A long-standing hypothesis in behavioural ecology posits that males with greater resource-holding potential (RHP) control resource sites deemed more valuable by sexually-receptive females and, thereby, males controlling such sites accrue greater reproductive success (RS). This hypothesis has historically been investigated using three separate but non-mutually exclusive relationships (male RHP vs. resource value, resource value vs. male RS and male RHP vs. RS). The relationships between these three variables are predicted to be strongly positive, however, due to measurement error and biological noise, perfect correlations (r = 1.0) are rare in biology even for well-established relationships. Moreover, the inaccurate identification of either the male trait(s) important to RHP or the resource characteristic sought by females will weaken the observed strength of the relationships. Here, I use meta-analysis to quantitatively describe the general pattern of these relationships in animals. I predict that the relationships between male RHP, resource-value and RS should be significantly positive (male RHP and resource-value should explain a large amount of the variation in male RS). My meta-analysis supports this hypothesis; however, in the best case scenario only ca. 20% of the variation in the response variable was explained. I conclude by identifying areas in which we need to improve our investigations of resource-defence animals and recommending approaches to meet these needs. Although safety management is known to be vital to construction projects, very few studies have solicited views from construction practitioners about their perceptions of which safety management practices (SMPs) are important to construction projects and related to project performance. An empirical study was undertaken in Hong Kong in order to shed more light on this topic. In the study, the importance levels of 15 popular SMPs and five project performance criteria were rated by 232 respondents. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted, and three SMP categories - information, process, and committees - were extracted. Of these three categories, safety management process was perceived by the construction practitioners as being the most important, followed by safety management information and committees. Moreover, the effect of the three SMP categories on a composite project performance variable was tested using hierarchical regression analysis. Results indicate that the “information” and “committees” categories were associated with project performance positively and significantly. One of the major conclusions of the study is that the construction industry has paid relatively less attention to safety management committees, which were empirically analyzed as having a strong perceived impact on project performance. In order to improve project performance, construction companies should promote the criticality of safety management committees.  相似文献

Annually emerging cicadas are a numerically and ecologically dominant species in Southwestern riparian forests. Humans have altered disturbance regimes that structure these forests such that floods are less common and wildfires occur more frequently than was historically the case. Impacts of these changes on primary consumers such as riparian cicadas are unknown. Because cicadas are consumed by a variety of animal species, disturbances that alter timing of their emergence or abundance could have consequences for species at higher trophic levels. We trapped emerging cicadas (Tibicen dealbatus) in burned and unburned riparian forest plots along the Middle Rio Grande in central New Mexico (USA) to determine effects of wildfire and vegetation structure on their density and phenology. We measured vegetation variables and soil temperature at cicada traps and related these variables to variation in emergence density and phenology. We also experimentally heated soil under emergence traps to examine the relationship between soil temperature and emergence phenology. Emergence density was similar in wildfire and unburned plots, though emergence date averaged earlier in wildfire plots and experimentally heated traps. We identified models containing cottonwood proximity (distance from the nearest cottonwood tree) and cottonwood canopy coverage as the most parsimonious explanations of emergence density at each trap. Model selection results were consistent with the literature and field observations that showed that cottonwood trees are an essential resource for T. dealbatus. Cottonwood canopy was also correlated with low soil temperatures, which are associated with later emergence dates. Failure of cottonwoods to reestablish following wildfire could result in cicadas emerging at lower densities and at earlier dates. For cicadas to emerge at densities and times that provide the greatest benefits to birds and other riparian-obligate secondary consumers, riparian forests should be protected from fire, and native vegetation in wildfire sites should be restored.  相似文献

Larvae of Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) were reared from hatching to the first or second crab stages in 11 combinations of salinities and cyclic temperatures (5, 20, and 35 S at 20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C, and 30° to 35°C; 25 S at 20° to 25°C and 30° to 35°C). The larvae survived to the megalops and first crab stages in all salinities and cycles of temperature other than 5 S at 30° to 35°C. The best survival to the megalops (94%) and first crab (90%) stages occurred in 20 S, 20° to 25°C. In all other combinations of salinities and temperatures there was a reduction in survival to the first crab stage. The duration of the larval stages was affected significantly by temperature, whereas the effect of salinity on the mean days from hatching to the first crab stage was not consistent at the different temperature cycles. Development to the first crab stage required the shortest time in 20 S, 30° to 35°C (mean 12.3 days), and the longest time in 5 and 35 S, 20° to 25°C (mean 22.6 days and 21.6 days, respectively). Megalops larvae reared in 35 S at all cycles of temperature, as well as larvae in 20 and 25 S, 30° to 35°C, showed a high percentage of abnormality, with the highest percentage occurring in 35 S, 30° to 35°C. It appears that larval development of R. harrisii is strongly influenced by environmental factors and not solely related to genetic differences. This research was supported by grants from the Nordic Council for Marine Biology and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission [Grant No. At-(40-1)-4377].Contribution No. 116, Zoological Museum, University of Oslo, Norway.  相似文献

The geographic distribution of stream reaches with potential to support high-quality habitat for salmonids has bearing on the actual status of habitats and populations over broad spatial extents. As part of the Coastal Landscape Analysis and Modeling Study (CLAMS), we examined how salmon-habitat potential was distributed relative to current and future (+100 years) landscape characteristics in the Coastal Province of Oregon, USA. The intrinsic potential to provide high-quality rearing habitat was modeled for juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and juvenile steelhead (O. mykiss) based on stream flow, valley constraint, and stream gradient. Land ownership, use, and cover were summarized for 100-m analysis buffers on either side of stream reaches with high intrinsic potential and in the overall area encompassing the buffers. Past management seems to have concentrated nonindustrial private ownership, agriculture, and developed uses adjacent to reaches with high intrinsic potential for coho salmon. Thus, of the area in coho salmon buffers, 45% is either nonforested or recently logged, but only 10% is in larger-diameter forests. For the area in steelhead buffers, 21% is either non-forested or recently logged while 20% is in larger-diameter forests. Older forests are most extensive on federal lands but are rare on private lands, highlighting the critical role for public lands in near-term salmon conservation. Agriculture and development are projected to remain focused near high-intrinsic-potential reaches for coho salmon, increasing the importance of effectively addressing nonpoint source pollution from these uses. Percentages of larger-diameter forests are expected to increase throughout the province, but the increase will be only half as much in coho salmon buffers as in steelhead buffers. Most of the increase is projected for public lands, where policies emphasize biodiversity protection. Results suggest that widespread recovery of coho salmon is unlikely unless habitat can be improved in high-intrinsic-potential reaches on private lands. Knowing where high-intrinsic-potential stream reaches occur relative to landscape characteristics can help in evaluating the current and future condition of freshwater habitat, explaining differences between species in population status and risk, and assessing the need for and feasibility of restoration.  相似文献

Summary Over five hundred adult longhorn milkweed beetles, Tetraopes tetraophthalmus, were individually marked and their copulatory success followed for one month in a pasture of Asclepias syriaca in northern Indiana, USA. Migration of beetles from the field site was greatest from areas of low population density. Dispersal was significantly greater for males experiencing low copulatory success; a similar but nonsignificant trend was observed for females. Large males, which displayed greater site tenacity than small males, copulated more frequently than small males because of their ability to displace small males from females. Both large and small males demonstrated a preference for large females in laboratory tests. Male preference in combination with aggressive displacement of small males results in size-assortative mating which was much stronger under conditions of high population density. It contributes to variance in male reproductive success since female size is known to be correlated with fecundity and offspring viability. Variance in copulatory success is similar for males and females, suggesting that both sexes experience similar intensities of sexual selection with respect to this component of reproductive success. Futhermore, comparison of this with other studies suggests that the intensity of sexual selection among males is positively correlated with the variance in body size which appears to be under both stabilizing and directional sexual selection in males but not in females.  相似文献
