Epidemiological research underlying US air quality regulations documents significant associations between measures of fine particles and premature mortality. Recent studies examine potential mechanistic pathways, related to heart and lung functioning, that may contribute to the observed deaths. Our results support these pathophysiological analyses. We examine whether the onset of serious health conditions, consistent with disease pathways, is related to current and long-term exposure to particulate matter and ozone. Associations between air pollution and alternative indicators of health status are also evaluated. The 1996 wave of the Health and Retirement Study is used with a two-step estimator acknowledging limitations in our ability to measure individual exposures. The findings suggest significant current and long-term effects of particulates on new cases of heart attacks and angina, reinforcing the disease pathways identified in epidemiological studies. Long-term air pollution exposure is also a determinant of recently diagnosed chronic lung conditions and reports of shortness of breath. 相似文献

Antarctic krill maintain large population sizes despite dramatic seasonal fluctuations in food availability, but the mechanisms
for this are still debated. The aim of this study was to compare seasonal differences in enzyme activity and respiration rates
of larval and postlarval krill to provide insights into their overwintering strategies. Respiration rates, activity of the
metabolic enzyme citrate synthase (CS), and those of the digestive enzymes laminarinase and total proteinase were measured
in austral summer west of the Antarctic Peninsula, and in autumn in the southwestern Lazarev Sea. The 100-fold difference
in chlorophyll a concentrations between the two studies is representative of the classic transition from a summer bloom to sparse winter conditions.
Correspondingly, adult krill showed reduced respiration rates and CS activity in autumn. However, their digestive enzyme activity
was significantly higher, suggesting more efficient assimilation of food at low food levels. Similar-sized larvae showed no
summer-autumn differences in respiration rates and enzyme activity, supporting suggestions that they need to feed and grow
year-round. However, trends in enzymatic activity varied between the larval stages measured, implying ontogenetic changes
in body structure and function.

We conducted behavioral observations and genetic analysis on breeding pairs of common loons in the upper Great Lakes region
from 1993 through 1995 to look for behavioral evidence of extrapair copulations (EPCs) and to determine parentage of young.
Pairs remained close to each other (usually within 20 m) during the pre-laying period, leaving little opportunity for EPCs
to occur. Males and females both maintained physical proximity by approaching each other when they became separated. Copulations
were obvious but infrequent, occurring about once every other day during the pre-laying period. Multilocus DNA fingerprinting
was consistent with behavioral findings: 58 young from 47 different families were all genetic offspring of parents that raised
them. Perfect genetic monogamy (genetic parentage of young by parents that rear them) in loons might arise as a consequence
of the need for vigorous territorial defense to prevent territorial takeover.

This paper uses one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the US, Andrew in 1992, to define a quasi-random experiment that permits estimation of the responses of housing values to information about new hurricanes. Lee County, Florida did not experience damage from Andrew. The storm was a “near-miss.” We hypothesize that Andrew conveyed risk information to homeowners in the county. A difference-in-differences (DND) framework identifies the effect of this information on property values in areas likely to experience significant storm damage. Maps are useful tools for understanding, managing, and protecting the marine environment, yet few useful and statistically defensible maps of environmental quality and aquatic resources have been developed in near-coastal regions. Current environmental management efforts, such as ocean monitoring by sewage dischargers, routinely sample areas of potential impact using sparse sampling grids. Heterogeneous oceanic conditions often make extrapolation from these grids to non-sampled locations questionable. Although rarely applied in coastal monitoring, kriging offers a more rigorous statistical approach to mapping and allows confidence intervals to be calculated for predictions. Its usefulness relies on accurate models of the spatial variability through estimating the semivariogram. Many optimal designs for estimating the semivariogram have been proposed, but these designs are often difficult to implement in practice. In this paper, we present simple design strategies for augmenting existing monitoring designs with the goal of estimating the semivariogram. In particular, we investigate a multi-lag cluster design strategy, where clusters of sites, spaced at various lag distances, are placed around fixed stations on an existing sampling grid. We find that these multi-lag cluster designs provide improved accuracy in estimating the parameters of the semivariogram. Based on simulation study findings, we apply a multi-lag cluster enhancement to the monitoring grid for the City of San Diego’s Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant as part of a special study to map chemical contaminants in sediments around its sewage outfall. 相似文献

We describe a portable, non-motorized device for delivering a tracer dye into seawater under field conditions. Dye is ejected at a constant flow rate over a period of tens of minutes. The ejector works in a wide range of ambient pressures without external energy requirements. The flow rate is adjusted simply by varying the length of the delivery tube. The dye streams permitted observations of the upcurrent and downcurrent flow regimes for a filter-feeding crinoid (Comanthus bennetti) living at a depth of 8 m on a coral reef. The results indicate that the crinoid may enhance the rate of particle capture by changing the scale of turbulence in the water passing through the mesh of the filtration fan. 相似文献

Summary Foraging by a social wren, Campylorhynchus nuchalis (Troglodytidae), in a tropical savanna habitat is not enhanced by aggregation. Data for marked individuals show that solitary foraging results in a higher capture rate than foraging near others. We find no evidence of imitative foraging, as individuals actively avoid successful foragers following a capture and successful foragers do not restrict their search to recently productive stations or techniques. Captures are seldom temporally clumped, and clumping is probably not pronounced enough to favor imitation. Juveniles show no greater tendency to respond to captures of others, or to succeed in foraging in a group, than do adults. Aggregation is probably disadvantageous for foraging because of dispersed, scarce, cryptic, and noneruptive prey and because of the searching technique of these foliage-gleaning insectivores. If predator avoidance is enhanced by aggregation, it does not result in either increased survival or increased foraging efficiency in large groups, even by juveniles. 相似文献
