene degradation has occurred in the sulphate reduction zone. Benzene degradation may be associated with denitrification since increased benzene delta13C is associated with increased delta15N in residual nitrate. Re-supply of electron acceptors by diffusion from the matrix into fractures and dispersive mixing is an important constraint on degradation rates and natural attenuation capacity in this dual-porosity aquifer.  相似文献

China's urban and rural populations face very serious health risks from combustion particles. Major sources of exposure to inhalable particulates include the burning solid fuels (biomass and coal) for household cooking and heating, coal-fired industrial and residential boilers, tobacco smoking, and diesel motor vehicles. China began to address particulate pollution problems over 25 years ago and has implemented a series of progressively more aggressive policies. This paper reviews the successes and limitations of past and existing policies for particulate controls, as well as the effects of China's economic reforms and energy policies on particulate exposure and pollution management. We examine the challenge of emissions reporting, required as part of both China's pollution levy system and emerging system for "total emissions control." Finally, we discuss practical steps toward exposure-based regulation of particulates, which would take advantage of the high cost-effectiveness for lifesaving of controlling particulate exposure from household and neighborhood sources relative to that of controlling exposure from industrial sources.  相似文献

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are environmental contaminants found in aquatic ecosystems throughout the world as a result of both anthropogenic and natural production. The ecological risk posed by these compounds to organisms in freshwater environments, with a specific focus on aquatic macrophytes, was characterized. The plants evaluated were Lemna gibba, Myriophyllum spicatum and M. sibiricum and the HAAs screened were monochloroacetic acid (MCA), dichloroacetic acid (DCA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and chlorodifluoroacetic acid (CDFA). Laboratory toxicity data formed the basis of the risk assessment, but field studies were also utilized. The estimated risk was calculated using hazard quotients (HQ), as well as effect measure distributions (EMD) in a modified probabilistic ecological risk assessment. EMDs were used to estimate HAA thresholds of toxicity for use in HQ assessments. This threshold was found to be a more sensitive measure of low toxicity than the no observed effect concentrations (NOEC) or the effective concentration (EC10). Using both deterministic and probabilistic methods, it was found that HAAs do not pose a significant risk to freshwater macrophytes at current environmental concentrations in Canada, Europe or Africa for both single compound and mixture exposures. Still, HAAs are generally found as mixtures and their potential interactions are not fully understood, rendering this phase of the assessment uncertain and justifying further effects characterization. TCA in some environments poses a slight risk to phytoplankton and future concentrations of TFA and CDFA are likely to increase due to their recalcitrant nature, warranting continued environmental surveillance of HAAs.  相似文献
