The Tohoku region, Northeast Japan, was hit by a gigantic earthquake which occurred in the Pacific close to Tohoku, and subsequently
by a giant tsunami. These hazards have caused huge damage on the eastern coast Japan. The earthquake’s magnitude was 9.0,
the strongest ever recorded in Japan. The tsunami was also historical as its run-up height reached over 39 m. As of early
May, 2011, over 24 thousand people were reported as dead or missing. Moreover, serious accidents at the Fukushima Nuclear
Power Plants No.1 were caused by the effects of the tsunami. Therefore, the damage faced by Japanese people can be seen as
a giant composite disaster. Although Japan, and the northeast of Japan in particular, has over a long time period increased
its preparedness against earthquakes and tsunamis, huge damage still occurred. This paper considers why this tragedy occurred,
and what unrecognized factors contributed to the high vulnerability of the area. To assist in answering such questions, this
paper presents a timely report of the features of the earthquake and tsunami, the damage they caused, and the early efforts

Observations of air pollutants were conducted in remote Japanese islands (Oki Island and Okinawa Island) in early spring to clarify the extent of trans-boundary air pollution from the Asian continent. A three-dimensional Eulerian model calculation, which included parameters on emission, transport and transformation of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and ammonia, was performed to compile sulfate isosurface concentrations over the observational sites. Concentrations of non-sea-salt sulfate (nss-SO42−) of greater than 10 μg m−3 were observed at Oki after the northeastward passage of low-pressure systems in the Sea of Japan. At these times, the weather showed a typical winter pattern and air pollutants over China were transported southeastward to Japan with the northwesterly wind. The model calculation reproduced the observed variations of nss-SO42− concentration well, except for one case in which the model calculation could not reproduce the extremely low nss-SO42− concentration observed on 8 March. In Hedo (Okinawa Island), we observed long-lasting (3 days) medium concentrations of nss-SO42− (approximately 5 μg m−3). Although the model reproduced these observed medium concentrations well, in general the observed results were reproduced better for Oki than for Hedo. Under the synoptic weather conditions of early spring, high concentrations of nss-sulfate were sometimes transported to these remote Japanese islands from areas of continental Asia with a strong outflow of air pollutants. 相似文献

We estimated the cost of flood damage using numerical simulations based on digital map data and the flood control economy
investigation manual submitted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation, and Tourism in Japan. The simulation
was carried out using a flood model incorporating representative precipitation data for all of Japan. The economic predictions,
which estimate flood damage caused by extreme rainfall for the return periods of 5, 10, 30 50, and 100 years, are as follows:
(1) the cost of flood damage increases nearly linearly with increases in extreme precipitation; (2) assuming that flood protection
is completed for a 50-year return period of extreme rainfall, the benefit of flood protection for a 100-year return period
of rainfall is estimated to be 210 billion USD; (3) the average annual expected damage cost for flooding is predicted to be
approximately 10 billion USD per year, based on the probability of precipitation for a return period of 100 years and assuming
that flood control infrastructures will be completed within the 50-year return period and will be able to protect from flooding
with a 50-year return period; (4) urban and rural areas are predicted to suffer high and low costs of damage, respectively.
These findings will help to derive measures to enhance flood protection resulting from climate change. 相似文献

Norovirus GII.3, GII.4, and GII.17 were detected using pyrosequencing in sewage and oysters in January and February 2015, in Japan. The strains in sewage and oyster samples were genetically identical or similar, predominant strains belonging to GII.17 Kawasaki 2014 lineage. ABSTRACT: This study aimed to clarify public preferences for flood control measures in Japan, willingness to pay (WTP), and the main factors involved in WTP by applying the contingent valuation method. Findings showed that most residents surveyed expected some flood control measures, and revealed a diversity of interest in river management. WTP levels for different measures ranged from a mean of ¥2,887 to ¥4,861 and from a median of ¥1,000 to ¥2,000. However, WTP for additional flood risk reduction beyond initial levels was found to be zero. This was considered to be because WTP for flood risk reduction must be determined within a multi‐risk context. WTP for flood control measures may increase with per capita income, individual preparedness, and/or experience with flooding, but may decrease with distance from a river, acceptability of flood risk, and provision of environmental information. Furthermore, perception of flood risk may increase WTP, while perception of other risks may decrease it. Methods of dealing with environmental risk that were proposed in the survey may have affected WTP levels. 相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that a large body size and rapid growth rate affect the survival of larval Pacific bluefin tuna, Thunnus orientalis (PBT), and analyzed larval growth in relation to environmental conditions. Seven high density larval patches of PBT were tracked with reference buoys in the northwestern Pacific Ocean for 28–171 h in May–June from 2004 to 2008. The otolith radii and daily growth rates of the survivor larvae (collected on later tracking days of each tracking session) tended to be larger and more rapid, respectively, than those of original larvae (collected on earlier tracking days). A large body size was found to positively affect the survival of larval PBT, as did a rapid growth rate, even at an early larval stage (7 days after hatching). Generalized linear modeling showed that the otolith radius was influenced positively by the sea temperature, stratification parameter and food density, while the growth rate was influenced positively by the sea temperature and food density. 相似文献

Often in colonial seabirds, all colony members are believed to defend against nest predators and experience equal nest predation
risk. However, the variation of defense behavior among members and its reproductive consequences are largely unknown. We investigated
(1) individual variation in the nest defense of breeding Black-tailed Gulls Larus crassirostris against a natural egg predator, the Jungle Crow Corvus macrorhynchos and (2) how this behavioral variation affects an individual’s own nest predation risk and that of their neighbors. Results
were compared between 2 years where crow attack levels were manipulated to average 5 and 22 times normal rates (“low” and
“high” predation risk years, respectively) by the placement of varying numbers of artificial nests containing unguarded eggs
at the perimeter of the gull colony. In both years, 23–38% of parents, mostly males, showed “aggressive” defense behavior
(strikes or chases) against crows and decoys. Other “non-aggressive” gulls showed no defense. In the year of low predation
risk, intrusion rates by crows (landing within 0.5 m of an individual gull’s nest) were similar for aggressive and non-aggressive
gulls. In the year of high predation risk, however, the rates of intrusion for aggressive gulls (4%) and for non-aggressive
gulls with an aggressive neighbor (37%) were significantly lower than for non-aggressive gulls without an aggressive neighbor
(76%). These results indicate that aggressive individuals reduce nest predation risk for themselves and conspecific neighbors
