Abstract: Computer simulation models are used extensively for the development of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs). Specifically, the Hydrological Simulation Program‐FORTRAN (HSPF) is used in Virginia for the development of TMDLs for bacteria impairments. HSPF estimates discharge from a reach using function tables (FTABLES). The FTABLE relates stream stage, surface area, and volume to discharge from a reach. In this study, five FTABLE estimation methods were assessed by comparing their effect on various simulation outputs. Four “field‐based” methods used detailed cross‐sectional data collected via site surveys. A fifth “digital‐based” method used digital elevation data in combination with the Natural Resources Conservation Service Regional Hydraulic Geometry Curves. Sets of FTABLEs created using each method were used in simulations of instream bacteria concentration for a Virginia watershed. Several statistics relating to instream bacteria including long‐term average concentration, die‐off, and the violation rate of Virginia’s bacteria criterion were compared. The pair‐wise Student’s t‐test was used for the comparison. The HSPF simulations that used FTABLES estimated from digitally based data consistently produced significantly higher long‐term average instream fecal bacteria concentrations, significantly lower instream fecal bacteria die‐off, which is related to differences in residence time in the streams, and significantly higher water quality criterion violation rates. 相似文献

Coexistence of nine anemonefish species: differential host and habitat utilization, size and recruitment 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The region of Madang, Papua New Guinea, has the highest reported species diversity of both anemonefishes (nine species) and
their host anemones (ten species). To determine which factors may allow so many anemonefish species to coexist at this location,
we studied their patterns of distribution, abundance, and recruitment. Population surveys at three replicate reef sites within
four zones situated at varying distances from the mainland (nearshore, mid-lagoon, outer barrier, and offshore) indicated
that each species of host anemone and anemonefish lived within a particular range of zones. Each species of anemonefish lived
primarily with one species of host. Anemonefish species that lived with the same host species usually had different distribution
patterns among zones (e.g., Amphiprion percula occupied Heteractis magnifica in nearshore zones, while A. perideraion occupied H. magnifica in offshore zones). Monitoring of natural populations showed that there were few changes (losses or recruitment) in the number
or species of fishes associated with each individual anemone over periods ranging from 3 to 9 months. Recruitment was monitored
on anemones with and without residents (resident fishes were removed) within each of three zones (nearshore, mid-lagoon, outer
barrier). Significantly more anemonefishes recruited to anemones without resident fishes than to anemones with resident fishes.
Each anemonefish species recruited to particular host species and zones. The distribution and abundance of the recruits of
each fish species among zones were positively correlated with the distribution and abundance of resident fishes in the benthic
habitat. This suggests that the spatial patterns of recruitment among zones strongly determined the distribution and abundance
patterns of the benthic populations, and they were not the result of post-recruitment mortality or movement. Coexistence of
the nine anemonefish species on the limited anemone resource was considered possible because of niche differentiation (i.e.,
differences in host and habitat utilization among zones), and the ability of two small species (i.e., Amphiprion sandaracinos and A. leucokranos) to cohabit individual anemones with other anemonefish species.

Fluorescence of organic matter from six contrasting freshwaters was analysed after filtration (1.2 microm and 0.2 microm filter sizes) and pH perturbation (+/-2 pH units from ambient conditions). Two fluorophores were compared in detail: tryptophan-like fluorescence, whose filtration and pH characteristics are relatively poorly understood, and humic-like fluorescence, which is better characterised. Although there was some variability in both fluorophores, the tryptophan-like fluorescence showed the most significant decrease in fluorescence intensity between raw and 1.2 microm filter samples, and a much smaller decrease between 1.2 and 0.2 microm, demonstrating a significant source associated with particulate material as well as a significant <0.2 microm fraction. In contrast, humic-like fluorescence shows little change with filtration, suggesting that the majority of this fluorescence is associated with truly dissolved material. The pH perturbation experiments demonstrate that tryptophan-like fluorescence is less impacted by pH than with filter fraction. For humic-like fluorescence, pH effects are weak and are not as consistent as those reported in the literature for extracted humic substances. pH perturbation of the freshwaters shows a wide range of sample specific pH responses, significantly more variable than that observed in experiments using extracted humic substances and tryptophan standards, demonstrating the natural variability of freshwater dissolved organic matter. 相似文献

Biacore biosensor immunoassay for 4-nonylphenols: assay optimization and applicability for shellfish analysis 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
A rapid Biacore biosensor immunoassay of 4-nonylphenols was developed. Two types of antibodies were used in the study: polyclonal antibodies with high cross-reactivity towards technical 4-nonylphenol and a monoclonal antibody very specific to 4-n-nonylphenol. 9-(p-Hydroxyphenyl)nonanoic acid was immobilized onto surface of a sensor chip. The best assay sensitivity was achieved using a flow rate of 50 microl min(-1) and injection time of 2 min. For the assay incorporating monoclonal antibodies a limit of detection 2 ng ml(-1) for 4-n-nonylphenol was achieved. With polyclonal antibodies one order lower sensitivity was observed for 4-nonylphenols. High background level of calibration curve for technical 4-nonylphenol was decreased by using IgG fraction of polyclonal antibodies in combination with lower amount of immobilised 9-(p-hydroxyphenyl)nonanoic acid. Sensitivity of the assay was improved by using a chip with a new derivative on a surface-N-aminobutyl [2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylamine] (limit of detection--5 ng ml(-1)). Applicability of the developed assays to ecological monitoring was checked in experiments using shellfish samples. 4-n-Nonylphenol from spiked samples was extracted into hexane followed by clean-up on NH2 SPE columns. Calibration curves generated for cockles, mussels and oyster samples were identical (limit of detection about 10 ng g(-1)) whereas for scallop samples a slight decrease (about 5-10%) of absolute response was observed. In the assay using the monoclonal antibody specific to 4-n-nonylphenol 31 shellfish samples were found to be negative. Results obtained with polyclonal antibodies indicated that two scallop samples contained a quantity of 4-nonylphenols. The developed biosensor assay could be applied for shellfish analysis as a preliminary screening method. 相似文献

Hatcheries have long been used in an attempt to mitigate for declines in wild stocks of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), though the conservation benefit of hatcheries is a topic of ongoing debate. Irrespective of conservation benefits, a fundamental question is whether hatcheries will be able to function as they have in the past given anticipated future climate conditions. To begin to answer this question, we developed a deterministic modeling framework to evaluate how climate change may affect hatcheries that rear Pacific salmon. The framework considers the physiological tolerances for each species, incorporates a temperature-driven growth model, and uses two metrics commonly monitored by hatchery managers to determine the impacts of changes in water temperature and availability on hatchery rearing conditions. As a case study, we applied the model to the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Winthrop National Fish Hatchery. We projected that hatchery environmental conditions remained within the general physiological tolerances for Chinook salmon in the 2040s (assuming A1B greenhouse gas emissions scenario), but that warmer water temperatures in summer accelerated juvenile salmon growth. Increased growth during summer coincided with periods when water availability should also be lower, thus increasing the likelihood of physiological stress in juvenile salmon. The identification of these climate sensitivities led to a consideration of potential mitigation strategies such as chilling water, altering rations, or modifying rearing cycles. The framework can be refined with new information, but in its present form, it provides a consistent, repeatable method to assess the vulnerability of hatcheries to predicted climate change. 相似文献

Evidence for a three-way trade-off between nitrogen and phosphorus competitive abilities and cell size in phytoplankton 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Trade-offs among functional traits are essential for explaining community structure and species coexistence. While two-way trade-offs have been investigated in many systems, higher-dimensional trade-offs remain largely hypothetical. Here we demonstrate a three-way trade-off between cell size and competitive abilities for nitrogen and phosphorus in marine and freshwater phytoplankton. At a given cell size, competitive abilities for N and P are negatively correlated, but as cell size increases, competitive ability decreases for both nutrients. The relative importance of the two trade-off axes appears to be environment dependent, suggesting different selective pressures: freshwater phytoplankton separate more along the N vs. P competition axis, and marine phytoplankton separate more along the nutrient competition vs. cell size axis. Our results demonstrate the multidimensional nature of key trade-offs among traits and suggest that such trade-offs may drive species interactions and structure ecological communities. 相似文献

Aim. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between various health and fitness measures and Functional Movement Screen? (FMS?) scores among 78 firefighter recruits. Methods. Relationships between FMS? scores and age, body mass index (BMI), sit and reach (S&R) distance, estimated maximal aerobic capacity (V˙O2max), estimated one-repetition maximum squat (1RM-Squatmax), and plank endurance (%Plankmax) were examined. Results. Total FMS? scores were significantly correlated with BMI (r?=??0.231, p?=?0.042), estimated 1RM-Squatmax (r?=?0.302, p?=?0.007), and %Plankmax (r?=?0.320, p?=?0.004). Multiple regression analyses indicated that this combination of predictors significantly predicted (F(3, 74)?=?5.043, p?=?0.003) Total FMS? score outcomes and accounted for 17% of the total variance (R2?=?0.170). In addition, logistic regression analyses indicated that estimated 1RM-Squatmax also significantly predicted (χ2?=?6.662, df?=?1, p?=?0.010) FMS? group membership (≤14 or ≥15). Conclusion. These results suggest that the health and fitness measures of obesity (BMI), bilateral lower extremity strength (estimated 1RM-Squatmax), and core muscular endurance (%Plankmax) are significantly associated with functional movement patterns among firefighter recruits. Consequently, injury prevention programs implemented among firefighter recruits should target these aspects of health and fitness. 相似文献
